This invention relates*to'improvements in a metallic leaf applying device andthe packe age roll therefor; and has for its object to provide in such a device a shaft Von which c the package roll isinounted and to provide the core of this roll with one or more openings to be engaged by a drive member fixed on the shaft by means of which the roll is' caused to be driven in time with the shaft. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will'be more fully described, aiid particularly pointedout in thel appended claim.

On this shaft is fixed a driveplate 16 by a set screw 17 the plate having a laterally-extending drive pin 18 for the purpose presently described. On this shaft is loosely mounted a package roll of metallic leaf, which roll comprises a core 20 of wood, or other suitable material, on which is wound a length of backing paper carrying the usual layer of metallic leaf such as gold leaf, see Fig. 7
It is found in practice necessary to provide some practica-l means by which this roll may be caused to be rotated with this shaft and at the salme time to be readily detached therefrom when desired, and to accomplish this result in a simple and practical way, I have herein shown one simple construction which is that of providing one or more openings 21 in the package roll core to receive the pin 1S in the drive plate 16 and in order to yielda'bly press this drive pin into the selected opening, Ilia-ve provided a flat spring Q2 having one end fixed to one of the plates 15 and its free end engaging the 'face of the package roll core opposite to that face vha ving the drive pin receiving holes, whereby when it is desired to rotate this roll 19 independently of the shaft to take up the slack of the backing strip, or
for any other purpose it is only necessary to slide the roll sideways on its shaft against its spring tension and after rotating thesame on its shaft the desired amount2 it is released causing the pin 18 to engage another' of the several holes 21 in the core and the adjustment is completed.
In the forward ends of these plates 15 the deposit roll 23 is piif'ot-ally mounted and about which the backing strip Q4 carrying its metals lic leaf 25, see Fig. 7, is led a-ndwound from the Vpackage roll 19 in the usual way.
By the use of my improved construction the package roll is mounted to be driven by the shaft 1-2 Aa'nd'yet may be readily detached therefrom when desired for adjustment. Thus, considering Figure 6, when the roll of gold leaf is moved from position Ato position B, there will be waste of gold leaf when again applying the rollr to a book. The improved keying of the package rolls to the actuating shafts permits positive backward rotation of the package rolls, and the plurality of recesses facilitates positioning and adjustment.
The foregoing description is directed solely7 towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the priv ilege of Aresorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only 'j by the terms ofthe appended claim,
