IMPROVEMENT lN FRUIT-JARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,067, dated August 15, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, H. D. HALL, of Salem, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenin gs for Jars, 860.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates tofastenings for fruitjars, lager-beer bottles, or other suitable receptacles; and has as its object a cheap and economical construction of parts, which will cause the initial cost of the-article to be as low as possible, and yet will insure a tight air-joint, and such a combination of engagements, respectively, between cap and neck as will prevent any tendency toward access of am With such premise in view, my invention consists in the combination, with a jar formed with a breast or shoulder for the support of a gasketbelow the neck ofthe jar, and the neck ofthe jar provided with three inclined lugs, of a sheet-metal cover and gasket, said cover formed with an outwardly-turned lower edge, and with three elongated inwardly-projecting lugs struck up from the cover, whereby the pressure exerted upon the face of the gasket is maintained by the lugs located in close proximity to said gasket.

but of metallic construction, and having three straight plane inwardly-projecting lugs, b. These latter are of length and dimension suitable to the inclines, and readily capable of connection therewith.

They are preferably struck up from the metal cap, but may be swaged, spun, or in any manner formed. The ordinary processes immediately aboveindicated are so well known in the art that it is unnecessary to further detail the same. But while I preferably manufacture my jar-cap of copper, I do not confine myself thereto, but may use any and all appropriate metals.

0 is the gasket or packing, of any suitable elastic property, and is located upon the shoulder at the base of the neck of the jar, Whereon it finds secure bearing under the inclined-plane pressure of the cap as the latter is clamped on the jar.

The operation of the foregoing is at once seen, and is as follows: These three indentations in the side of the metal cap, thereby making corresponding projections on the inner side of said cap, are arranged so as to slide under the outwardly-projecting inclines on the neck of the jar or bottle, which latter are cast as a part thereof. These lugs on the necks of bottles incline downward, and as the projection on inner side of metal cap slides under the inclined lugs on necks ot' jars or bottles, the cap is pressed down on a gum gasket or shoulder of jars or bottles, thereby making a reliable air-tight joint.

The great advantage that my invention has over any other fastenings on jars or bottles is, it is so easily managed, quick in its working, not liable to get out of order, and is more certain, and can be made cheaper than any other good jar or bottle fastener in use; in a word, its merits consist in its simplicity, economy, and being efi'ective and entirely reliable.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the jar A, having a shoulder or breast for supporting the gasket below the neck of the jar, and the neck of the jar formed with three inclined lugs, 11, of the sheet-metal cover B and gasket 0, said cover provided with three elongated inwardly-projecting lugs, and an outwardly-flaring lower edge, to engage, respectively, with the neck and the gasket of the jar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
