WALTER, or wABAsH, INDIANA-,AssIG oR To 3; WALTER. a commnmgix INC, on WABASH.INTDIANA,A coRronnTIoN-onnvn mm 1 p H INGnl 4 Application filed July 30,
In that type of extension tableswherein an extension leaf may be stored beneath the main top sections, it is common to make the extension leaf in two section's'hinged together 6 andhaving a combined length equal to the width of the table top. 2 In such a construe-f tion it has been found diflicult to maintain the adjacent ends ofthe two hinged sections in the same plane when the sections are-ex tended and subjected to aload.
, The object of my inventionls to produce a sheet metal hinge of cheap but effective I form and of such character as to insure proper alinement of the adjacent edgesof the hing ed leaf sections when said sections are extended. The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. Fig. 1 is an end elevation hinge in leaf-folding position, with portions of the leaves shown in section; I
Fig. 2, a similar view in open position;
Fig. 3, a side elevation of the opened hinge with a leaf section in transverse section;- Fig. 1 a framentary under plan of one side 5 of the hinge and adjacent leaf-sections;
- Fig. 5 a fragmentary top plan, in partial section of, one end of the hinge; and
'Fig. 6 a section'on line'66 of Fig. 5.
Inthe drawings 10, 10 indicate identical strips of metal of desiredzlength with its ends turned up to form ears 11 and 12 of equal length, Ear .11 is perforated at. two points 13,13 and ear 12 is similarly perforated at "15, 15 but the metal immediately j I ranged sheet; metal stripsyof equal length,
around these perforations is struck up to form bosses16, 16 of a height equal to the. thickness of the connecting levers,t0 be described. At one side edge car 11 is provided with a ,notch, 17 and the corresponding side 9 edge; of car 12 is provided with-a tongue 18 so formed and placed as to wedge tightly V V I tions thereof-and pivotally connected with companion levers, said levers having thick- 7 i into the notch 17 -ofa companion strip. s
7 Two strips 10, 1O reversed with relation to each other sothat car 11 of one lies.,ad-'
ijacent an ear 12 of the other, are connected at each end by two pairs'of L 'shaped levers 20, 21 and 20, 21. The toes of one lever 20 and one lever 21 are pivotallyriveted to the outer face of each car 11 with their shanks inclined toward the companion hinge strips two pairs of levers 20, 21' are pivotall'y: conofmy improved thehinge. j
of the strip. k I
direction and the ends :of the shanks of the and similarly the toes of another lever 20'and i another lever'211arepivotally riveted to the f adjacent ear 12,of the companionfhinge member with their shanks inclined in theopposite nected :and the, shanks of the-two .le'vers '21 flare pivotallyconnected on anaxis' which will be ina-plane midway between adjacent edges 6f the twomembers 10, 10 when they are in the relation shown in Fig.6. i
By providing the bosseslo'theparts will "assemble with 'adjacent ears ll'and 12 in the same'plane so that a tongue 18 and a notch Y 17 will properly c'oact, Screwho-les 25, in
the main strips 10 mynso be formed sym-- E metrically with relation to the; cars 13 and 1 1 and yet be in alinement with the similar perforationsof the companion platewhen the parts' are assembled, sothat there will be no 'difliculty. in- 'pre-forming screw holes inthe leaf sections: preparatory to mounting When thefhinge partslhave been properly assembled as shown, andsecured to "the leaf sections 26, 26, an unfolding of the leaf sections projects the two tongues 18 firmly into the adjacent notches 17 and, as the fastening screws27 are placedclose tothe planes of the ears, the adjacent edges of the leaves are brought into and held in aproper relation to each-other. V j a o I claim as my invention: r
' 1. A hinge comprising two reverselyj ar the ends of whichare upturned and perforated, the metal around the perforations of only one upturned portionof each strip-be ing extended laterally of the portion, two pairs of levers pivotally associated with the adjacent upturned portion at the perforainc 2. A hinge comprising two reversely arranged similar sheet metal strips of equal length, the ends of which are upturned and perforated, the material around the perforations of only one upturned portion of each strip extending laterally ofvthe portion, and twopairs' of levers p'ivotsilly associated with the adjacent upturned portions at the perforations thereof and pivotally connected with companion Elevers, said i'levers having thickness substantiallyrequali'to. said ilaterahextensions, the intermediate portions of each of said strips being provided with two perforations for the reception of fasteninghmeans, said perforations being symmetrically arranged relative to -.the intermediate portions of the strips andithe adjacent vertical edges ofiadjacent upturned portions being formed one with a notch and the'other with amating tongue which interdigitate laterally of the hinge axis when-the parts are THOVBCltO open position.
3.1.A,hinge comprising two :main "body strips of equal length with .upturnedears at each end, two pairs of pivotally associated 'levers hingedly connecting said strips with the adjacentears there-of inithe'same plane,
one set of the leversbeingspacedfrom the upturned ends ofone of. said stripsa distance siibstantially equal to .the thickness of one -lever'inein'ber the adjacent vertical edges-0f adjacent strip ends having -portions 'which interdigitate transversely and to one side of the axis oif'thelhinge,
