DRAIN DEVICE Application filed August 30, 1930. Serial 110. 479,053.
This invention relates to a device which is designed and adapted for handling dishes, cups, bowls, glassware and culinary metal ware, such as knives, forks and spoons, when it is desired to wash and dry such articles.
The invention has for its general object, the provision of a device of the indicated character which ma be used advantageously in the househol particularly in small kitchenettes for the stated purpose, which will be of improved and inexpensive construction, and which will be of substantial and efficient design.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates the device in use in conjunction with a sink, the latter being shown in dot and dash lines;
Figure 2 illustrates the device converted for carrying articles therein;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the device;
Figures 4 to 8, inclusive, are detail views of different features of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings it will be a parent that the device includes a receptacle, basket or tray 10, which may be of any preferred size and which, in the present instance, is of rectangular formation, and is constructed of wire, rendering the same pervious to liquid. The receptacle 10 is subdivided into a plurality of compartments, a relatively large compartment for dishes, plates and the like, cups, glassware, and a compartment for utensils, such as knives, forks and spoons. If desired, means may be provided in the large compartment of the receptacle, such as frames 11, for retaining dishes or plates edgewise or in vertically disposed positions. Elements 12 conmembers 13 is bent to present relatively short portions 15, to which the member 14 is joined.
structed of metal rods or stout wire are em-.
The side members 13 of each of the elements 8 12 are provided with terminal eyes 16 which are connected with pivot studs 17 connected, in any suitable manner, to the side walls of the receptacle 10, respectively, thus connecting the element 12 for pivotal movement to diiferent ositions in relation to the receptacle 10. glne ofthe elements 12 is somewhat smaller in width than the other element 12 so as to move through the same when the elements 12 are moved from one position in relation to the basket 10 to the other. A pair of retainers or clips 18 is provided for each vof the elements 12 to retain it in a position in constitute legs for the receptacle 10, and that the member 14 and portions 15 ofeach element will serve as feet for the latter so constituted.
It will therefore be obvious that thereceptacle 10 may be supported in an elevated position in a sink," for the purpose of'draining the water from the articles within the receptacle, and from the receptacle itself, for the purpose of dryin the articles. It will also be obvious that t e elements 12 may be moved on their pivots to positions in relation to the receptacle 10, as shown in Figure 2, to provide handles for the receptacle; it being apparent that the members 14 serve adequately for this purpose. When the elements 12 are moved to the relationship shown in Figure 2, the side members 13 of each element will be in engagement with the pivots or studs 17 of the other element 12, thereby retaining the elements 12 properly disposed to constitute handles for the receptacle 10.
If desired, in lieu of the retainers 18 shown in Figure 6, spring metal clips 20, as shown in Figure 8, may be provided.
From the fore ing it will be apparent that the device 0 the present invention in cludes means in the form of the elements 12 which may be used to provide handles for the receptacle, basket or tray 10 for the purpose of carrying articles of the character mentioned from one point to another; and that the elements 12 may also serve as le s for the receptacle, basket or tray 10 for t e purpose of draining the articles arranged therein. r
By placing the device in a sink articles may be washed quickly and easily and then may be drained and left to dry without the use of the usual drain boards and the like.
What is claimed is:
1. A device'of the class described comprising an article receptacle pervious to liquid, elements connected with sald receptacle for movement in relation thereto, means on the receptacle to be engaged by the elements for disposition of the elements to serve as handles for the receptacle, for the purpose of carrying the receptacle, and means on the receptacle to engage said elements for disposition of the elements to serve as legs to support the receptacle in elevated position for draining purposes.
2. A device of the class described comprising an article receptacle pervious to liquid, elements each pivotally connected with sald receptacle, means on the receptacle to be engaged by the elements for disposition of the elements, to serve as handles for the receptacle, for the purpose of carrying the receptacle, and means on the receptacle to engage said elements for disposition of the elements to serve as legs to support the receptacle in elevated position for draining purposes.
3. A device of the class described comprising an article receptacle pervious to liquid, elements of flexible material connected with said receptacle for movement in relation thereto for disposition to serve as handles for the receptacle, for the purpose of carrying the receptacle, and also for disposition to serve as legs to support the receptacle in elevated position for draining pur oses, and means on the receptacle positione to beengaged by said elements to releasably retain them in the adjusted positions, said means consisting of pairs of studs and pairs of re tamers on opposite sides of the rece tacle.
4. A device of the class describe comprising a basket and U-shaped elements p-ivotally connected respectively near the opposite ends of said basket, said members thus connectedbeing movable to difl'erent positions in relation to the basket to be used optionally as handles for carrying the basket, or as supporting legs therefor, means on the basket to be engaged by said members for disposition to serve as handles, and additional means 5. A device of the class described comprising a basket, studs on said basket, U-shaped elements pivotally connected with said studs, retainers on the basket which co-operate with the side members of said elements to releasably retain said elements disposed in relation to the basket to serve as the legs therefor, said elements being releasable from said retainers to engage said studs for disposition in relation to the basket to serve as handles therefor-c.
6. A device of theclass described comprising a basket, U-shaped elements each consisting of side members and a cross member connecting the side members, said side members being of angular formation, means connecting said elements with said basket for movement in relation thereto, means on the basket to be engaged by said elements for disposition of the elements to serve as handles for the basket, and means on the basket to engage said elements to serve as legs to support the basket in elevated position.
