Description

M. DURYEE CLOTHES DRIER July 14, "1931.
/Vda Filed Oct. 6t 1930 J4mm/7.
Patented July 114, 1931 UNITED STATES l 1,813,911A l MACK DURYEE. oF BAY Monreale CLOTHES nimm Application led October 6, 2l-936).. .Serla'INm 4.863649.
This invention relates to an improved clothes drier, and more particularly to an adjustable drier, which is adjustable vertically so that it can be readily lowered to per- 5 mit clothes to be easily placed thereon, after which the reel may be raised, eliminating any possibility of the clothes dragging on the ground as the reel revolves, and so that full advantage may be taken of stronger air curi0 rents which prevail at higher stratus.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical, and economical clothes drier provided with a bearing, so that the ree'l rotates with a minimum of fric- 15 tion, and is actuated by very gentle air currents.
A further object is to provide simple and easily operable means for raisingthe reel, and also provide means for holding it in ad- 80 justed position.
The above and other objects will appear as the specification progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawings inr which I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views thereof.
In the drawings. Fig. l is a view showing my improved l clothes drier in side elevation, the dotted lines showing the reel in raised'position.
Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary plan view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the head and bearing construction.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional plan through the standard.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged detail showing the ratchet wheel and ratchet.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail showing the manner of connecting the hanger bars.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slightly different head construction.
Referring nowmore particularly to the drawings in which I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 indicates a base on which a vertically disposed pipe standard 6 is mounted, vsaid standard being provided with an elongated 'andolle end of .e cable member 2.6 sseoured slotted opening 7 for a purpose'tobe presently, described.` v y telescoping. pipe section 8. is slidably mountedY in the .standard 6, and `a laterally projectinglug Sis anchored therein, andpro- 65 gfects .throughthe .elongated opening 7 inithe standard.Y A. subStantiallyU-shaped frame HB fits 4 over the upper zend ofv the. standard, and'ananti-friction bearing l() is interposed between the upper `endoffthe. standard and el the frame, and to Wh-,ohhitiS secured ill-.any approved' mennen. a eoller- `11.1 is Slidably mounted? 01.1- Seid-standard and the-*lower end of the frame is rigidly, secured.. thereto by means. of rivets ,1.2.y E

toothed ratchet wheel ,271s also Seoulef on the Shaft?24, and? al'rat'chet 28 is pivotally mounted' on one of said side bars, and is adapted to engage said ratchet wheel for locking it in set position.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, I have shown a slightly different head construction, this includes a preferably hard wood block 29 secured to the frame B in any approved manner, a socket 30 being formed in the face thereof and a round headed bolt 31 is provided inthe end of the sleevey 8 and when this head and socket is preferably lubricated, it
makes a very simple and practical bearing, which due to its simplicity, is preferable to the construction shown in F ig. 3.
The reel is adjusted by means of a cra-nk 29 which is secured on the end of the shaft 24, and when it is desired to raise or lower the reel, the crank is actuated so that the cable 26 is wound on the drum, and the telescoping section 8 is raised accordingly. The bearing l0 insures ease of operation, and the reelv structure is light and can be easily raised and operated. Y
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that I have perfected a very simple, substantial, and easy operating clothes drier.
What I claim is:
1. In a clothes drier, a standard having inner and outer telescoping sections, a collar slidably mounted on, said standard, a U- shaped frame secured to saidcollar, and an antifriction bearing interposed between the top of said standard and the fra-me.
2. In a clothes drier, a telescoping pipe standard, a clothes reel frame revolubly mounted on said standard, and including an antifriction bearing` interposed between the top of the standard and the clothes reel frame, and means for adjusting the height of the clothes reel frame.
3. In a clothes drier, a telescoping standard comprising inner and outer telescoping sections, a reel frame mounted thereon and including a U-shaped frame, an antifriction bearing interposed between the topv of the standard and the said frame, a winding drum mounted on the outer section of the standard, and a cable anchored to the inner section ofsaid standard and adapted to raise the inner section and reel frame when the drum is rotated. Y
4f. In a clothesV drier, a telescoping standard including an inner sleeve member, a reel frame` mounted on the standard and com` prising spaced apart collar members to which said reel frame is secured, an antifriction Vbearing interposed between the top of the standard and the reel frame, a drumlmounted on said standard and having a cable anchored thereto, the opposite end of the vcable being anchored to the inner sleeve, and angularly disposed members for bracing the arms of the reel frame. f
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature.
