BARBER'S CDIVIB Application July 16,
The present invention relates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to those employed by barbers in the prosecution of their calling.
As is well understood, the common practice in comb manufacture is to give to the back edge of the comb an approximately straight line or a line slightly convex, conditions depriving a barber using such combs of a secure thumb-rest as held in hand, ordinarily, by a barber in hair-trimming.
Another faulty condition in ordinary comb construction, as viewed from the barbers standpoint, lies in the fact that the combs tooth-points lie substantially in a common straight line, making it difficult,- on account of the blunt ends thus provided the comb, for the barber to lift the locks of hair from depressions and to readily reach that immediately behind the ears. These difficulties are eliminated in the present construction, the combs here having extremities whose teeth-points lie in a line curving from combextremity to comb-extremity with its con rexity facing outwardly, thus removing that extreme bluntnes's of co1nb-ends usually found, and so objectionable, v in comb constructions intended for barbers use.
The primary objects of the present invention are to remedy the difficulties previously referred to by substituting a double-reverse curve for the comb back the central section of which has its convexity extending for wardly and its concavity milled to provide a suitable thumb-rest for the barbers thumb in gripping normally a section of the comb body, and, additionally, that of forming the teethpoints to lie within a gently curving line extending from comb-extremity to comb-extremity with its convexity facing outwardly.
' The invention resides-in the peculiar contour given to the combs back edge and to the inward curving of the central section thereof and the milling borne thereby, together with the curving of the tooth-edge line extending from comb-extremity to comb-extremity with the convexity of the line facing outwardly and the narrowed bluntness of the comb ends.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like 1939. Serial No. 463,255.
reference characters refer to like parts, throughout Figure 1 represents a barber in the act of hair-trimming together with the comb as normally held in the hands of a barber while engaged in the act thereof; 7
Figure 2 is a blank form from which the comb is formed, showing the nature of the combs back-curve, together with the extreme sweep of curve from comb-extremity to combextremity and the narrowed comb ends re sulting from this construction; and
Figure 3 is aperspective View, approximately full size, of a comb constructed in accordance with my invention, showing both the character of the curve of the combs back edge and the milling borne by the central section thereof, and, additionally, the character of the curve within which the teeth-points are made to lie and the narrowed comb ends.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral e indicates, in a general way, a barber in the act of hair-trimming, S'indicatinga normally held comb, 6 a pair of shears, 7 a lock of hair in the act of being trimmed, 8,9 and 10 a double-reverse curve constituting the back edge of a blank from which a comb is formed, of which 9 is the central section tiereof and 8 and 10 the reverse curved extensions therefrom, l1 and 18 the extreme ends and 11, 12 and 13 the slightly curved frontal edge,-the 001118) of which faces forwardly. In a comb proper, as represented in Figure 3, the doublereverse back edge curve is indica-' 16, 15, the central section being ii 16 with a milled edgcl? and having curved sections 1d and 15 terminating at the comb ends 18 and 20, the tooth-sections being indicated at 23, 24, the points of the teeth constituting these sections conforming to a curve indicated at 18, 19 and 20 joining, respectively, at 18 and 20 the extremities of the curves 14 and 15 to form the somewhat narrowed extreme ends of the comb, these bearing the widened and strengthened ini tial end teeth 21 and 22 of the comb.
The blank represented in Figure 2 may be stamped from any suitable material, preferably from some form of aluminum sheet materialof a desired thickness and the blank thus obtained die-stamped to form the comb,
. and with its concave surface milled to provide a secure thumb-rest. 8. In a comb of the character described, a comb-back having centrally a. concavity facing outwardly, said concavity being milled and adapted to form a thnmb-rest for the convenienceof a barber manipulatingsaicl comb.
tooth-points lying in a single curve the convexity of which faces outwardly.
8. The combination, in a device of the character described, of an elongated body portion the outer edge of which conforms in contour to that of a-double-reverse curve, the central portion being concave and milled and the curved extens'ionsltherefrom reversed as to curvature, and teeth borne by the opposite edge of said body portion, the points of said teeth lying withina curve extending from comb-extremity to comb-extremity with its convexity facing outwardly, the curve bounding the said tooth edges meeting the extremities of said extension curves and forming therewith slightly blunted comb ends'bearing, respectively, a shortened and broadened initial tooth.
In testimony whereof I herenntoaffix my signature. 7 i JAMES; W. INGRAM.
