ed, and on. which the overhanging armv with 10 the actuated parts therein is mounted.'
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting bed structure of the above type wherein the sides of the bed structure extend upwardly to substantially the plane of the cloth plate and the ends of the bed structure are substantially open for the purpose of permitting the assembling of the parts and for giving access to the stitch forming elements beneath the cloth plate.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional View through the 1mproved supporting bed structure with all parts removed therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig 1.
YFig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 3o ofFig. 1.
Fig.' 4 is a vertical sectional view longltudinally through the supporting bed vand also through the overhanging arm mounted thereon.
The invention relates to a sewing machine and more particularly to the supporting bed structure which is preferably cast in one piece. Said bed structure includes a bottom portion from which rise integral side walls. The side walls and bottom portion make up a frame' structure which is substantially U- all mounted within this supporting bed struc- A ture'. The supporting bed structure is substan'tinlly open at both ends as well as at the top and this permits the assembling of the parts. Detachably mounted on this supporting bed structure is an overhanging arm carrying a needle bar and means for actualting the needle bar. These parts are actuated by suitable connection with the actuating Shaft in the supporting bed structure.
Referring more in detail to the drawings: The supporting bed structure includes a body portion 1 having a bottom portion 2 extending from front to rear of the machine. Extending upwardly from the bottom portion are two side walls 3 and 4. These side walls are formed integral with the bottom portion. As a matter of fact, the entire bed structure is one integral cast-structure. As
clearly shown in Fig 2, the bed structure is U-shaped in cross section with the upper part open. There is a cross partition 5 having a bearing 6 formed therein. The right hand end of the bed structure as viewed in Fig. 1 is partially closed by a cross partition 6awhich is formed with a large circular opening 7.
The main actuating shaft is indicated at 8. This main actuating shaft is provided with a crank 9 and with suitable devices for operating the looper mechanism and the feeding mechanism. The opening 7 in the bed structure is of Sufficient size to permit the shaft 8 with *the eccentric member thereon lto be inserted v therethrough. A bearing sleeve 10 closes the circular opening 7 and forms a very durablesupporting bearing for the shaft 8.
The shaft 8 is driven by a. suitable belt wheel 11.- The looper is indicated at 12. The end of the supporting bed adjacent the looper 12 is closed 'by a detachable cover f plate 13. The throat plate of the machine is secured to the bed as indicated at 14. The fabric rests on this throat plate while it is being stitched. Working through the throat late is a feed dog 15 which is operated for ceding the material transversely across the, supporting bed. This throat plate 14 is directly mounted on the supporting bed. The supporting bed is closed in part by a coverv ciprocates in the free plate 16 which' is provided with a leaf spring 17 adapted t'o extend beneath the throat plate and a latch bolt 18 which evenly engages the recess 19 in the supporting bed.
' Mounted on the supporting bed is an overhanging arm 20. The needle bar 2l reend of the overhanging arm and carries a needle 22. .The needle bar is reciprocated by a needle lever 23 which is operated by a link 24 cooperating with the crank 9 in the main actuating shaft.- The lever 23 is pivoted intermediate its ends as indicated at 25. This overhanging arm is detacliably secured to the supporting bed by screws 26. r
All the parts may be assembled in the overhanging arm and it may then be attached to the supporting bed. Access to the screws can be had through the removable cover plate 27. The attaching of the overhanging arm to the supporting lied accomplishes the closing of the upper portion of the supportin bed.
rom the above it will be apparent that I have provided a very durable supporting bed in which the actuated parts beneath the cloth plate are housed and supported. The actuatlng shaft is also located in this supportingbed which is one integral structure and which is comparatively free from vibration. The parts maybe readily assembled in this supporting bed and by the placing of the cover plates the parts are all substantially housed and yet readily accessible.
The overhanging arm, as noted above, may have its parts assembled therein after which it is attached to the supporting bed. Inas'- much as the overhanging arm 1s readily det'achable, other overhanging arms may be substituted therefor and thus vsewing machines having different characteristics built on the same supporting bed. The overhanging arm is attached directly to the supportwith the eccentric member thereon to be inserted therethrough, a sleeve for closing said opening and having a bearing for said shaft, and a cover plate for closing the other end of said supporting bed.
In testimony whereof, I a'lix m signature.
FRIEDRIC I LUTZ.
ing bed and this forms a very durable support for the overhanging arm.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having fully described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A machine including a supporting bed structure havin integral side Walls with Q itsends'substantia ly open, a throat plate mountedjat one end of said bed structure, an overhanging arm mounted `at the other end of said bed structure, a cover plate between the throat plate and the overhanging arm, a main actuating shaft located in said sup porting bed and having an eccentric member mounted thereon, said opening in the bed structure adjacent the overhanging arm being of suicient size to permit the shaft
