Patented Sept. 5, 1876.
2i all UNITED STATES 'PATENT ()FEIOE.
GEORGE W. MARBLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,792, dated September 5, 1876; application filed January 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MARBLE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Umbrella-Holder, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in umbrella-holders of that class which are secured to the wall of an apartment, or to some stationary object, and provided with means for locking an umbrella placed in a socket, from which it cannot be removed except by a person having a key to the same. The invention consists in the combination of a water-tight socket with a bracket, for removably securing the same to the wall or other stationary object; and, further, in the combination, with the socket, of the means for securing an umbrella in the same, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of the bracket and joint which connects thesocket thereto, the halves of the locking-collar being thrown open. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
, In the drawing, A represents a conical tubular socket, preferably of sheet metal, adapted to receive an umbrella, and to retain any water dripping from it. B is a bracket, to be securedto the wall, and is cast with a projection at the top, to which are pivoted two halves of aflanged collar, 0, one of which is provided with a look, a, and the other with a hasp, a, by means of which and a suitable key they may be looked around the handle or staff of an umbrella introduced between them. Behind the socket is secured a projecting frame, 12, having a lateral pin, 0, which enters a hole in aprojection, b, from the face of the bracket. Lateral movement of the tube is prevented by hooks d d, cast on one side of the frame I), which hooks embrace the top and bottom of the projection b, the latter being of such shape that the tube can be engaged with it only when the top is thrown back behind or back of the collar O above, and, consequently, can be disengaged only in that position. It will then be seen that the socket cannot be detached when there is an umbrella in it; but, when empty, or, rather, not in use, it can be removed to empty any Water deposited in it.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. The water-tight socket or holder for an umbrella, in combination with a bracket for detachably securing the same to the wall or other stationary object, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the tube, the bracket, and the collar, adapted to secure an umbrella in the tube, substantially as described.
GEORGE W. MARBLE.
