UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,330, dated August 22, 1876; application filed April is, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OATHRINE A. GRIS- woLD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corset, of which the following is a specification:
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved corset.
The object of this invention is to so improve the corset for which Letters Patent have been granted to me under date of July 4, 1871, No. 116,585, that the same may be made available for imparting abetter carriage to the upper part of the body, and prevent, by strengthening the back and bracing the shoulders, the inclination to stoop over and contract the chest.
The invention consists of a corset with adjustable shoulder-straps, which are connected at the back by lateral bands or lacings.
In the drawing, A represents my improved corset, provided with the shoulder-straps B, that arecutcurving in such a manner as to fit smoothly to the form of the shoulders. The shoulder-straps B are adjusted to the shoulders of the wearer either by elastics or by buckles, as desired.
The peculiar cut of the shoulderstraps adapts them to fit comfortably to the shoulders by elevating the inner edges above the outer, as shown in the drawing, so that there is no binding on the arms-or shoulders. The rear parts of the shoulder-straps are either connected laterally by one or more bands adjustable by buckles, or, preferably, by a lacing, 0, that is passed through eyelets at the inner edges of the shoulder-straps. The bands or lacings extend to suitable height to a point near the rounding of the shoulder, and may be drawn more or less tight, as required, by the inclination of the wearer to a stooping position of the body.
The connection of the shoulder-straps .by bands or lacings carries the shoulders back, throws the chest forward, and aids greatly in giving a more erect and graceful carriage to the upper part of the body, so as to gradually overcome the inclination to bending forward and contracting the chest.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Ladies corsets having shoulder-straps constructed and arranged in connection with the back, as shown, in combination with bands or lacing adjustable by buckles, as set forth.
GATHRINE A. GRISWOLD.
