The present invention relates to a` nut cracker and has for its prime object to provide a structure which is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, em-
bodies a convenient and compact arrangement of parts, may be readily and easily clamped to a table or other suitable support, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted for the purpose designed. y

With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates a relatively flat plate having a flange 2 rising from one longitudinal edge thereof. Rising from the plate 1 inwardly from one end ofthe' plate and at right angles to the flange 2 1s a flange 3, the same being disposed transversely of the plate 1 and of a width substantially equal to the width of the plate 1.

elongated angular member or arm 4 extending forwardly from the longitudinal side edge of the plate 3 remote from the flange 2. The angular member or' arm 4 at its free end is provided with a head f5 projecting laterally therefrom, and this head-is provided at its inner face with a recess 6.
On the inner face of the flange 2 at the upper edge thereof and adjacent the flange 3 fixed `a blocl'f; 7 having a suitable opening 8 therein through which rotatably extends a threaded shaft 9 with a hand wheel 12 at the outer'` end thereof.
The shaft 9 is rotatable through the block 7 as before intimated and said shaft 9 is *provided on its periphery with a longitudinally extending groove 10. At the top of the opening 8, the block 7 is provided with suitable threads 11 extending into the opening for cooperation with the thread of the shaft 9 as suggested in vFigure 5 whereupon by rotating the shaft 9 the same will bemoved longitudinally of the member `or arm 4 for a purpose to be presently made manifest.
A head 13 is providedv with a lateral extension or arm 14 having a groove 15 in the bottom thereof for slidably receiving the upper edge ofthe angle member or arm 4.
rlhe head 13 is hollow and has one side and one half the bottom open as is clearly indicated. in Figure G and the end of the head 13 is opposed to the recess 6 and has formed therein an inwardly tapered opening 16 coaxially disposed in respect to the inwardly tapering recess 6. s 85 The. shaft 9 at its free end terminates in a reduced pin or extension 17 which extends through the opposite end of the head 13 and has a Cotter pin or the like 18 through the end thereof within the head 13 as clearly suggested in Figure 6.
A V-shaped trough 19 is provided at one side with a laterally extending flange 2O merging into an upstanding flange 21 having vertical slots 22 formed therein to receive screws 23 threaded into the inner side of the arm or angle member 4 so that the trough 19 is located below the head 13 and extends from the outer vertical edge of the iange 3 to the lateral projection 5 of the arm 4.
Thus it will be seen that the trough 19 may be adjusted to and from the head 13 depending upon the size of the nut being cracked.
By threading the shaft 9 in' the direction of its hand wheel 12 it will be seen that the head 13 may be moved toward or away from the extension 5. Thus the end of the nut may be inserted in the recess 6 and the head 13 brought up to engage the outer endof the nut with said outer end of the nut being received in the opening 16 of the head and then the shaft 9 may be threaded inwardly to force the head 13 toward the eX-V tension 5 to Vcrack or start Vthe crushing of the shell of the nut.
Obviously by rotating the shaft 9 away from the head extension 5 it will be seen that the nut may be released from between said head extension 5 and head 13 and any loose portion of the shell will fall into the trough 19. In this way as is evidenced,` the nut may be sufficiently cracked without having their shell fragments thrown about as to be scattered on the floor or the like and furthermore that the shells will be cracked in such a manner that the meat may be more easily land readily picked therefrom.
IVhile obviously the nut cracker comprehended by this invention may be held in one hand, there is also provided means for suitably securing or clamping the same to a suitable support such as a table T, which means includesa bracket arm 25 extending downwardly from and at right angles to the base plate 1, said bracket arm forming as it were a continuation of the flange 2.
At its lower end the `arm 25 is provided with an inwardly directed lug 26 disposed in parallelism to the plate 1 and the lug 26 is provided with a suitably threaded open-y ing through which is threaded a clamping screw 27, the headed end 28 of which may be rotated into ei'igagenient with the under face of the table, and the plate 1 resting on the top of the table cooperates with the head 28 of the clamping screw 27 for securely clamping the nut cracker to the table or like support.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in the art without a more detailed description thereof.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred' embodiment of my invention, it is to beunderstood that changes in the detiils of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of partsV may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A nut cracker of the class described comprising an elongated member, a head on the member projecting laterally therefrom, a movable head having an arm slidably mounted on the'member to move toward and away from the first mentioned head, a block on the elongated member provided with an kopening partially provided with internal threads, a threaded shaft threaded through the opening in the block, said shaft provided with a. longitudinally extending groove within which to seat the threaded portion of the block to allow longitudinal sliding movement of the shaft, and means for freely securing said second mentioned head to one end of said shaft whereby when said shaft is rotated said second mentioned head will be moved vtov'vard or away fro'm the first mentioned head.
2. A nut cracker o'f the class described comprising a plate,- a flange rising from said plate, said flange having an elongated member projecting laterally from onel edge thereof, said elongated member at its free end provided with a head projecting laterally therefrom, a block on said flange above said plate, a shaft threaded through said block, a head on one end of said shaft for movement toward or away from the lirst mentioned head, an arm extending laterallyv from said movable head having a gilide channel for receiving the upper edge of said member for maintaining the movable head inv a-linement with the stationary head during operation ofthe shaft and trough adjustably secured on said elongated member for supporting a nut between said head.
