This invention relates to a stitching guide-attachment for sewing machines. It is an object of the present invention to provide a stitching guide attachment which may be secured to the sewing machine table and which is adjustable to different distances to guide either the edge of the material or the stitching thread and wherein the guide arms may be extended readily to an out-of-use position when the attachment is not being used and wherein the guide arms are adjustable to different distances while at the same time being adapted to be swung to their out-of-use positions.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a stitching attachment for sewing machines having adjustable guide-arms which is of simple construction, adapted to be adjusted-without the use of special tools, has minimum parts, inexpensive to manufacturaconvenient to use and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connedtion with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a sewing machine and of the attachment embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the attachment.
Fig. 4 is a collective view of the parts of the attachment separated from one another.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken through one of the'connections of one of the arms. with the main body and on line 5-1-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the attachment with one 'of the guide arms angularly displaced from the other arm and in its out-of-use position.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a modified form of construction having only one guide arm.
Referring now to the figures, I 5 represents a sewing machine table having a sewing machine head l6 extending above the same with a needle ll extending toward cloth material Hi to provide a stitching 19 from a thread 2|. My stitching attachrnent, as indicated at 22, may be secured to the table l5 by screws 23 and 24 extending through a main body 25 and in an elongated slot thereof to permit the adjustment of the body along the table l5 upon the screws being loosened, the screws at the same time preventing the angular displacement of the member 25 while it is adjusted. The slot is indicated at 26.
The body 25 has a vertically extending flange extending about one end and one side of the 2, can... (01. 112 15s) same as indicated at 2'! and from a part of which extends a supporting portion 28, Fig. 4, having axially aligned slots 29 and 30 with scales ill and 32 extending respectively along one side of each slot.
A guide arm 33 is connected to the slot 29 while a longer guide arm 34 is connected to the slot 30.
The arm 33 has an angle formation 36 serving as a guide against which the material may run and a laterally bent connecting portion 31 having an opening 38 therein. A pivot member is extended upwardly through the slot 29 as indicated at 39, Fig. 5, and has a squared face portion 4| adapted to ride along the slots 29 and 30 and engaging with the side thereof in such a manner as to prevent the rotational movement of the member 39 in the slot. This member has a bottom plate formation 42 which supports a coil spring 43 surrounding the pivot member 39 and a retaining ring 44 therefor, Fig. 5.
An indicator plate 45 having a straight edge 46 and a squared opening 41 extending over the top of the laterally extending portion 28 to have alignment with the scale 3!. The action of the.
The arm 34 is pivotally connected to the slot 39 on the outer end of the portion 28 of the body 25 in the same manner as just described in connection with the attachment of the short arm 33 with the slot 29. The arm 34 is relieved as indicated at 53 in order that the inner face of the member 34 can be brought flush with the outer vertical face of the member 33 and at the same time have its upper face lie flush with the under face of laterally extending portions 28 so that it can be retained against upward displacement by the laterally extending portion 28.
The arm 34 has an angled portion 55 which corresponds to the portion 36 of the small arm 33 and serves as a gauge over which the material or work pieces are extended. Arm 33' has an angled portion 56.
Each of the arms 33 and 34 has horizontally extending faces on their angled portions 55 and 5B. The face on the inner arm is adapted to ride 3 over the end portion of the upwardly extending flange 21 while the face on the outer arm will ride over the face on the inner arm whereby to lock or support the arms against downward displacement into the material.
The portion 31 cooperates with the under face of the laterally extending portion 28 of the body 25 to prevent the upward displacement of the small arm 34 while the long arm is provided with a portion 51 adapted to cooperate with the under face of the laterally extending portion 28 to pro-'- vent its upward displacement. Accordingly, the arms are held against vertical displacement in both up and down directions.
Referring now to Fig. 7, there is shown a modi- I fled form of the device wherein only one arm is utilized. A body Si is connected to the sewing machine top in the same manner as is the body 25. This body ti has an upwardly extending flange-62 along one end and along one side and from a portion of this flange there extends outwardly a laterally bent portion 63 having a slot 64 in which a member 39 with an arm 65 is adjustable. The pivot member 39 retains an index plate 66 adapted to be adjusted along scale 61. The arm 65 has an angled portion 68 with a top face 69 adapted to cooperate with the upwardly extending flange 62 to retain the portion 65 against downward displacement. The arm .55 has a laterally extending portion li adapted to body 6i whereby to prevent the upward displacement of the arm 65.
It should be apparent that there has been provided a stitching attachment for sewing machines, whereby arms can be adjusted into po sitions whereby they may serve as guides for the material and for the stitching being effected. It should also be apparent that the arms will be retained when in their use positions against both downward and upward displacement.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
