In said drawings the improved door is indicated at A an d the usual front and rear door posts defining a door opening of a box car are indicated at l() and 11 respectively, said door posts being preferably of Z-form presenting outer flanges of extended width disposed in a plane parallel to the car door and adjacent thereto when said car door is in operative position over the door opening.
A wooden filler block 12 is associated with each Z bar post to which the usual wooden sheathing 13 of the car is secured. On the rear door post and substantially in alignment with the front face thereof, there is disposed an angularly shaped sealing member 14 adapted to cooperate with the rear edge of the door, and on the front door post there is disposed a sealing member 15 adapted to cooperate with the front verticalmargin of the door'to form a sealing joint. The member 15 preferably consists of-an angularly shaped rolled member having the outstanding flange indicated by dotted lines in Figure 3 deflected inwardly towards the door as indicated at 16 and forming a flared overlapping flange for the door. j v The improved door which is geneially indicated by the reference character A includes a marginal rectangular frame which includes a top horizontally extending member 17 and front and rear marginal niembers, as indicated at 18 and 19respectively, the said marginal members 17, 18and 19 being preferably formed of Z-shaped rolled sections with flanges 20, 21 and 22 of the respective marginal members disposed substantially in the outer plane of the door and 'the intermediate webs thereof projecting inwardly of the outer plane and substantially at right angles to the main plane of the door and defining substantially the depth of the door. The respective marginal ineinbers 18 and 19 are connected to the top meinber17 by gussets 23--23 and the corners of the door are welded for the purpose of attaining weatherproof joints.
The body of the door'A intermediate the said framing members 17, 18 and 19 is preferably formed of upper and lower metallic panels as indicated at 24 and 25 respectively and said panels are preferably united to each other along a horizontal line by rivets as indicated at 26. The panel 24 is disposed in the upper portion of the door and is secured at its edges flatwise `to the inwardly projecting flanges 20, 21 and 22 of the respective marginal members 17, 18 and 19. Y
The lower panel 25 of the door is rigidified at its lower margin by bending the lower portion of said panel inwardly as indicated at 27 and thereafter downwardly as indicated at 28, thereby presenting a Z- shaped lower margin with the depending flange 28 disposed in substantially the inner plane of the door. Said panel 25 is preferably formed of metal relatively thicker than the upper panel 24, which serves to maintain the frame against racking and warping and forms a lower margin of great strength, and protects the lower portion of the door against injury, due to shifting loads in the car. The edges of the lower panel are secured flatwise to the inwardly projecting flanges 21 and 22 of the respect-ive vertical margins 18 and 19. Secured to the said depending flange 28 of the lower panel on the inner side of the door is la flat facing plate 29 which extends above the lower margin of the door for an appreciable distance and provides a smooth and even surface for contacting with the car structure as the door is moved across the door opening. j
On the inner side of the door and between the plate 29 and the inner face of the panel 25 are diagonally extending metallic members -80- Said members are preferably of lai-'shape with connecting ilanges 180130 and each extends across the plane of the respective upper and lower panels diagonally from the lower margin o t the door to the respective vertical marg s, said flanges 13G-130 being united to the respective panels by rivets 31. The said braces are thus so disposed as to extend to the lower margin of the door and the vertical margins intermediate the ends thereof and cooperate to resist bending of the door on vertical lines and also counteract racking and warping tendencies of the door, The braces are also united to the face plate 29 by rivets Intermediate the face plate 29 and inner face of the panel 25 there are disposed wooden fillers 33 and 34 which operate to effectively space the face plate, strengthen the lower margin of the door and prevent the entry of moisture or other undesirable matter between the face plate and panel of the door.
The upper rpanel 24 is rigidified intermediate the diagonal bracing and upper and side marginal reinforcement members by having embossed therein an integral einbossment defining a r ilroad monogram. Said monogram, in the present embodiment, includes a rectangularly shaped embossinent having the outline 86 disposed at an angle with reference to the vertical and horizontal margins of the door and within the confines of said outline the plate is rigidied by embossed lettering 37, which is indicative of the nameof a railroad system.

Adjacent Vits central portion the main embossment includes an outwardly extending body portion 312 which extends substantially from side to side of the door thereof. j At the lower margin of the upper panel there is formed a horizontally extending corrugation 315 which extends across the plane of the diagonal members.
j In the modification shown in Figures 9 and 10, the numeral 400 indicates the upper horizontal margin, 401 and 402 the front and rear vertical margins respectively, 403 the upper panel, 404 the lower; panel, 405--405 the diagonal braces, 406 the inner face plate, 407 and 408 filler blocks and 409 corner gussets.` ,The lower panel is rigidified by two horizontally extending embossments 410 and in the upper panel there is a central embossment 411 which is formed of substantially circular outline tangent to the horizontal and vertical margins and also to the diagonal braces. Surrounding said central embossment there is a continuous embossment 412 which includes horizontally extending portions 413-413 and vertically extending portions 414-414, said horizontal and verf tical portions extending across the planes of the diagonal members in horizontal and vertical directions respectively In the modification shown in Figures 11 and 12, 500 indicates the upper horizontal margin, 501 and 502 the front and rear vertical margins respectively, l503 the upper panel, 504 the lower panel, 505-505 the diagonal braces, 506 the inner fac-e plate, 507
vand 508v filler blocks and 509 the corner gussets. The lower panel is rigidified by two horizontally extending embossments 510 and in the upperpanel there is a central rigidifying embossment of substantially rectangular shape 511 extending substantially from side to side of the door and intermediate the said outline the panel is rigidilied by embossed lettering 512, said outline 511 and associated lettering 512 defining a railroad monogram. Above and below the said symbol there are rigidifying meaningless embossments 513-513 of curved shape, said last named bein@ united with the intelligence conveying symbol by depressed portions 514 which serve to give continuity of reinforcement and yet maintain the appearance of a break between said intelligence-conveying embossment and the meaningless emboss ment. Y
Above the monogram and associated with the upper circular portion, there is disposed a supplemental embossment 515 extending horizontally from side to side of the door and formed, adjacent its ends, with downwardly extending vertical portions 516-516 which extend into the piane of the central embossment as deiined by sections 511, 512 and 513. Adjacent the lower margin of said upper panel there is a horizontally extending corrugation 517 which extends above the plane of the diagonal braces.
` Y'Vhile I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner g and thence downwardly to present a depending flange in the inner plane of the door thereby forming a Z-shaped lower margin for the door; a facing plate secured to said depending flange on the inner plane of the door; diagonally extending metallic" members extending from said lower margin to the said vertical margins, said members being of approximately the same depth as the frame and disposed intermediate the planes of said facing plate and secured to said facing plate and ,body plate; and einbossments in the body of the plate intersecting said diagonal members and extending into the corner portions of said body plate and cooperating with said diagonal members to prevent bending of the body plate on various crosslines.
2. In a door of the character described, the combination with a marginal framework having upper and lower horizontal members plate and said body it l. fr
and vertical side members, kall of appreciable depth; of 'metallic covering for said door, extending across said frame in the outer plane thereof, said covering being provided'`v with a series of rigidifying embossments extending across the door and terminatingv short of the vertical members; and independent reinforcing meanson the inner side of the door and confinedrwithin the depth thereof, said reinforcing means lying across the rigidifying embossments and having portions extended beyondthev ends of said embossments and secured to the verticaly marginal members whereby said reinforcing means operate to bridge as beams the intervening space between the ends of the em bossments and the respective vertical v marginal members.

In a car door of the character described, the combination with a marginal framework having upper and lower horizontal members and vertical side members, all of appreciable depth; of metallic covering for said door extendingy across saidrframey inthe outer plane thereof, said covering being provided withkay series of rigidifying embossments disposed outwardly'of the framework and extending across the ,door and terminating short of the vertical members and in-y dependent reinforcing members 'at the inner side of the door and confined within the depth thereof, said reinforcing members intersecting the embossments vand secured to the covering intermediate said embossments, said reinforcing members diverging towards the vertical members and secured thereto whereby said reinforcing members operate to bridge as beams the spacel intermediate theends of the embossments and the vertical members to thereby provideV continuity of' reinforcement between the respective vertical margins of the door.
