SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,720, dated Januaryb, 1904.
Application filed April 27, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LPETER F. GLAZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana," have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Mantle-Guards for Cocks and Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in guards or mantles to provide means whereby faucets and cocks for water, gas, oil, and the like may be sufficiently inclosed and locked, so as to prevent access by unauthorized persons.
The object of the invention is to obviate the inconvenience and expense of cutting off and capping supply-pipes which are required to be temporarily out of service, and is specially adapted for use by gas and water companies, who are called upon frequently to disconnect premises where the tenancy has changed or where the occupant has failed to pay for the service. The prevailing practice with gas companies is to remove the meterand cap the supply-pipe. The purpose of this invention is to provide means for securing the cut-0E cock against possibility of being tampered with, so that the service can be controlled without removing the meter or changing the connections other than by turning the cock to its on position. Gas is referred to here only by way of illustration, the invention being equally applicable to other fluids and liquids.
The object of the invention is accomplished bythe mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an ele ation taken longitudinally ofthe service pipe of the invention in operative position; Fig. 2, a top plan View; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a stop-cock in perspective with one of the removable sections of a modified form of the invention in operative position; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the remaining orcomplemenrary part of the device shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of a cock with the invention in complete operative position. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 represent a housing modified for use on cocks having handles like water-cocks.

which it is desired to protect against unauthorized manipulation by inclosing it in a locked housing. This housing comprises a two-part longitudinally-divided cylindrical shell.
joints at diametrically opposite sides of the shell have the perforations 11 for the passage of the supply and discharge to and from the cock; The ends of the shell will preferably be contracted, as shown, and one end of part 9 will terminate with the cap 12, which has the under side socket 13. The opposite end hasa half-closure, which is provided with the two parallel cars 14, having the perforations 15 One end of the part has the cap 15, with the outside boss or lug 16. The cap fits inside of cap 12, with the boss 16 entering the socket 13. The opposite end of part 10 has a half-closu re, which is provided with an ear 17, that takes between the ears 14: of the part 9. The ear 17 is perforated, so that when the parts 9 and 10 are assembled they will be secured against separation by i he passage of the link 1870f a padlock 19 through the perforated ears. The cock thus housed is fully protected against changes by any person not in possession of a key to unlock the padlock. The mantle thus formed is easily and quickly placed and removed and obviates the necessity of disconnecting the supplypipe when it is desired to cut off a service.
In practice it is convenient to adapt the same guard or mantle to several sizes of cocks. This is provided for by making the shellof ample dimensions for the largest cock to which it is to be applied and by making the perforations 11 of the largest required diameters. Then to tighten the mantle so it cannot be worked loosely around on the cock and broken or the valve-stein reached and turned through the excess openings a set screw 20 is provided in the lug or boss 16, which is screwed down against the end of the cock-valve, preferably the end opposite that 9 and 10 represent the two parts of this shell, the walls of which in the lines of thewhich is used for turning the valve, thereby forcing the cock firmly against the sides of the openings 11 and closing said openings adjacent to that end of the valve-stem which must be used in its own adjustment. The modification shown in Figs.4, 5, and 6 represents a housing without this set-screw feature.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9 the shells, in addition to the openings for the inlet and outlet pipes, have two openings 22 and 23, placed quartering to each other for the handle 24 of the cock. The drawings illustrate the construction so thoroughly that further description is unnecessary.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is regarded as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isv 1. A housing for the purposes specified in two longitudinally-divided parts, one part having a cap with an under side socket, and a part closure at its opposite end, said part closure having perforated ears, the other part of said housing having a cap to fit against the inner side of the first-mentioned cap, said second cap having a lug to enter the socket of the first cap, the opposite end of said second section having a part closure with a perforated ear, and means when the parts of the housing are assembled, for looking the ears together.
2. In a housing for the purposes specified in two longitudinally-divided parts, a part having a cap with an under side socket and a part closure at its opposite end having perforated cars, a second part of said housing having a cap to fit against the inner side of the first cap, said second cap having a lug to enter the socket of the first cap, said lug having a screw-threaded perforation longitudinally of the honsing,the opposite end of said second part or section of the housing from its capped end having a part closure and a perforated ear, a set-screw in the threaded perforation of the lug of the second cap and a padlock for locking'the perforated ears together when the parts of the housing are assembled.
3. A housing for the purposes specified in two longitudinally separable parts having overlapping and interlocking caps at one end and perforated mating ears at the other ends, said housing having perforations in opposite walls in the lines of the joints between the two parts of the housing, a set-screw in the inner cap adjustable longitudinally of the housing, and means for locking the ears of the housing parts together.
