My invention relates to railway cars and has for one of its objects the production of improved means for rigidly bracing and connecting the body bolster of a railway car to the center sill thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for rigidly connecting the sections of a two part bolster to the car center sill. I
A principal feature of the invention consists in providing a railway car having a body bolster fashioned with portions overlying the car center sill with a load sustaining member rigidly connected to the latter and to the bolster.
' Another feature of the invention resides in construbting a body bolster of a plurality of sections. respectively provided with upstanding extensions overlying the car center sill. and in associating therewith a load sustaining member rigidly secured-to each of said extensions and to the center sill.
Other and more specific features residin'g in advantageous forms and relations of arts will hereinafter appear and be pointe out in the claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1' indicates the car side sills which may be of any preferred construction. The center sill construction of the car is also of usual form and involves sill members 2 having a web 3 and upper and lower flanges 4 and 5,
respectively. The upper flanges are pref erably rigidly connected by a top cover-plate 1929. Serial No. 354,358.
6 and the lower flanges may be likewise connected by a bottom cover-plate 7.
The body bolster is formed of a plurality of sections 9, preferably of cast steel, each of which is substantially identical in construction'. The bolster sections are respectively interposed between the side sills 1 and center sills 2 and each is formed with a substantially vertical main web portion 10 and with top and bottom flanges 11 and 12, respectively, which project on opposite sides of the web. The inner and outer ends of each of the sections are also formed with flanges 13 and 14, the inner flange 13 aflording means for rigidly connecting the section to the web of the ad oining center sill by rivets 15 and the outer flange 14 affording means for rigidly connecting the section to the adjoining side sill by rivets 16. The top and bottom flanges of the sections may advantageously be tied together by a plurality of diagonally arranged truss-like flanges 17 which-are so ar- .ranged as to most effectively resist those forces to which the bolster is subjected. To reduce the weight of the sections, portions of the web 10 intermediate the diagonal flanges and adjacent portions of the marginal flanges may be apertured as at 18.
The top flange 11 of each section is preferably inclined to lie in a plane parallel to and form a support for the inclined floor sheets 19 which are preferably overlappingly connected to the flange by rivets-2.0. Inter- .mediate the web and top flange each bolster section isprovided with a portion 21 which inclines in a direction opposite to that of the top flange. This portion 21 is disposed so as to reduce to a minimum any eccentricity which may be developed in the bolster due to the loads imposed thereupon.
- The bolster sections are respectively provided with oppositely projecting upstanding plate-like integral extensions 22 which overlie the top of the center sill and adjoin adjacent its midpoint. Each of the exten sions is formed with a web portion 23, an inclined top flange 24 and an intermediate inclined portion 25 which respectively lie in the same plane as and, in effect, constitute continuations of corresponding portions of ward the section of which it is a part and may conveniently be fashioned with a reinforcing flange 26.
As the bolster extends a relatively great distance above the center sill a member 27 is provided which, in addition to serving as means for rigidly connecting the sections, serves as a load sustaining member for effectively bracing the. bolster adjacent its center. This member is formed with top and bottom flanges 28 and 29 respectively, the former bein secured by the rivets 20 to the underside o the top flange 24 of each of the bolster extensions and the latter being secured by rivets 31 to the upper flanges I of the center sills and to the top cover plate 6 thereof. Projecting upwardly from the bottom flange 29 is a wall portion 32 which extends in a direction substantially normal to the top flanges 24 of the.
bolster extensions. Intermediate its inclined portion 32 and its top flange 28 the member is formed with angularly disposed portions 33and 34 which lie in planes parallel to andare adapted to engage with portions 23 and 25 of each of the bolster extensions. These portions 33 and 34 are fashioned with a plurality of apertures for receiving rivets 35 employed for rigidly connecting the member 27 to each of the bolster extensions.
The member 27 may be reinforced by a plurality of upstanding rigidifying flanges and while any number of these flanges may be employed only three have been illustrated in the drawings. The center flange 36 may conveniently extend continuously from the bottom flange 29 to the top flange 28 and the two outer flanges 37 may, if desired, extend from the bottom flange to the point of intersection of the relatively inclined portions 33 and 34. While the bottom flange 29 of the member 27 is only substantially as wide as the distance between the center sills, the angularly disposed portions 28, 33 and 34: thereof extend beyond opposite sides of the center sill to obtain a more rigid connection between the sections. 1
If desired plates 38 and 39 may. be'used to afford additional means for connecting the sections, the plate 38 being interposed between the floor sheets and the top flange 2 4 of the bolster extensions and being secured thereto by the rivets 20. Plate 39 preferably overlappingly engages portions 23 and 25 of the extensions and may be secured thereto by the rivets 35.
, From the foregoing it will be observed that means is provided. for connecting the bolster sections in a most rigid manner and that the member 27, in addition to serving as a connecting member functions as a load sustaining member whereby a large portion of the bolster providedwith a portion'overlying the center sill in spaced relation to its cover plate, and load sustaining means interposed between-and rigidly secured to the cover plate and the said portion of the bolster for bracing the latter.
2. In a railway hopper car having an inclined floor sheet, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster having an inclined top flange overlying and spaced above the center sillfor supporting said sheet, and load sustaining means involving a member interposed between the said flange and the center sill, said means being overlappingly secured to the center sill in a substantially horizontal plane.
3. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster having an inclined top flange spaced above the center sill and forming a support for a floor sheet of the --car, and a member interposed between and rigidly secured to thecenter sill and said flange, said member having angularlydisposed portions substantially normal to the flange.
4. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster having angularly disposed portions overlying and spaced above the center sill, one of said portions constituting a flange for supporting a floor sheetof the car, and a load sustaining member rigidly secured to the center sill and the angularly disposed portions of the bolster for bracing the latter, said member being overlappingly secured to the center sill in a substantiallyhorizontal plane.
5. In a railway car, the combination'with a center sill provided with a top cover plate, of a body bolster having a top flange overlying and spaced above the center sill, and a load sustaining member interposed between the bolster and center sill and provided with a plurality of flanges, one of said last-named flanges being overlappingly securedto the cover plate of the center sill and the other of said flanges being secured to the underside of the said flange of the bolster.

9. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with upstanding extensions overlying the center sill, the upper portions of said extensions being formed with a plurality of angularly disposed portions, one of said ortions affording a support for the car oor, and a load sustaining member rigidly secured to each of the angularly disposed portions of each of said extensions and to the center sill.
10. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with upstanding integral extensions overlying the top of the center sill, a load sustaining member having a plurality of flanges respectively secured to each of said extensions and to the center sill, said flanges being connected by an inclined wall portion.
11. In a railway car, the combination with a cen er sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with upstanding extensions overlying the top of the center sill, and a load sustaining member having a plurality of flanges respectively secured in overlapping relation to each of the bolster extensions and to the top of the center sill, said member bein fashioned with aplurality of upright rigi ifying flanges.
12. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with upstanding integral extensions overlying the center sill, each of said extensions be ing formed with a plurality of angularly disposed portions, one of said portions affording a support for the car floor, and a load sustaining member having its upper portion fashioned to conform to the contour of the angularly disposed portions of each of said extensions, said member being rigidly secured to each of said extensions and to the center sill.
13. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with integral upstanding extensions overlying the top of the center sill, each of said extensions being formed with a plurality of angularly disposed portions, one of said portions afiording a support for the car floor, and a load sus-' taining member rigidly secured to each of said sections and to the center sill, the u per portion of said member bein form to overlappingly enga e each of t e angularly disposed portions 0 said extensions and the ower portion of said member being formed with a plurality of rigidifying ribs.

In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively provided with integral upstanding extensions overlymg the center sill, and a load sustaining member having top and bottom flanges respectively secured to each of said extensions and to the center sill, said member being provided with a plurality of upstanding rigidifying flanges flanges one of which extends continuously from one of said last-named flanges to the other.
15. In a railway hopper car, the combination with a center sill having a top cover plate, of a body bolster having a top flange overlying and spaced above the center sill adapted to supportingly cooperate with a floor sheetof the car, and a load sustaining member interposed between the center sill and the flange for bracing the latter, said member being supported upon and rigidly secured to the cover plate of the center sill.

In a railway hopper car, the combination with a center sill, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively disposed on opposite sides of the center sill, each of said sections being inte allyformed with an extension overlying and gpaced above the center sill, and a load sustaining member rigidly secured to each of said extensions and to the center sill.
17. In a railway hopper car, the combination with a center sill having a top cover plate, of a body bolster formed of a plurality of sections respectively disposed on opposite sides of the center sill, each of said sections being integrally formed with an extension overlying and spaced above the center sill, and means rigidly connecting said sections, said means constituting a load sustaining member and being secured to the center sill in overlapping relation to the cover plate thereof.
