Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB MQDAVIES, OF ENON VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
I I VIPROVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-COWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,050, dated August 15, 1876; application filed June 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JACOB M. DAVIES, of Enon Valley, Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Chimney- Oowl, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of the pipe-elbow, which is fitted to turn on a spindle on the top of the chimney, constructed with that portion through which the smoke escapes in a form calculated to be equally as efficient as the hood or funnel commonly used to facilitate the discharge of the smoke, and to be less liable to catch the wind, when contrary and shifting gusts prevail, and conduct it down the chimney into the room, which is so common with the others.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved cowl, taken on line a; x, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken on line yy, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the vertical part, and B the horizontal part, of the elbow, which is mounted on the chimney-top G by the spindle D, so as to turn about as the wind shifts, for turning the exit portion E in the way the wind blows. This portion E I propose to make oblong in transverse section, as shown, instead of the funnel shape commonly employed, which I find in practice to be much less liable to catch the wind when it suddenly blows from the contrary direction, and quicker and more certain to shift with the wind, thus avoiding the blowing ot'gusts down the chimney, to which the common cowls are subject.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A rotary cowl, consisting of vertical pipe A, horizontal pipe B, and oblong tube E, the latter serving both as a vane and a discharge pipe, in the manner specified.
JACOB M. DAVIES.
