Patented Apr. 18, 1944 UNITE STAT E i A iiifi'i' FFICE PORTABLE INDUSTRIAL SKID Application May 31, 1943, Serial No. 489,205
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in portable industrial skids comprising a platform having transverse floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the end portions of the respective floorboards and having legs underlying and secured to the end portions of the bolsters of sufficient length to permit the introduction of a lifting truck, or the lifting member or members of a portable stacker therebeneath.
Usual skids of this type have thick floorboards and bolsters and are permanently assembled the factory and when shipped require consid erable space in the car or other vehicle in which they are transported.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a knock-down industrial skid which can readily be assembled at its destination or place of use by unskilled labor and without the use of special tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide an industrial skid of this type which will permit the use of less thick lumber most easily to procure when there is a scarcity without substan tially detracting from the strength or rigidity of the skid.
More specifically the object of the invention is to provide a knock-down industrial skid comprising a platform having transverse floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the end portions of the floorboards, legs adapted to be detachably secured to the bolsters and provided with vertical slots and independent girders having end portions adapted to fit and to be inserted into said slots and to engage the under surfaces of the respective bolsters and thereby reinforce the bolsters and the floorboards mounted upon them.
These and other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the fol-- lowing description and the accompanying drawing and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a skid embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged illustrative view of a corner portion of the skid, viewed partially from beneath to illustrate more clearly the manner in which the ends of the girder are mounted in the legs and engage the under surface of the bolsters intermediate of the legs.
The skid comprises a plurality of floorboards l, which may abut at their edges, or provided with interengaged edge tongue and groove connections and bolsters 2 and 3 underlying and secured to the floorboards by suitable fastenings such as screws d. The ends of each of the bolsters are supported upon preferably U-shaped legs having downwardly and inwardly inclined walls 5 and G united by integral substantially flat feet sections 1. Each of the Walls 5 and 6 is provided centrally of its width with vertically wide relatively narrow slots 8 and 9 and the upper ends of the walls 6 are respectively provided with horizontal flanges l0 and II adapted to be secured to the bolster by bolts l2 and 13. The bolts 92 and it may also if desired pass through the end floorboards of the platform. The walls 5 and 6 of the legs desirably, but not necessarilyv are provided with laterally extending horizontal ledges id and IE to form a seat for the under edges of the reinforcing girder. Reinforcing girders l6 underlie and extend longitudinally of the respective bolsters and have upper edge surfaces i'l which engage the under faces of the respective bolsters.
The girders desirably are of wood and of a thickness equal to the width of the slots 8 and 9 in the respective legs and the upper edge of the girder is cut away sufliciently to enable the end portion !8 thereof to pass through and fit theslots 8 and 9 in the legs and to present shoulders is engaging or in close proximity to the inner ends of the inwardly extending flanges ll of the egs.
By reason of this construction the legs and girders may be constructed without assemblage at the factory and the girders placed within the area between the bolsters of the platform and the U-shaped legs nested within one another to occupy a minimum space.
Upon reaching the destination the user can readily assembl the skid by sliding the slotted legs upon the reduced end portions 18 of the girders and then securing the legs to the bolsters and end floorboards by inserting the bolts l2 and it through the holes prepared for them and tightening up the nuts upon the bolts.
When thus assembled the lower edges of the girders engage the bottom Walls of the slots in the legs or the ledges extending from the lower ends of the slots, while the upper edges of the girders underlie and engage the bolsters between and preferably throughout the distance between the inwardly extending flanges of the respective legs. Longitudinal movement of the girders is prevented by the shoulders at the inner ends of the reduced end portions of the girders thereby preventing longitudinal movement after the skid has been assembled.
By reason of this reinforced construction 1" floorboards of 34 thickness when finished may be employed as may also bolsters of the same thickness. The girders may also be boards of similar thickness and of such suitable width as effectively to reinforce the bolsters and floorboards and produce a skid of equal or greater strength and rigidity than skids heretofore made of thicker and heavier Wooden construction.
It will be understood that the particular dimensions of the materials used and the special form of the parts herein described may be varied in accordance with the uses to which the skid is to be employed and that the construction shown and described herein is of an illustrative character and not restrictive of the meaning and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A knockdown portable skid comprising a platform having transverse floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the respective end portions of the floorboards, legs mounted on the respective bolsters in proximity to the ends there of having girder-receiving recesses and reinforcing girders having end portions insertable into and fitting said recesses supported by said legs and having portions intermediate of said legs engaging the under surfaces of the respective bolsters.
2. A knockdown portable skid comprising a platform having transverse wooden floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the respective end portions of the floorboards, U-shaped legs detachably mounted upon the end portions of the respective bolsters and provided with vertically wide relatively narrow slots in the downwardly extending walls of said legs, wide relatively thin vertical girders extending longitudinally of the respective bolsters having end portions extending through and fitting said slots, and upper edge portions of said girders intermediate of said legs continuously engaging the under surfaces of the respective bolsters.
3. A knockdown portable skid comprising a platform having transverse wooden floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the respective end portions of the floorboards, U-shaped legs detachably mounted upon the end portions of the respective bolsters and provided with vertically wide relatively narrow slots in the downwardly extending walls of said legs, with ledges extending horizontally from said walls at the bottom of said slots, wide relatively thin Vertical girders extending longitudinally of the respective bolsters having end portions extending through and fitting said slots, and resting upon said ledges, and upper edge portions intermediate of said legs continuously engaging the under surfaces of the respective bolsters;
4. A knockdown portable skid comprising a platform having transverse wooden floorboards, bolsters underlying and secured to the respective end portions of the floorboards, U-shaped legs having at their upper ends horizontally extending flanges bolted to the end portions of the respective bolsters, the downwardly extending walls of said legs having vertically wide relatively narrow slots, wide relatively thin vertical girders having their edge portions effectively engaging the under surfaces of said bolsters throughout the distance between the flanges of the legs and having relatively narrower end portions fitting within and extending through the slots in the walls of said legs, with the upper end portions thereof notched to provide shoulders adjacent the inwardly extending flanges of the respective legs for preventing longitudinal displacement of the girders.
