UNlTE stars MAX WEBER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FILLER CON$TRUCTION.
Application filed June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,003.
My invention relates to filler constructions, especially adapted for use in crates, cartons, boxes and the like, and the invention has for its primary object the provision of an improved filler construction which will be economical in manufacture and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. 1
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a filler construction made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a strip member formed with. an extension thereon constitutins a folded oleat;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a strip member which is made without the extension; and
Fig. 4 represents a cross section taken sub stantially on the line 44- of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, the reference numerals 5 and 6 denote strip members. arranged in intersecting series and held together by passing' the solid portions 7 of the members of each series through the slots 8 of the members constituting the intersectingseries. all in an ordinary manner. The pocketed structure resulting from this intersectingarrangement of the strip members may be said for the purpose of identifying and locating the parts, to have parallel sides, herein represented in general by A, and parallel ends, herein represented in general by B.
Preferably and as shown, two of the parallel strips 5, being the second of the strips inward from the ends B, are made throughout their length with extensions which are bent at right angles along the lines 9 and are subsequently bent upon lines 10 in order to produce the re-enforcing double bottom cleats 11, it being observed that these cleats 11, thus formed, are of such extent that the lines .10 represent corners at opposite ends of the structure.
In a similar manner, two of the intersecting strips 6, being preferably the second strips inward from each side A of the structure, are formed with extensions bent at right angles along lines 12 and then folded along corner lines 13 in order to produce reenforcing double top cleats 14. The cleats 11 and 14; thus formed from the intersecting" strips 5 and 6, respectively, extend in planes at rightangzles to each other thereby effec tively re-enforcing the structure in a very simple and practical manner. Between the bottom cleats 11 I removably fit a bottom plate 15 and similarly between the top cleats let I fit a plate 16, said removable plates 15 and 16 completing the filler construction and serving as closure members for the containing pockets 17 formed by the intersecting strips. As will be seen in Fig. 1 the plate 16 is of double thickness and flush with the reinforcing cleats.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without depart-- ing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A filler of the character described comprising intersecting strip members arranged to constitute a structure having sides and ends, extensions formed on the second of the strip members inward from the sides at the top, said extensions being bent at the sides and folded over to form re-enforeing cleats of double thickness and extending along the sides, extensions formed on the second of the strip members inward from the ends at the bottom, said extensions being bent at the ends and folded over to form re-enforcing; cleats of double thickness and extending along the ends, a removable plate member at the top fit-ting between the inner ends of the said folded over ire-enforcing cleats, said removable plate member being of double thickness so as to be flush with the first mentioned re-enforicnn' cleats,- and a removable plate member at the bottom fitting between the folds of the said re-enforcing cleats.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
MAX WEBER.
