My present invention has reference to mechanical toys, and my primary object is the provision of a toy which will be attractive as a plaything for children.
- A further object is the provision of a motor driven toy wherein two figures representing men operate a cross cut saw, the said saw being directed through a kerf or slot in a substantially cylindrical element repre- 0 senting a log and wherein the movement of the figures is life-like as the saw is reciprocated by mechanism operated by the motor, together with brake means for halting or permitting the operation of the motor.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended. claim.

As disclosed by the drawings the base 1 of the improved toy is of a substantially rectangular formation is hollow and may be constructed of any desired material. Fixed in the base 1 there is the frame of a motor.
The motor 2 disclosed by the drawings is in the nature of a clockwork and a winding key 3 therefor'projects through an opening in the removable side plate 4 of the base. The base has fixed therein an upstanding block 11, and on the top of this block there is pivoted a bar 12 that has a reduced handle extension 13 that passes through a somewhat elongated slot in the removable side of the base. The bar 12 is in the nature of a brake member and when swung against the rocker arm 9 will prevent the turning the reciprocation of the link 7.
The rocker arm passes through elongated slots in the top of the base and is received in a hollow substantially cylindrical member 14 that represents a log. The member 14 from its top is provided with a slot 15, and in this slot there is arranged for reciprocation a saw blade 16. The saw blade is pivoted, as at 17, to the upper or outer end of the rocker arm 9. The ends of the saw have upstanding portions 18, respectively, which are pivoted or otherwise loosely connected to flexible elements 19 that represent the arms and hands of two oppositely facing figures 20, respectively. Each of the figures is of a similar construction and each includes a lower ,or leg portion 21 that is fixed to the top of the base and an upper or body portion 22 that is pivotally mounted on the lower portion 21. The lower portion 21 has its flat outer end formed with an annular projection 22 that is received in an annular recess in the lower and flat end of the body portion 22. From the center of the rounded extension 22 there arises a pivot 23. The pivot may be in the nature of an ordinary nail as disclosed by the v drawings and the said pivot is received in a socket 24 in the body 22.
The body portions of the figures are, of course, formed with heads and are made as natural as possible to represent sawyers. In operation the motor, after being wound will turn the wheel 5 and impart a reciprocatory movement to the link 7 causing the latter to rock the arm 9 and thereby impart a reciprocatory movement in a longitudinal direction to the saw blade 16. The offset ends 18 of the blade being attached to the yieldable or resilient arm members 19 will during the movement of the saw cause the body portions 22 of the said figures to con tinuously turn in alternating directions for approximately one-half of a revolution. The brake 12 can be operated to regulate the speed at which the saw is reciproc'ated and likewise brought against the rocker arm 9 to prevent the operation thereof by the motor. Obviously different types of motor from that disclosed by the drawings may be employed.
The toy it will be noted is of a simple construction, is light in Weight and will afford amusement to the operator thereof.
Having described the invention I claim:
A toy which includes a hollow base, a pair of spaced figures representing men on the base, each of said figures comprising an upper body section and a lower ieg section and the leg sections being fixed to the base and having fiat upper ends provided with annular projections and pivot elements e tending centrally from the projections, the body portions having their lower ends flat to rest on the leg portions and having annular depressions to receive the annular projections of the legs therein and likewise having bores to receive the pivots therein, angle flexible elements pivoted to the shoul ders of the body portions of the figures, depending elements secured to the ends of the said flexible memliicrs, a blade having its ends fixed to the depending elements a slotted guide on the base for the blade, in combination with means for imparting a reciprocatory movement to the blade to cause the body portions of the figures to alternately turn on the leg portions thereof.
