accumulator for purposes of addition, or subtraction, through mechanism which is set by the tabulated position of the carriage, tabulation of the carriage being effected either 10 manually or automatically, as may be desired. The selection of the accumulator has also been accomplished by the manual operation of the controlling or operating keys. The patents to Ellis Nos. 1,197,276 and 1,197,278 dated September 5, 1916, and No.
1,203,863 dated November '7, 1916, and the patents to Bernau No. 1,550,945 dated August 25, 1925, and No. 1,731,701, dated October 15, 1929 disclose the foregoing mecha- IllSIllS.
In the Ellis calculating machine, the carriage tabulates from one tabulated position to another so that adding or subtracting operations or merely listings, without addition,
may be performed in different columns of the sheet or form used in the machine, according to the nature of the work being done. As heretofore proposed,the adjustable stops on the carriage'and depressible levers on the frame-Work of the machine have, by their coaction, selected the accumulator which it is desired to use, according to the tabulated position of the carriage.
There are certain kinds of tabulated work, including gas, telephone, and electric light bills, used in certain municipalities or other places which require the printing and accumulation of items in certain columns, whereas in other columns, it is desired only to repeat the printing of the item but without again accumulating it, as cross-tabulation continues, while also necessitating the printing of credit items, all with the adaptability to take, and print, totals fromthe respective accumulators.
My present improvements comprise means for automatically selecting the desired accumulator which should be used for a given column of the form or blank, where the successive items are to be accumulated; means 5, 1928, Serial No. 323,915.
whereby an item may be repeated, with accumulation in another column or columns and means permitting a subtracting operation to be carried on when desired during the crosstabulation work, the operation of the afore- 5 said means being effected automatically, in the desired sequence according to the number of operations of the machine, that is, according to the number of times the machine is put through its complete cycle of operaac tions, as-contradistinguished from the means set forth in the aforesaid patents wherein the selection of the accumulator is brought about by the action of stops on the carriage which co-operate with the accumulator con- 05 trolling lever mechanism.
Whereas the travelling carriage and arresting stop mechanism effect the positioning of the sheet of paper or form carried by the platen of the carriage so that the desired printing operation will occur at the proper point on the sheet, nevertheless the mechanism of the present invention radically differs from that of the aforesaid patents in that the desired accumulator is automatical- 1y selected so that it will receive the item set up on the keyboard, or the item is merely repeated, without accumulation, according to the given numerical standing or order of the particular operation in respect to those which have preceded it; hence, in the present mechanism the selection or omission of an accumulator depends on whether the given operation is the first, third, fifth, eighth, etc. complete operation of the machine. When the present automatic accumulator selecting mechanism is employed, the mechanism heretofore used in the Ellis machine for the control of the accumulators by stops on the carriage, and levers and hanging bars on the machine for controlling the accumulator latches or levers shown, for example, in Fig. 56 of the Ellis Patent No. 1,197,276 may, or may not, be omitted. The selection of the accumulator is entirely automatic in conjunc- 95 tion with the cross-tabulated position of the carriage as, for instance, the No. 1, No. 2, No, 3, No. 4:, position, except that a repeat lever is employed which is adapted to be depressed by settable stops on the carriage representing those columnar or tabulated positions corresponding to positions or points on the sheet or form where the previously printed item is only intended to be repeated, said lever cooperating with the slide bar latch to prevent unlocking of the numeral keys, just as would be the case were the repeat key used.

If the subtracting key be depressed, and an overdraft occurs, the total key will be locked.
Reference is to be had to my application, Serial No. 323,124, filed December 1, 1928, wherein T have set forth a quadruplex accumulator calculating machine having a separate total key for each accumulator and a single sub-total key. together with novel mechanism, whereby a total may be taken from any selected accumulator by the use of its total key and followed by an operation of the machine. whereas a sub-total may be taken from any accumulator by the conjoint use of the single sub-total key and the total key controlling a given accumulator.
1n the present mechanism, a similar arrangement of keys may be employed. When a sub-total is to be taken in connection with the mechanism of the present selector, the single sub-total key and the total key for the glven accumulator will be depressed and this action wili result in the restoration of the automatic accumulator selector to normal pos1t1on, if it is the total key for the No. 1 accumulator that has been depressed, so that a pesumption of automatic selection may folow.
If the present mechanism be used in connection with the controlling keys of my aforesa1d application, the mechanism whereby the accumulators are controlled for addition by the tabulated position of the carriage, exceptlng that for the No. 1 accumulator, must be dispensed with in order that the accumulators be automatically selected but the aforesaid machine and the present improvements are t adapted for conjoint use.
Tn the accompanying drawings, only so much of the controlling keyboard and the mechanism of the Ellis machine is shown as Wlll afford a clear understanding of the construction and operation of the present automatic accumulator selector in connection therewith and reference should be had to the foregoing patents and application for particulars in respect to these other mechanisms.

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation at the left side of the machine showing only the present mechanism, certain parts of the Ellis machine, and the keys, the selector being in normal position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, the selector frame being omitted, the selector being in the osition assumed at the end of the seventh "orward stroke and the left operating arm of the machine in the position it assumes at the end of the forward stroke for the purpose of turning the selector disc a distance of one tooth;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. i is a perspective view of the means for operating the repeat mechanism from a stop on the carriage;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the operating or controlling keys; and
Fig. 6 is an example of the work which may be performed with an Ellis machine equipped with the present improvements, the items being numbered to represent the corresponding consecutive cross-tabulated positions of the carriage as said items are produced by the consecutive operations of the machine.
The main or operating shaft is shown at 4.01. One of the operating arms of the Ellis machine which is secured to, and rocks with, the main shaft 4.01, appears at 4.501). The normal position of this operating arm is that shown in Fig. 1. The turning of the shaft $01 during the forward stroke of the operating handle or electric motor drive brings the arm 4501]] to the position shown in Fig. 2, which operation efifects the automatic selection of the desired accumulator by operating the mechanism hereinafter described.
/Vhile the present improvements are not limited to use in connection with the operating or controlling keys shown in Fig. 5, illustration thereof is given to show how the present improvements may he used in connection with the quadrupl'ex accumulator calculating machine disclosed in my application Serial No. 323,124 filed December 1, 1928. Reference is to be had to the Ellis Patents Nos. 1,197,276 and 1,197,278 and No. 1,203,863 for a disclosure of the controlling keys which may be used in connection with the present invention, instead of the keys shown in Fig. 5.
Referring to Fig. 5, the keys shown correspond to those disclosed in my application for quadruplex accumulator calculating machine. The key Kol is the error key; the repeat key is shown at 4X62. The total keys for the four accumulators appear, respectively at 1X63, l-Kh t, 4X65, and 41(66. @f these keys, the No. 1 accumulator total key 4X63 is more fully shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 together with its connections whereby, on its depression, the accumulator selector disc will be released so that it will automatically return to normal position. The subtraction key appears at 1 161157. The subtotal key which is shown at LKGS, is conjointly used with any one of the total keys @1563, 4X64,
30.82 connected to arm 30.50 and which has.
a laterally extending lip, best seen in Fig. 3, with which the operating arm 450D is adapted to engage on the forward stroke of the shaft 4.01, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the purpose being to actuate the feed 'arm 30.51 to cause the feed pawl 30.52 to engage one of the ratchet teeth R of the selector disc 30.56 for the purpose of turning said disc a distance equal to one tooth.
The selector disc 30.56 is adapted to be returned to normal position by a spring 30.83
which is connected to said disc and to the frame 4B47B.
A spring 30.81 connected to the arm 30.50 and to the feed pawl 30.52, tends to draw the feed pawl into engagement with the teeth R on the disc 30.56.
A combined retaining and releasing pawl 30.53 which is pivotally connected .at 30.11
to a. link 30.54, is pivotally carried by the lower end of the arm 30.50. This pawl 30.53 has a pin 30.13 which is adapted to engage any one of a series of retaining teeth T on the disc 30.56, when the disc is in its different positions. A spring which connects the arm 30.50 to the pawl 30.53, draws the pawl toward the disc 30.56 and causes the pin 30.13 to engage the retaining teeth T.
A cam arm 30.55 pivoted to the frame of the machine at 30.12, is pivoted to the link 30.54 at 30.11.
A- pin 30.10 on the stem of the total key 4K63 for the No. 1 accumulator, is adapted to engage the cam on the arm 30.55 or to be placed in the path of said cam so that if the total key 4K63 be depressed to take a total from the accumulator No. 1, the pawl 30.53 will be shifted to withdraw the pin 30.13 from the retaining teeth of the ratchet selector disc 30.56, thereby enabling the spring 30.83 to restore the disc 30.56 to normal position. Hence, when a total is taken in No. 1
of the series of teeth R. The point B islocated in advance of the first tooth of the series B. The tooth A is located beyond I the last tooth of the series of retaining teeth T of the ratchet wheel 30.56.
The tail end of the feed pawl 30.52 has a notch adapted to receive the pointed end of the retaining pawl 30.53 when the parts are in the normal position shown in Fig. 1. This co-operation effects normal disconnection of the feeding point of the pawl from the teeth R.
The controlling pin latches 41360 and 4D61 which are pivoted on the studs 13.1213 that are carried by the frame 4134713, are of the same general construction as shown in the Ellis patents and perform the same general function. These latches are connected by a bowed spring 30.80 which tends to maintain them in the position shown in Fig. 1. The pins D2? which are carried by the latches 4D60, 41361 are adapted to be engaged by the points A, B, as hereafter explained. When such engagement occurs, the given latch will be disengaged from the spring actuated accumulator controlling lever 41358, pivoted on stud D1813 carried by the frame 4B47B, said levers having the pins D21 and 41322. Thus, according to which of the points A, B is in engagement with the pin D27 of the given latch 4D60,
41361, the selected accumulator may be conditioned for the performance of addition.
Reference is to be had to the Ellis patents and to my aforesaid application for a disclosure of themechanism by which the levers 4D58 control the respective accumulators.
When the present improvements are used, the automatic control of the respective accumulators by stops carried by travelling carriage coacting with levers and hanging bars for the control of the latches 41360, 41361 may be dispensed with, as the purpose of the present invention is to provide mechanism which will automatically select the accumulator according to the number of operations of the machine, as previouslyexplained.
However, as the present invention contemplates the repetition of an item, the mechanism shown in Fig. 4 is provided.
A horizontally arranged lever F61 is provided with anupstanding point F616 which is adapted to be engaged by an adjustable stop or stops on the carriage, properly arranged or positioned so that repetition of the item in the proper column or at the proper point on the paper or sheet carried by the carriage, will result. A link 30.84 having an elongated slot or loop at its lower end, is attached tothe lever F61 and is adapted to co-operate with a screw carried by the slide bar latch L63 which, in turn, is pivotally mounted at L11 on the slidable bar L51 which has to do with the locking and releasing of the numeral keys of the regular keyboard of the machine.-
In Fig. 4, the latch L63 is shown in its raised position which it will assume when the accumulator, the purpose being to lock the total key to signal the operator that an overdraft has occurred. This mechanlsm, which is not shown, will be clearly understood from the patent to Bernau No. 1,508,267, more particularly to Figs. 1. 2, 8, 9, 11, 12. and 13 there of, and to the patent toBernau. No. 1,731,701.
Fig. 6 represents examples of work performed by an Ellis machine provided with the present improvements. Assuming that (3.25) illustrated at 1, or the first position of the carriage in Fig. 6, has been set up on the numeral keyboard by thedepression of keys in the hundreds, tens, and units banks, and the starting bar of the machine is depressed, a suitable stop on the carriage causes the amount to be printed in the proper column or at the proper point on the paper sheet held by the platen of the carriage and this amount is added into accumulator No. 1. The engagementof a point or projection on a stop on the carriage with the-point F616, de-
presses the left hand end of the lever F61, Fig. 4, and raises the right hand end thereof, elevating the-latchL63 so that, as the machine goes through its cycle of operations, the numeral keys which have been depressed to set up the number 3.25, are not released, the controlling pin latch for the No. 1 accumulator thereby being positioned for addition. The feed pawl 3052 has, during the operation of the machine, turned the selector disc 30.56 a distance of one tooth because the operating arm 450D has, on the forward stroke thereof, engaged the lip of. the feed arm 30.51, thereby engaging the pawl 30.52 with a tooth Tt. Meanwhile, the pin 30.13 of the retaining pawl 30.53, has passed from one of the teeth of the series T to another tooth thereof so that the disc 30.56 Will be held in its new position.
At the end of the foregoing operation, the carriage automatically shifts to its second tabulated position as an incident of the cycle of the machine when the latter operates. following the manual actuation of the starting bar. Reference is to be had to Figs. 8 to let of the drawings and to lines 1 to 17 of page 16 of the Bernau Patent No. 1,731,701 for a disclosure of the automatic tabulating operation of the machine. When in its second tabulated position. the operator touches the starting bar to put the machine through its second operation. By reason of the fact that the lever F61 is holding the latch L63 raised, the item 3.25 is printed in the second selector disc 30.56 to be turned a distance represented by another tooth.
At the end of the operation, the carriage automatically tabulates to its third position and a third operation of the machine occurs. The stop on the carriage holding the latch L63 in repeat position. the selector disc 30.56 is now in position where the point A engages the pin D27 on the pawl 4D60, thereby releasing the said pawl from the upper controlling arm lD58. This action having occurred, the item 3.25 is not only printed in the third column as shown at '3, Fig. 6 but, as the accumulator No. 4 has been set for addition by the releasing of the upper arm 4D58, the amount of the item 3.25 is added into accumulator No. 4. The selector disc 30.56 advances another notch. The carriage then auto matically tabulates to its fourth position.
Tn the fourth position or on the fourth operation of the machine, the latch L63 is released because no stop is provided to depress the point F616 of the lever F61. Consequently, on the fourth operation of the machine when the number 3.25 showh at 4;, Fig. 6, is printed, there is no addition in any accumulator on this operation and the numeral keys are released by the action of the latch L63. The fourth operation of the machine causes the selector disc 30.56 to be turned a distance of another tooth.
The fifth position of the carriage is the same as the first position. When the carriage has been returned to the fifth position, that is, to a position represented at the be ginning of another line of cross tabulation, successive operations 5, 6 7, 8, are a repetition of operations 1, 2, 3, 4, respectively but, of course, a new item is set up on the numeral keyboard when the carriage is in its fifth position and prior to the fifth operation of the machine. If, for example, when the carriage is in its fifth position as represented by 5, Fig. 6, the number 6.75 is set up on the numeral keyboard by depressing the proper keys, this new amount is printed and added into accumulator No. 1 on the fifth operation as shown at 5, and is printed, without accumulation, on the sixth operation, as shown at 6, the selector disc 30.56 being advanced a distance of one of the teeth B for each operation. This turning of the disc brings the point B to a position where it will engage the pin D27 of the pawl 1D61, releasing the lower controlling pin arm 4tD58 so that the pin 4D22 thereof will, on the seventh operation, cause the item 6.75 to be printed as shown at 7 and the amount to be added into accumulator No. 3, and the disc 30.56 advances to its last notch as shown in Fig. 2.

I as shown, it is printed and the amount thereof is added into accumulator No. l, andthe printing of this item is repeated on the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth operations, as previously explained, whereupon the numeral keys representing the item (2.50) are released and the carriage is returned to the first column.
The operations 13, l4, 15, represent sub-totals ot the first accumulator, whereas operation 16 represents a total taken from the same accumulator by the use or the total key 4X63 for that particular accumulator.
llt will be understood that on the depression of the total key 4K63 for a total or subtotal, the retaining pawl 30.53 rocks on its pivot and the pin 30.13 is withdrawn from the tooth T with which it is engaged. 'lhereupon, the spring 30.83 returns the selector disc 30.56 to normal position as shown in Fig. l.
if the item in operation 9 is a credit item, instead of a debit item, the non-add key K69 isdepressed by the operator, which results in disposing the credit symbol so that it will print in connection with the item shown at 9, 10, 11, as represented by the ex ample constituting the lower part of Fig. 6. lln this instance, on operation 12, the operator depresses the subtraction key 4K6? so that the proper item, which, in the example given is 500GB, is subtracted from the amount in accumulator No. 1. Should the credit item on operation 9 be larger than the sum of the items represented l, 5 {which is not the case in the example in the lower part ot Fig. 6), the overdraft mechanism such as provided in the patents to Bernau Nos. 1, 508,26? and l,73l,70l, ill etlec locking of the total key 63 by e agern with the notch. oil the key stem theme that the said total key cannot be depressed .and the operator is thus given a signal that an overdraft exists in the machine. This locked condltion 1s released in the manner set up in the said Bernau patents, whereupon the overdraft total may be transferred to actotal shown at 1 7 is the total of accumulator No. a which is the sum of the items printed on the third operation, whereas the total represented at 18, is the total of accumulator No. 3, which is the sum of the items printed in operation 7".
@bviously, the invention is not limited to the number of teeth R, T hereinbetore described and that more or less of these teeth may be employed according to the requirements of the bill, blank, or business form on which tabulations are to be printed. Furthermore, it is obvious that the projections A, and B, may be located on the disc 30.56 in such fashion that they will perform their functions at other positions of the said disc.
In fact, these projections or operating means may be adjustably mounted on the said disc 30.56 to provide any operation desired. llt will also be obvious that the position and number of the stops on the carriage may be employed according to requirements.
The blank space or dwell G which follows the eighth notch of the series R, prevents any further turning of the disc 30.56,-
regardless of the number of subsequent operations of the machine.
It will be understood that whereas the carriage-controlled levers and hanging bars of the Ellis machine, as disclosed, for example, in the aforesaid patents, are not shown herein, they may be used, as they do not interfere with the use of the present improvements.
Furthermore, whereas the present improvements are shown only as applied to accumulators No. 3 and No. 4:, the principle thereof may also be applied to the remaining accumulators. lit the cam lever 30.55 and its connections are provided with a manually operated hook or retaining piece to retain these parts in the position shown in Fig. l, and the patented hanging bars and carriagecontrolled levers of the Ellis machine are retained, the machine would be capable, by changing the stops on the carriage and operating such hook, 0-2 being conditioned to perform either class of work.
What I claim is:
i. In a calculating machine, the combination with a frame, and a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up, of an accumulator, means whereby the numbers or amounts set up on said keyboard may be entered in said accumulator, accumulator-controllingmeans, operating means adapted to carry on a cycle of operations to cause the aforesaid means to perform their functions, and selecting means mounted on the frame co-operating with said operating means and accumulator-controlling-means and automatically operated by said operating means on successive operations oi the machine by which the accumulator may be automatically selected and utilized for the entry therein of the number or amount set up on the keyboard as determined by the condition of the selecting means at the time the machine is operated.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination with a frame, and a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up, of a plurality of accumulators, means whereby the numbers or amounts set up on said keyboard may be entered in said accumulators, accumulator-controlling-means, operating means adapted to carry on a cycle of operations to cause the aforesaid means to perform their functions, and selecting means mounted on the frame adapted to be successively automatically operated by said operating means on successive operations of the machine by which an automatic selection may be made of an accumulator from the aforesaid plurality of accumulators for the entry in the selected accumulator of the numher or amount set up on the keyboard as determined by the condition of the selecting means at the time is operated.
3. In a calculatin machine, the combination with a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set u of an accumulator, accumulator contro ling means, a traveling carriage, means whereby the numbers 'or amounts set up on said keyboard maybe entered in said accumulator, operating means adapted to carry on a cycle of operations to cause the machine to perform its functions, selecting means co-operating with said operating means and accumulator-controlling-means and automatically operated by said operating means on successive operations of the machine by which the accumulator is automatically selected and utilized for the entry therein of the number or amount set up on the keyboard when the machine is operated, and means controlledby the carriage which governs the numeral keyboard, thereby to determine whether the previously depressed keys representing the amount shall be released during a subsequent operation of the machine.
4. In a calculating machine, the combination with a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up, of a plurality of accumulators, a travelling carriage, means whereby the numbers or amounts set upon said keyboard may be entered in said accumulators, accumulator-controlling-means, operating means adapted to carry on a cycle of operations to cause the machine to perform its functions, selecting means co-operating with said operating means'and accumulator-controlling-means and successively automatically operated by said operating meansby which an automatic selection is made of an accumulator from the aforesaid plurality of accumulators for the entry therein of the number oramount set up on the keyboard when the machine is operated,
and means controlled by the carriage which governs the numeral keyboard, thereby to determine whether the previously depressed keys representing the amount shall be released during a subsequent operation of the machine, said selecting means aforesaid including means which automatically determines the selection of the accumulator in which the aforesaid amount shall be entered.
5. In a calculating machine having a frame, a carriage, a numeral keyboard, operating means, a plurality of accumulators, and accumulator-controlling-means, selecting means co-operating with said operating means on different operations of the machine,said selecting means being mounted on the frame and automatically acting on the accumulator-controlling-means, thereby to select and utilize the accumulator intended for use to accumulate therein the number standing on the keyboard or; a given operation of the machine according to the condition of the selecting means at the time of said' operation.
6. In a calculating machine having a frame, a carriage, a numeral keyboard, operating means, an accumulator, and accumula tor-controlling-means, selecting means cooperating with said operating means on different operations of the machine, said selecting means being mounted on the frame and automatically determining Whether said accumulator shall be automatically utilized to accumulate therein the number standing on the keyboard.
7. In a calculating machine having a numeral keyboard on which numbers of amounts may be set up the combination of means for operating the machine, a travelling carriage, an accumulator, accumulatorcontrolling-means, selecting means operated by said operating means on different operations of the machine which co-operates with said accumulator-controlling-means and determines by its action on said accumulator controlling-means whether said accumulator shall be automatically utilized for the entry of an item, and means controlled by the carriage, according to the position thereof, which determines whether the previously depressed keys representing the amount shall be released during a subsequent operation of the machine.
8. In a calculating machine having a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up the combination of means for operating the machine, a travelling carriage, a plurality of accumulators, accumulator controlling means, means operated by said operating means on different operations of the machine co-operating with said accumulator-controllingmeans for automatically selecting and utilizing that one of the aforesaid accumulators intended for use on a given operation of selecting I the machine, and means controlled by the carriage, according to the position of the latter, which determines whether the previously depressed keys representing the amount shall be released during a subsequent operation of the machine.
9. In a calculating machine having a frame, a carriage, a numeral keyboard, operating means, and a plurality of accumulators, a selector mounted on the frame adapted to be shifted in step-by-step fashion by the aforesaid operating means on successive operations of the machine by which an accumulator intended for use on a given operation of the machine is automatically selected for utilization to accumulate the number standing on the keyboard.
10. In a calculating machine having operating means, and a plurality of accumulators, a selector adapted to be shifted in stepby-step fashion by the aforesaid operating means on successive operations of the machine by which an accumulator intended for use on a given ope-ration of the machine is automatically selected for utilization. a key, mechanism controlled by said key through which the amount standing on the accumulator may be obtained when the key is oper ated, and means operated by said key for effecting restoration of the said selector to normal position.
11. In a calculating machine having a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up, the combination of means for operating the machine, a plurality of accumulators,
accumulator-controllingmeans, a selector shifted in step-loy-stcp fashion by the aforesaid operating means on successive operations of the machine, said selector co-operating with the accumulatorcontrolling-means by which an accumulator intended for use on a given operation of the machine is automatically selected for utilization by the operation of the machine, a travelling carriage, and means controlled by the carriage, according to the position thereof, which determines by its co-operation with the operating means aforesaid, whether the previously depressedskeysc representing the amount shall be releawd on an operation of the machine succeeding that during which the item has been accumulated in a. selected aocumulator.
12. In a calculating machine, the combination of means for operating the machine, a plurality of accumulators, accumulator-controlling-means, a toothed accumulator selector adapted to be operated in step-by-step fashion, pawl mechanism operable by the operating means aforesaid whereby the teeth of the selector are engaged, in succession, on successive operations of said operating means to shift the selector in step-by-step fashion, said selector cooperating with the accumulator-controlling-means to efiect automatic selection of an accumulator, according to the position of the selector, whereby the selected accumulator may be utilized on an operation of the machine by said operating means.
13. In a calculating machine, the combicording to the position of the selector, wherei by the selected accumulator may be utilized on an operation of the machine, and a key whereby the selector may be returned to normal position at the will of the operator.
14. In a calculating machine, the combination of means for operating the machine, a plurality of accumulators, accumulator-controlling-means, a toothed accumulator selector adapted to be operated in step-by-step fashion, pawl mechanism operable by the operating means aforesaid whereby the teeth of the selector are engaged, in succession, on successive operations of said operating means toshift the selector in step-by-step fashion, said selector co-operating with the accumulatorcontrolling-means to efiect automatic selection of an accumulator, according to the position of the selector, whereby the selected accumulator may be utilized on an operation of the machine, a key and associated mechanism whereby, on the operation of said key, the amount'standing on the accumulator may be obtained, and means operated by said key which serves the two-fold purpose of normally holding the selector where positioned, and, on the operation of the key, to release the pawl aforesaid so that the selector will be restored to normal position.
15. In a calculating machine having a numeral keyboard on which numbers or amounts may be set up, the combination of means for operating the machine, a plurality of accumulators, accumulator-controllingmeans, selecting means co-operating with said operating means on difierent operations of the machine and automatically acting on the accumulator-controlling-means, thereby to select and utilize the accumulator desired for use on a given operation of the machine, a travelling carriage, and means operated by the aforesaid means for operating the machine which causes said carriage to assume difierent tabulated positions on successive operations of the aforesaid operating means corresponding to the difl'erent operations of said selecting means.
16. In a calculating machine having a ltd) e retreats numeral keyboard on which ulcers or amounts may be set up,the combination of means for operating the machine, a plurality of accumulators, accumulator-controlling means, selecting means co-operating with said operating means on different operations of the machine and automatically acting on the accumulat-or-controlling-means, thereby to select and utilize the accumulator desired for use on a given operation of the machine a travelling carriage, means operated by t e "aforesaid means for operating the machine which causes said carriage to assume different tabulated positions on successive operations of the aforesaid operating means corresponding to the different operations of said selecting means, and means operated by the carriage when the latter is in certain of said tabulated positions causing the previously depressed keys to be held in their depressed position thereby to cause repeating in a selected accumulator of a number or amount previously set up and accumulated.
