COMBINED FILING SPINDLE, GUARD, AND PUNCH Filed June 16, 194'? w V 5712 .41 660/76 L. 7 BY My ATTORN EY Patented Aug. 29, 1950 COMBINED FILING SPINDLE, GUARD, AND- PUNCH George L. Gilbert, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Ralph G. Wenham and Maurice E. Follett, both of Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application June 16, 1947, Serial No. 754,995
guard therefor and punch which is easily manipulated to and from guard position, the guard being eliectively supported as a punch head.
Second, to provide a structure having these advantages which is very economical in its parts and in the assembly thereof and at the same time strong and durable.
Further objects relating to details and economies of .the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side perspective view of a structure embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 3 with the filing spindle and base omitted, the combined punch head and guard being shown in retracted position by full lines and in operative position as a guard by dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partially in vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with the combined punch head and guard shown in elevated position by full lines and in guard position by dotted The embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a base I preferably in the form of a circular casting and having a raised central portion 2. The base is preferably provided with a non-metallic facing 3 secured to the bottom thereof as by means of an adhesive indicated at 4.
The filing spindle 5 is centrally positioned on the raised portion 2 of the base. At one side of the filing spindle I mount a post 6 which extends above the plane of the tip of the spindle.
The combined guard and punch head 1 is provided with a downwardly facing socket 8 slidably and rotatably receiving the upper end of the post. The post is provided with a flattened forwardly inclined surface 9 on its front side or side adjacent the spindle, this surface constituting a guideway for the pin I ll arranged transversely through the socket of the head. The engagement of this pin with the forwardly. inclined guide surface insures that the punch head is accurately aligned with the spindle to serve as a guard therefor and 3 Claims. (Cl. 1297) l 2 i l also to align the punch plunger with the spindle and it prevents swinging of the punch headwhen it is in lowered position. i i
The pin is arranged transversely through the socket to properly engage this flattened surface when the head is in guard position.
At the upper end of the guide surface'B, the post is provided with a peripheral groove or recess H adapted to receive the pin when the head is in elevated position. The bottom of the groove constitutes a supporting shoulder for the pin. The post has a cylindrical portion l3 at the top so that the pin serves to retain thehead on the pos. l
The recess ll preferably extends aroundthe post so that the head may be swung clear of the spindle and to position it a a guard or punch it is only necessary to swing it around. into approximate alignment with the spindle and the pin sliding down the guideway completes the alignment.
The punch plunger i4 is reciprocatingly mounted in the vertical bore l5 in the swinging end of the head. A coiled spring l6 seating on the shoulder I 1 acts to yieldingly support the plunger in retracted position.
The punch has a recess I 8 in its lower end adapted to receive the end of the spindle so that papers may be placed over the end of the spindle and the plunger actuated to force them onto the spindle. When it is desired to remove the papers, the punch head is lifted and swung to retracted position as shown by full lines in Fig. 2 and the papers may be stripped ofi from the spindle. The punch head in operative position serves as an elfective guard for the spindle as well as a support for the punch.
cut, is:
1. A combined filing spindle, punch and spins dle guard comprising a base, a spindle: mounted thereon, a post mounted on said base at one side of said spindle and projecting above the plane of the tip of the spindle, said post having a flattened forwardly inclined guide surface on its side adjacent the spindle, and a peripheral groove at punch head when it is in elevated retracted p0.
sition, the pin serving to retain the punch head on the post, the downwardit inclined flattened surface acting to align the head with the spindle, a punch reciprocatingly mounted in the swinging end of the head tolalign withthes-pine dle when the pin is in engagement with the flattened surface of the post, andaretracting spring,
for said punch.
2. A combined filing spindle, punch andspindle:
guard comprising a base, a spindle mounted thereon, a post-mounted onsaidbase atone side of lsaidspindleand projecting above the plane of the tip of the spindle, said. post having: aflat!- tened-guide-surfaoe vunits side adjacent the. spindle; and: alrecessatl-theytopof saidflattened-surface, a punch head having a downwardly facing pest receiving socket, a: pin on said head disposed transversely; through said socket and slidably engageable with:- the said flattened side of the post when the-head; is'in verticallalignment with the spindle-and: swingable into'said recesswhen the headlisain elevated-position, the bottom of the recess constituting a shoulder. for swingablyr supporting the punch head when it is in elevatedretracted: position the pin. serving to; retain the punch head on the post, and a punch reciprocatingly mounted in the swinging end of the head to align with the spindle when the pin is in engagement with the flattened surface of the post.
3. A combined filing spindle, spindle guard and punch comprising a base, a spindle mounted thereon, alpost mountedonsaidlbase atrone side of vthe spindle and projecting above the-t-plane of the tip of the spindle, a punch head mounted on said post for swinging and vertical adjustment, said post having an annular recess adjacent its upper'end andia noncircular portion extending downwardly from said annular recess for a substantial distance, said punch head having an element verticallyslidably engageable with said non-circular portion when the punch head is in vertical alinement with said spindle, said element being engageable in said annular recess to permit lateral adjustment of the punch head when in elevated position relative to said spindle, said annular recess swingably retaining the head in its elevatedposition until it is returned; into vertical alignment withthe spindle, and a'punch reciprocatingly mounted on the head to coact with said spindle;
