IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-COCKS AND STREET-WASHER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181.846., dated September 5, 1876; application filed August 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HooToN, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stop-Cock and Street-Washer Box, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side elevation in part section. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the upper end of the device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the box that incloses the stop-cock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists of a cast-iron box, which is placed under ground for inelosing the stop-cock, and a tube running upward from the box, inclosing the rod by which the stop-cock is operated. It also consists in a guard attached to the top of said pipe, and also to the top oI the street-washer pipe, and provided with screw-caps, which cover the street-washer pipe and the pipe that incloses the stop-cock rod.
A is a box, of cast-iron or other suitable material, provided with slots a, in opposite sides, to-receive the water-pipe B. These slots are closed by the doors b, which are pivoted at c, and notched to receive the pipcB. C is a tube of suitable length, screwed into the center of the top of the box A, and also screwed into the plate or guard D. E is a socket formed on the upper surface of the plate D, and provided with the screw-cap d. F is a stopcock.
in the box A, the plug of which is provided with an Yelongated stem, e, which runs upward through a hole in the plate D, and is squared to receive a notched disk, f, and the key by which it is turned. The disk f prevents the stop-cock from being turned more than enough to open and close it by engaging with the pin g. The pipe t, for street-Washing, is provided with a nipple, G, formed on the plate D, and provided with a cap, h, and to which the hose is attached for street-Washing.
When the street-washer is not required the pipe i, nipple G, and accompanying devices, may be dispensed with, and the pipe B may run horizontally into the house.
When this improvement is used, heaving by frost is obviated. It is impossible for it to become clogged, as there is no channel by which anything can find its way into the lower parts of the device. It is not easily tampered with, as it is impossible to remove the caps Without the key or wrench.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement ot' the` box A with or v without the doors b, the tube C, socket E, and
cap d, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the box A, tube G, plate D, socket E, cap d, stop-cock F, stem e, pipe i, nipple G, and cap h, as set forth.
