IMPROVEMENT IN NESTS FOR FOW-LS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,840, dated September 5, 1876; application filed July 25, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern.'
. forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which a perspective view is shown.
A represents a small coop, of any desired dimensions, constructed ofslats,`laths, or other suitable material. In the back part of' this coop is a nest, B, consisting of a small box or basket, suspended from one end of a lever, C, by a cord or wire, a, the other end of said lever being connected by a cord or Wire, b, to a door, D, in front. The lever C is provided with a series of holes, or perforated, as shown, and pivoted above the box A in an adjustable standard, E, which may be adjusted to either of a series of holes in the slat H on top of the box A, and the lever is adjustable in said standard, so that the door D and nest B may be made to very nearly balance; but the door should be a little the heaviest, so that it will descend and leave the door open, and propor tionately raise the nest. In front of the nest B, within the coop, is a small platform, G, as shown.
Now, when the hen or other fowl enters the coop and gets into the'nest, the uestdescends a little, which raises the door, closing the same completely, and thereby keeping out all other hens until the hen in the nest again gets out of the saine on the platform G, which lightens the nest, and the door` D, being the heaviest, descends and opens the coop until the hen again enters on the nest.
The door D Works on a slide or in grooves. On the back part of the box Ais a door, I, for reaching in and gathering the eggs out of the nest B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rIhe combination of the coop A with interior platform G, the adjustable standard E, the adjustable lever C, and the nest B and door D, suspended from opposite ends of said lever, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
