HORN CONTAINER FOR PACKING AND S HIPPING FRESH FRUIT Filed July 28', 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Allorney Patented .i'une 9, 1931 UNITED" STATES PATENT OFFICE CLARENCE J. HORN, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO GLROWERS SERVICE COM- PANY, 0F FRESNO, CALIFORNIA CONTAINER FOR PACKING -AND' SHIPPING FRESH FRUIT Application filed July 28, 1930. Serial No. 471,275.
The present invention relates to a contain--- or for fresh fruit, and especially grapes, and may be constructed of the usual size of lug used for such purposes but with variations which have the advantage of allowing the fruit to be displayed to the best advantage, and still provide a sturdy container for the fruit.
In the drawings: 7 I Figure l is a perspective View of a container embodying the features my invention,
Figure 2 is atop plan View thereof, Figure 3 is an end elevation thereof, Figure 4 is a side elevation thereof, and Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig ure 2.
Referring to'the drawings in detail it will be seen that numerals 5 denote a pair of end panels while numerals 6 denote a pair of side panels. The end panels are shorter than the side panels in height. The side panels 6 are nailed or otherwise fastened to the ends of the end panels 5 so that the bottom edges of the panels 5 and 6 are flush. Bottom panels 7 are nailed to the bottom edges of the end panels 5. Notches 8 are sawed in the upper corners of the end. panels 5. Longitudinal slots 9 are sawed in the upper portions of the sides 6 to extend inwardly from the ends thereof and terminate a distance from the center thereof. End panel sections 10 arethen nailed to the upper edges of the end panels 5 and between the upper end portions of the side panels 6 so that the upper edges of the sections 10 are flush with the upperedges of the side panels 6.
The advantage of constructing the box in this way is that the same is stronger by reason of the one piece side and also it requires less time to make than a box with a two piece side.
The slots 8 and 9 are preferably formed in the box, by sawingor otherwise, after the parts are placed together "and the slots 8 provide openings for a screw driver or other tool whereby the end pieces 10 can be pried from the pieces 5 and during this operation the upper portions of the ends of the sides 6 will split between the inner ends of the slots 9 so that the upper portion of the box can be readily removed.
it is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without moredetailed description thereof.
lt is apparent that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the in ent-ion as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new is:
A box of the class described comprising a pair of side panels, a pair of end panels secured to the side panels, said end panels being shorter in height than the side panels, panel sect1ons secured to the upper edges of the end panels terminating. flush wlth the upper edges of the side panels and disposed therebetween, said side panels being formed with longitudinally extending slots starting from the ends thereof and terminating distances from the center thereof, and said end panels being provided with notchesin their upper end corners registering with the slots the upper walls of the notches in the end panels being formed by the lower edges of r the panel sections.
In testimony whereof I my signature. l
CLAREN J. *HOBN.
