barren sr TEs THOMAS C. BROWNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PORTABLE SHELF AND BACK DEVICE.
Application fil ed sew-mater 1, 1926, Serial No. 133,541.
This invention relates generally to portable shelf and rack devices, the invention hav ing more partici'llar reference to a novel type of portable shelf and rack device adapted for use when bathing infants and children, and which may be placed in a corner of the room, or collapsed when not in use. The invention has for an object the provision ofa device of the class described embodying improved and novel features of construction and arrangements of parts. 7
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and adavantages thereof, reference will be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawing,
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a front perspective view of my improved device.
' Fig. 2 is a similar view showingthe shelves removed therefrom. I
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. r I
Fig. 1 is a similar view taken on the line 4l4= of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
As here imbodiedmy'improved portable shelf and rack device comprises upright members and 11, hinged as at 12, and provided with upper shelf supports 13 and 14:, of angle shaped construction, adapted to slidably receive the shelf proper 15, which is slidably engaged in the upper shelf supports 13. The shelf proper 15, is provided with three sides, two of which are formed at'rig'ht angles, so asto extend theupright members 1.0 and 11 at right angles, so as to permit my improved device to be'placed in a corner of the room. The front edge of the shelfpropor 15 is preferably formed with a curveature, so as to add to the decorative appearance of my improved device. 7 The upper shelf supports 13 are pivotally attached at their forward ends, as at 16, by a pin, or the like, to the upright members 10 and 11','and are provided withcxtended members 17 ,adapted to engage in apertures 18, formed in the upright members 10 and 11, as a means of sup porting the shelf proper 15, in ahorizontal or declined position, the latter bein such as will prevent articles placed therein from rolling or fall? the floor.
Add lv'es proper 19 and 20, simi shelf are simi lari}? removably attached to the shelf supports 21.
and 22 which are rigidly attached to the upright members 10 and 11, so as to support the said shelves in a horizontal position.
The clips .3 are attached at one extremity, as at 2 1, to the said shelf supports, and are provided with a free extremity 24, bent so as to engage in notches 25 formed in the said shelves proper, so as to hold the said shelves proper in place in the said shelf supports.
The said shelves proper are provided with apertures 26, formed or cut therein, adapted to support an eye'dropper, cylindrical o'onpermit soiled clothes, towels, and the like, to
be placed in the said receptacle.
. A clothes hanger, or towel bars, adapted tosupp ort clothes, towels, wash cloths, and the like, comprising a bar 31 hinged, to the support 33, and extended therefrom, having its extended extremity formed or bent ring shaped, as'at- 32, so as to engage wash basin, wash dish. or the like. The bars 341-, are similarly hinged to the support 83 and eX- tended therefrom. The support 33 is attached to the uprigat member 11, the above described construction being such as will permit the said bars to be extended from the upright member 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, when in use, or folded against the said upright member, when not in use as clearly shown in Fig. 1. i
The rack supports 35. are hinged as at -35, to the upper edges of the upright mem .bers l0 and 11, and extend the entire width.
of the said upright members. The rack pins 86, are attached to the rack supports, and extended'therefrom, and are provided with enlarged extremities 87, of spherical construction, provided with axial apertures 38, or openings. The rack supports 85, are provided with notches 89, so as to permit the rack supports 35 to engage in. the handle elem nt 40,. and rest on or he rted by the haadiabrackets 4:1. and 11' said rack supports 35, are in a horizontal position, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, which Will permit pins, similar miscellaneous articles, and the like, to be placed in the apertures 38, and which Will permit my improved device to be placed compactly in the corner of a room. It being understood, that clothes, and the like, may be hung on the rack pins 36, when the rack supports 35, are in a horizontal. or vertical position, the latter shown in Fig. 1. i
The handle element is of U shaped construction, having parallel extended elements a3 and 44, the extended element fl?) is adapted to slidably engage in the handle bracket ll, attached to the upright member ill, an d is provided with an aperture adapted to receive the 5 ,id extended element 43. The extended 'element le is adapted ,to engage in the locking member l5, through the opening 4 6', when the said locking member is pivotally positioned in the handle bracket 41, so as to have its opening l6 in line with a simi lar opening {l7 formed in the handle bracket ll. The locking member is pivotally, or retatively mountedin an aperture formed in thehandle bracket .41, and is'provided with an extended element 48, handle, orthe like. The latter described constijnction besuch as will removably engage the handie member l0, so'as to permit my improved device to be lifted and carried as may be desired; The extended element as having its extremity,- formed or bent at right angles thereto, as at 49, so as to secure the engagement of the'handle member 40. I
While I have above described, the preferred form, construction and arrangement of the several. elements employed, it will. be understood that the device is nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the inventioiii as claimed,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect ,by Let;- ters Patent Of the United states .is asifol lows: V" T 1. In a device of the class described, an
upright member hinged to a second upright member, said upright members being provided With upper shelf supports adapted to slidably receive a shelf proper, said upper shelf proper being provided With three sides, two of the said sides being formed at right angles, so as to extend the said upright memhere at right angles, said upper shelf supports being pivotally attached to the said upright members, and said upper shelf sup ports being provided with extended mem bers adapted to engage in apertures formed in the said upright members, as a means of holding the upper shelf proper in a horizontal or depressed position.
2. A cabinet comprising vertical side members, hinges attached to adjacent edges of said side members for pivotally connect: ing the lattertogether, shelf supports com,- prising grooved members pivotally meunted atone extremity on said side members near the unattached edges thereof and having an opening in the other extremity thereof, a shelf having edge portions adapted to engage in the grooves of said shelf support,
side members being provided with spaced openings adapted to register with the openings in the ends of said shelf supports, and removable pins adapted to be inserted through the openingsi n" said shelf supports and into any desired openings of said side members for retaining shelf supports and the shelf mounted thereon at a suitable inclination.
' 3. A cabinet comprising vertical side members attached together, along adjacent edges, shelf supports pivotally mounted at their outer ends on said vertical. side'members and having openings in their ether ends, spaced .opr-znirgs in said side members adapted to r ster with the openings of said shelf supports, a shelf mounted. on said shelf supports, and a pin adapter-l to be inserted through the opening in said shelf supponts and. inte the openings of said; side members for retaining said supports and the shelf thereonlat a "desired inclination.
