UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. TAYLOR, OF WESTFIELD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT m BE'D-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 181,605, dated August 29, 1876; application filed June 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. TAYLOR, of Westfield, Chautauqua county, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of a bed-bottom, combining the peculiar qualities of both the elliptic and spiral springs with the sacking or canvas bottom in such a manner that the canvas can be easily stretched up and kept at the proper tension, the sagging or stretching of the sacking being obviated, and the whole arranged in a simple, durable, and cheap form of construction.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of bed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of bed. Fig. 3 is a side view of stretching-roller. Fig. 4 is a view ofinner side of hook-bracket or pillar block, showing the arrangements of the ratchet, pawl, and spring. Fig. 5 is a view of the spanner or wrench. Fig. 6 is an end view of the bracket or bearing-block of the side frames.
The bed consists of the side frames A A:
and A A, of wood or other suitable material, and of such dimensions as to give the requisite amount of elasticity. They are secured in pairs by means of one or more bearing-blocks,
B B, and bolts or screws. The blocks B B are grooved or flanged, so as to keep the bars A and A parallel. The bars A and A are separated near their ends by the spiral springs O G 0, increasing the elasticity of the whole. The bars A A are secured at one end to the tension-bar D, upon which one end of the can- 'vas is secured by means of tacks or other fastening. At the other end of A A are placed the hooked brackets or pillar-blocks E E,which carry the journals, and ratchet-pa wls with their springs of the tensionroller F. At a convenient distance from E E the bars A A are connected by a fixed cross-bar or girt, G.- The bars A! A have at their ends, eyes, or hooks I I, by means of which the bed may be suspended by cords, rods, or hooks from above, when it is not convenient to use the ordinary bedstead, or to allow for the motion of a vessel or car. Where the bed may be suspended from the deck or roof, or when camping out, it may be suspended from the tent-poles, or from a tree, making in all cases a comfortable and convenient bed.
The tension-roller or Windlass F is made of greater circumference in the middle than at the ends, thereby stretching the canvas faster in the middle than at the sides, and counteracting the tendenc it has to sag or bag in the middle.
Thetension-bar D may be made of the same swelled form, it'desirable, and the joints whereby it is secured to the frame A A may be made adjustable, so that it may be placed in an angular position (shown by the dotted line D) to counteract any inequality of stretch in two sides of the canvas H.
The canvas H, which may be made of any strong flexible Web, as burlap, netting, or wire cloth, being wound around or secured at one end to D by tacking, sewing, or other means, is similarly secured at the other end to F, by the revolution of which it is wound up between the guide-flanges F F and held by the ratchcts F F As the canvas stretches and sags with use it is only necessary to apply the spanner K to one of the ratchets F F and turn until the desired tension is attained, without disturbing the bedding, or, in the case of an invalid, without awakening the sleeper.
The roller or windlas F, with the hooked brackets E and ratchets F and girt G, may be used at both ends of the frame A A, it desired.
I claim- The combination of the guide-flange F hooked bracket E, and-adjustable tension-bar D with the springbars A A, auxiliary springs O, bearing-block B, and hooks I, or their equivalents, when constructed and used substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
A DAVID H. TAYLOR. Witnesses:
