END STRUCTURE FOR RAILWAY CARS.

To all whom it may} concern:
Be it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL. a citizen of the United States. residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in End Structures for Railway Cars, of which the following is a full. clear. concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in end structures for railway cars.
It is an object of my invention to construct the walls of railway cars and the like with embossments defining intelligible indicatory symbols in such a manner that the same will function as beams and stiffen the body of the wall on various crosslines.
It is also an object of my invention to provioe suitable framing for a car wall structure whereby supporting beams will provide strength against buckling in certain directions and sheeting embossed by intelligible indicatory characters will provide resistance to buckling in other directions and on various crosslines.
Other object of the invention will more clearly appear from the description hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the end of a railway lOOX car embodying my improved construction. Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on a line corresponding substantially to line 22 of Figure 1. Fig ure 3 is a fractional sectional view showing the corner construction of the car, said section being taken on a plan view and on a line corresponding substantially to the line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is an elevat-ional view of the end of a car showing my improved system of reinforcement effected by a symbol of elongated form and applied to a car having a wall fitted with a small end door. Figure 5 is an end elevational view of a car having three panels with the central panel rigidified by an embossed symbol of partly circular shape and partly of diamond shape. vational view of a construction similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but having the embossment carried out in the form of a shield. Figure 7 is an end elevational View of a car showing a design of embossment based on the keystone design.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, 10-10 indicates the side walls of the car which are preferably made of sheet metal and flanged at the corner of the car as indicated at 11, extending transversely of the car near the top thereof and connecting the side walls is a beam member 12 preferably formed of Z-shape construction, and adjacent the lower portion of the sides is a transverse member 13 which connects the side walls of the car with each other and in this instance consists of an angle member. Intermediate the side walls of the car are two upwardly extending beams 14:14: which are spaced appreciably from each other and extend between and are secured to the respective beams 12 and 13, and said beam 13 intermediate the posts 14 is also reinforced by means of an angle member 15 which eX- tends slightly beyond the posts 14: as indicated on the drawing. In this manner the frame structure as composed of the horizontal beams 12 and 13 and the upward beams let-14 transmits the strain imposed on the end wall to the respective car sides and to the longitudinal center-sill structure, the end of the latter being indicated conventionally on the drawings by the buffer block 16. Said frame structure carries metallic end sheeting A composed in this construction of panels 17 and 18, the lower panel 17 preferably extending from side to side of the car and provided with vertically extending flanges 19-19 at each end thereof, said flange 19 co-operating with flange 11 of the side 10 to form a strong corner member. Intermediate each side wall and the respective vertical beams 14 and also intermediate the respective beams 1414 the plate 17 is formed with a dished portion 19 which forms a beam member for the purpose of resisting buckling of the plate intermediate its vertical and horizontal supporting merobers. The upper panel 18 likewise extends from side to side of the car and has its outer margins flanged in the same manner as panel 17 at 20-20 and is secured adjacent its lower margin to the panel 17 at 21 and adjacent its upper margin to the beam 12. The main body of said panel 18 is reinforced by having embossed therein a descriptive symbol or character designated generally by the reference character B, said symbol is characteristic of a railway trade mark and serves as a perpetual designating mark in addition to providing great strength and rigidity in the wall parts. Said symbol B is formed with a well defined outline 22 which in itself produces a strong rigidifying medium, within said outline other embossments are formed in the plate such as indicated at 23 and 24- respectively. It is particularly desirable in this construction to retain the greater proportion of theplate in one plane in order to render a large area of plate available for securing means between the same and the vertical beams 1 l14, such being effected by rivets 25 within the out-line of the symbol B. The disposition of the embossment in the manner shown reinforces the plate on various crosslines and greatly strengthens the beams 14 against bending in a vertical direction and inasmuch as it is through the said beams that the strains are largely transmitted to the respective horizontal beams 12 and 13 this feature of my improved construction is a highly desirable one. It will also be noted that the symbol B- eXtends beyond the plane of the beams let for a limited distance on each side thereof and to the extent inclicated by the dimension 26 thereby providing overhanging beam portions which greatly reduce the span of flat plate adjacent the side walls of the car. Centrally of the panel as indicated at 27 are characters symbolical of the name of the railroad using the identifying mark. shown on the drawing.
Referring to Figure 4, the construction of the car shown is similar to that described in connection with Figure 1 with the exception that there is incorporated a small door C near the upper portion of the end wall, and the symbol I), disposed below the said door, is indicative of the designating mark of a different railroad system.
Referring to Figure 5 my improved construction is applied to a car end wall having three panels and including a central panel E, upper panel F and lower panel G. Said central panel isreinforced by the designating symbol at H having the outline partly circular as indicated at and partly of diamond shape as indicated at 101. The upper and lower panels F and G are formed with pan-shaped depressions 102 intermediate the vertical beams 103-103 and intermediate each side wall 104 and its adjacent beam 108. Within the outline of the figure, rivets unite beams 103 and the panel E. While I have shown a certain symbol various other symbols may be substituted for that shown and by way of illustration I have illustrated a shield J in Fig. 6 while otherwise maintaining the construction illustrated in Figure 5. In Figure 7, the symbol K illustrated is in the form of a keystone with initials symbolical of those of a railroad system disposed within the outline of the same. In this particular figure the symbol is not disposed quite centrally of the car but slightly to one side thereof, this for the purpose of providing greater area available for riveting the plate and the vertical beams together. The various embodiments of my invention as shown herewith are merely a few illustrative examples of the variations in designs which may be embodied in my improved construction and I contemplate all constructions which come within the spirit and scope of the claims appended hereto. It will be evident to those skilled in the art that each specific de sign of such descriptive trade-mark will require individual arrangement of embossed parts in order to convey the distinctive idea and individuality which the owner of the trade mark or designating symbol desires to impress on the mind 'of the public and I contemplate the embossment of the individual trade mark of any of the owners or users of car equipment on a wall panel and the application of same 100 in accordance with the principles stated herein.
What I claim is:
1. In a car end wall having an upwardly extending beam, an end panel having an 105 intelligence conveying character embossed therein, said character having a portion thereof intersecting the beam to reinforce the panel crosswise of the beam.
2. In a car end wall, the combination with an end panel; of an upwardly extending beam disposed inwardly of the panel, said panel having an intelligible indicatory character embossed therein and providing rigidifying means for the panel crosswise of the beam.
3. In a car end wall, the combination with the side walls of the car; of sheeting incorporated in the end wall, said sheeting having an int ellig ible indicatory character embossed from tlie main body of the sheeting and forming rigidifving means for the plate; and an upwardly extending beam disposed mediatelv of the sides of the car and secured to the sheeting on the inner side of the car wall. said beam and the embossed portion of the character co-operating to form stiffening means for the sheeting.
4. In a car end wall, the combination with vertical members including corner members and a series of upwardly extending beams spaced from each other and from the said corner members of the car; of end sheeting secured to said beam, said sheeting having a rigidifying embossment formed to present an intelligence conveying symbol and formed to resist bending of the sheeting intermediate the upwardly extending beams.
5. In a car end wall, the combination with upwardly extending beams; of sheeting forming a portion of the end wall of the car, said sheeting having an intelligible indicatory character embossed out of the main body of the plate and adapted to resist bending of the plate on various crosslines, said embossment having portions of the margins thereof extended beyond the beams; and riveted connection, contained within the embossment for the purpose of uniting the upward beams and sheeting.
6. In a car end structure the combination with framing including an upwardly extending beam; of sheeting included in the car end wall, said sheeting having a rigidifying embossment formed to present an intel ligible indicatory character and formed to resist bending of the sheeting on various crosslines, the outline of said embossment being formed to present a continuous embossment, said sheeting having securing means with the upward beam within the outline of said embossment.

9. In a car end wall, the combination with sectional end sheeting; of an upwardly extending beam effecting continuity of reinforcement between the respective sections, one of the said sections having a rigidifying embossment formed to present an ntelligible indicatory character and adapter to resist bending of the sheeting on various crosslines.
10. In a car end wall, the combination with the side walls of the car; of end sheeting formed in sections; an upwardly extending beam disposed intermediately of the side walls, said beam eifecting continuity of reinforcement between the respective sections; one of said sections being dished to bridge the distance as a beam between the upwardly extending beam and the side of the car and another of said sections having a rigidifying embossment formed to present an intelligibile indicatory character and adapted to resist bending of the section on various crosslines.
11. In a car end wall, the combination with the side walls of the car; of beams extending crosswise of the car and connecting the sides of the car, said beams being spaced apart vertically; a beam extending upwardly between the crosswise beams and disposed intermediately the sides; and end wall sheeting secured to said upwardly extending beam, said sheeting having an em bossment formed therein defining an ip; telligible indicatory character, said character extending across the plane of the beam to rigidify the sheeting crosswise of the upwardly extending beam.

In a car end wall, the combination with side walls of the car; of beams extending crosswise of the car and connecting the sides thereof; said beams being spaced apart vertically; a plurality of spaced beams disposed intermediately the sides of the car and extending upwardly and secured to the crosswise beams; and end wall sheeting secured to said upwardly extending beams, said sheeting having an embossment formed therein defining an intelligibleindicatory symbol, said symbol being adapted to form a rigidifying means for the plate intermediate the upward beams.
13. In a car end wall having an upwardly extending beam, an end panel having an intelligible indicatory symbol embossed therein, said character being disposed intermediately of the ends of the beam and having portions thereof intersecting the said beam to reinforce the panel crosswise of the beam.
14. An end wall for freight cars defined by substantially vertically extending margins and upper and lower horizontally extending margins and there secured to the car body, said wall including :an upwardly extending post extending between the respective horizontally extending margins and having the ends thereof suitably secured to the body adjacent the said margins; and In Witness that I claim the foregoing I metallic sheeting secured to the said post, have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th said metallic sheeting having incorporated day of August, 1924.
