ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN STOVE-COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS,,IISSOU 'EI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY I RADIANT HEATER Application ,filed ma 12,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in radiant heaters and more particularly to the radiant element therefor, the object being to provide a ra *6 diant heater with a plurality of radiant ele ments arranged side by side, each being provided with a flash opening in each of its sides ha-ving'means for deflecting the flame either right or left so as to obtain an instantaneous flash from one element to the other, thereby providing means for instantaneously ignitingall of the elements irrespective of which element is-initially ignited.
Another object of my invention is to pro- Vide a radiant element with a flash opening in each of its sides, one half of each opening being provided with a deflecting portion so that the flame ofcombustion can be deflected from the burner in either direction,thereby overcoming the difficulties existing in devices of this kind now in use, as no means in prior devices is provided for deflecting the flame to cause an instantaneous flash. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide a radiant element which can be manufactured very cheaply, the flash opening and the deflecting means being formed integral therewith and formed when the element is molded so that when a series of these elements are arranged side by sidewithin the frame of the heater any one of the elements can be ignited, as for example'the right hand element or the left hand element, and when ignited, an instantaneous flash is obtained between the respective elements so as to prevent gas from escaping.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, 1
Figure 1 is a section, partly in elevation, of a portion of a radiant heater constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2- of Figure 1 showing the deflecting elements of the respective flash openings in order to flash in both directions;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3 i Flgure 2;
1930. Serial Nb. 451,723.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view show- Figure 5' is a vertical section through a portion of a series of radiant elements showing in plan view the respective flash opening if and deflectors therefor;
Figure 6 is a plan View in section showin the grille of the front portionof each radiant element in order to illustratethe inclined deflecting portions of the roofs of the flash openings; and j i Figure 7 is a top plan view of a portion of the burner. i V In the drawings 1 indicates a frame of heater, 2 the burner, and 3 the radiant elements which are arranged side by side, the end elements abutting the frame so as to close the flash opening formed in its adjacent side, whereby I am able to manufacture all of the elements identically and thedescription of one will be sufficient for all. The elements are preferably oblong in shape, being formed hollow with a solid back a and a foraminated front 5, which as herein shown is in the form of a grille, the bars of the grille and the in ner face of the back being provided with cone ably formed of refractory material and these radiant elements are disposed over the jet portions 2 of the burner as clearly shown in Figure 1, the jets or burner tips beingarranged in clusters asclearly shown in Figure 7, a burner tip or jet A being arranged at each end of the cluster outside the remaining burner jets so that the gas flowing through these jets will have a tendency to follow the inner faces of the sidewalls of the radiant elements so that when ignited, the flame of combustion can be deflected through the flash I opening as will be hereinafter fully vdescribed.
A flash opening 8 is formed in each of the Side walls of the elements which are adapted to registerwhenthe elements are arranged side by side and half of the roof of each opening is provided with an inwardly extendingdeflecting p rtien and byreterring to Figure 5, which shows a face view of a pair of elements cut longitudinally through the flash opening, it will be found that the roof of each back portion on the right side is provided with a deflector 9 having an inclined face 10 which registers with the inclined wall 11 of the flash opening of the adjacent element.
By referring to Figure 6, which is a plan view of the inner face of the front portion of each element-,it will be found that each of the roofs of the flat portion of the flash opening is provided with a deflecting portion '12 which has an inclined surface registering with the inclined wall 13 of the roofof the flashf opening so that when the element is cast in the form of a hollow rectangular body, the deflecting members are formed in the roof of vthe flash opening, some of which slant to theleftand some of which slant to the right so that when one of the radiant elements is ignited, the flame of combustion traveling up the side walls will be deflected instantaneously into the adjacent radiant element whereby I am able to ignite all of the elements instantaneously irrespective of which of the elements is initially ignited.
By referring to Figure 4,11 have shown the end jet opening of the burner A in position under a portion of a radiant element constructed in accordance with my invention and itwill be seen that as the flame of combustion rises from this jet, it strikes the deflecting element so'that it is deflected to the left into the element arranged to that side. As theelement of the other side has an inclined .de- I fleeting element which is disposed over the other jet opening A of the cluster, when the gas is, ignited and the flame of combustion rises, it strikes the inclined deflecting element so that it is deflected to the right through the flash opening of the adjacent radiant element and it will be seen that .by this construction the elements are constructed exactly alike and can be arranged side by side and when so ar-v ranged a' radiant heater is provided with flash openings having deflecting members which will deflect the flame instantaneously so that any oneof the radiant elements can be initially ignited and the remaining elements will be instantaneously ignited by the flash of combustion, which will travel transversely through the flash openings by being deflected by the inclined deflecting portion. V I
From the'foregoing description it will be seen'that' I have provided a novel form of radiant element which is. formed of refrac- What I claim is:
1. A radiant element for radiant heaters comprising an oblong body having a solid back and solid walls and a foraminated front and an open bottom, each side wall of said element being provided with a flash opening, the upper wall of each opening having portions inclined in opposite directions, one of the inclined walls of each of said openings being extended inwardly intosaid hollow element;
2. A radiant heater comprising a burner having jets arranged in clusters, the end jet of each cluster being arranged beyond the remaining jets and a hollow radiant element disposed over each cluster of said burner having flash openings in its sides provided with inwardly extending deflecting portions disposedover the end jet of each cluster of said burner for deflecting the flame of combustion laterally through said flash openings.
,3. A radiant heater of the kinddescribed comprising a burner, a series of hollow radiant elements disposed above. said burnerand arranged sidevby side, said sides having registeringopenings,said openings of adjoinvmg members provided with upwardly inclined projecting members for deflecting the flame from one radiant element to the other radiant element, for the purpose described.
4. A radiant heater of the kind described comprising-a burner, a series of vertically 7 hereunto affix my signature. V

will flash instantaneously, thereby overcoming the difliculties existing with heaters of this kind now in use.
