KNIFE FOR HULLERS Filed Sept. 2'7, 1927 Patented June 23, 193i Fries OLIVER ctsnvmons, or LAKEWOOD, onto, nssrenoa TO THE narrower. roof. comrAnY, oroLEvELAnn, OHIO, AconroRArm-s or onro KNIFE r03 HULLERS Application filed September'27, 1927. Serial No. 222,249.
This invention relates to hullers of the type commonly. known asbar hullers, and has for its principal object to provide a knife for use with such hullers which is exceptionally inexpensive to manufacture as compared with knives at present employed.
The knife embodying the present invention is a modified form of that disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 222; 250, filed Sept. '27, 1927. Inasmuch as the mannerof attachingand securing the knives tothe' cylinder and concave is clearly disclosed in the said'application, it is not believed necessary to illustrate that portion of the huller in the present instance as the invention relates entirely to the structure of the knife I It is commonly known that knives employed in hullers are provided with'a plurality of "cuttingedges and theknives are so disposed in the cylinder and concave'that all of the 1 within their associated grooves. the fact'that these knives are not sharpened edges can be employed at: difierent times by merely reversing the posltlon of the-knives In vlew'of for further use inasmuch asthe expense in connection with the purchase of new knives is less than that involved in sharpening the chased.
used knives,new knives are consequently pur- V Th s involves considerable expense and adds considerably to the'overhead 1n connection with the operation of the huller. It
will be apparent,thereforeythat any saving in labor in connectionwith the manufacture of the. knives will result in a saving in cost,
and in View of the greatquantiti'es of knives used, such an item is ofmaterial importance.
' It is, therefore, afurther object of the invention is quite an improvement over the types of knives generally employed inasmuch as the latter include a longitudinal groove extending throughout the entire length of the knives and upon opposite sides, which requires machining andmvolves additional labor.
To effect a further saving in production cost the knives may be made of substantially one-third the amount of material required in the productionof the customary type of knife by providing a filler or backer member adapted to rest within the base of the groove formed upon the cylinder and concave with which the knives are adapted'to engage. Thisconstruction is clearly disclosed in the application above-referred to. I
""l i 'ith'the objects above indicated and other i objects hereinafter explained in view, my invention consists in the arrangement of the specific knife herein disclosed. Referring to the drawings-e- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a huller knife;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken through one of the recesses andshowing the manner in which the means for retaining the knives within the grooves of the cylinder and concave engages with the recesses in the knives;
Fig. 4; is a front elevational view of a m0dified form of the knife; and
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken through the recesses of the knife in Fig. 4 and showing the filler or backer member which makes possible a reduction in the depth of the knife. i i
In the drawings, 10 indicates a knife which is adapted to be disposed Within a groove providedin a cylinder or concave of a huller, the construction of which is not shown as the same is fully disclosed in my co-pending application above referred to. This knife 10 is formed of tool steel, and, as shown in the drawings, is a relatively flat bar of rectangular cross section. The knife is provided with a plurality of cutting edges 11 extending throughout the length of the bar. The knife is reversible in such a manner that all of the cutting edges may be employed at different times by merely reversing the bar fromend to end or from front to back. The knife is retained within the groove provided in the cylinder-or concave by any suitable means, the meansahere indicated being a bolt ,12
