Patented July 14, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM E. SPEREY, or LA MESA, CALIFORNIA TOY Application filed June c, 1930. Serial 110,459,560.
This invention relates to childrens toys of the figured type, the primary objectof the invention being to provide a combined toy and exercising device, so that a child seated g; thereon may propel the device by pushing forwardly with his feet while they are contacting with the ground surface.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character wherein the body portion is supplied with a head simulating the head of a horse, the body portion being yieldably mounted so that it may swing vertically under the weight of the child seated thereon.
A still'further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a substantially wide foot rest directly under the body portion, so that the child may move upwardly and downwardly while in a seated position, exercising the limbs and feet.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details-of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the .invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device comprises a frame embodying a rear section 5 that includes rearwardly extended members 6 that have bearings at their free ends to receive the axle 7 on which the wheels 8 are mounted. Extending forwardly from the rear section 5 and disposed at a point in termediate the sides thereof, is a pipe section 8 that has connection with the pipe section 9, by means of the elbow 10.
The pipe 9 has connection with the union 11, which is formed with a vertical opening to accommodate the rod 12 that is provided with a fork 13 at its lower end, in which the wheel 14: is mounted, the rod 12 extending an piece 17 is formed. withan opening to rei ceive the forward end of the spring 18, which is substantially long and extends rearwardly to a position over the rear wheels 8. Supported on the pipe 16 is anadjusting rod 19 that is adjustably supported within the socket member 20, so that the upper end thereof contacts with the under surface of the spring 18 to tension the spring 18 and adapt the device for use by children of various weights. v. i
The rod 12 extends through an opening formed in the spring 18, with the result that the spring 18 may move independently of the rod, to accomplish the purpose of the invention. Secured tothe spring 18 is a board 21 that provides the seat of the toy, the board being substantially wide and provided with leg openings 22, through which the legs of the child seated on the device, are extended so that his feet may contact with the ground 8 surface to propel the device.
The reference character 22 designates a board that is provided with hooks 23 at its rear end, to be hooked over the axle 7 the forward end of the board extending to a posii tion adjacent to the front wheel 14:, where it rests on the pipe 9, providing a foot rest or stand for the child using the device.
Pivoted links 24 have connection with the side edges of the board 22, and have pivotal connection with the links 25, at 26 which in turn'are pivotally connected to the seat 21, at 26. Brackets 25 are secured to the sides of the seat and provide rests for the links 25 when the board 22 is used as a foot rest. Due to this construction, a child may place his feet on the board 22 and by raising and lowering his body, cause the board 21 to swing in a vertical plane, resulting in exercising the muscles of the feet and legs of the child.
By moving the board 22 to a position as shown by dotted lines in Figure 1, the board may be used as a tray or table. In order to protect the child against falling from the device, a guard 27 is provided, the guard being extended an appreciable distance above the seat or board 21.
I claim:
1. An exercising device comprising a wheel supported frame, a spring member, means.
for securing the forward end of the spring member-to .the frame, said spring member extending to a point over; the rear portion of the frame, a seat secured to the rear end: of. the spring member, a foot board pivotally.
"mounted under the spring member, pivoted links connected with-the foot board and the seat to connectthe-seat and foot board, and said foot board adapted to receive'the feet of the person seated on the seat, to raise and lower the seat when the foot board is pressed by the. operator.
2. An exercising device comprising a Wheel supported frame, aspringmember secured at the front of the; frame and overlying the frame,=a seat securedlto the spring member and having. openingsto permit thelegs of the user to. extendrthrough the seat, a Wide foot board pivotallymounted directly under the seat and adapted to receive the feet ofthe person using the device, and links connecting the seat and foot board to transmit movement of the foot board to the seat.-
In testimony that I claim thewforegoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed' my signatures WILLIAM E. SPERRY.
