HIGHWAY ADVERTISING SIGN Filed July 18, 1930 -2 Sheets-Sheei 2 Win SW} Patented June 2, 1931 V EARL W. SUDDUTH, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA HIGHWAY ADVERTISING SIGN Application filed July 18, 1930. Serial No. 468,834, l
' carry suitable finials 27.
This invention relates to highway display signs. An object of the invention is to provide a display sign which may be mounted across the highway in order to be in good view to the traveling public.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference numerals indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the sign as mounted over the roadway,
Figure 2, a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3, a view in elevation of the hinge for mounting one of the signs on its support, and
Figure 4, a section on line 4 l of Figure 3.
In the drawings numeral 10 indicates one of several angle irons forming the posts upon which the signs are mounted, these angle irons being tied together by braces 11 clamped at their intersections by plates 12. The posts Connecting the posts on the opposite sides of the road is a beam 13 which preferably is made up of a plurality of sections to form in cross section a V-shaped beam as shown in Figure 2. The beam 13 preferably consists of plates or beams 14- and side beams 15 held together by lattice work 16, the whole forming a reenforced supporting beam which though relatively light in weight will have considerable strength. Mounted upon the cross beam 13 is a frame 17 within which may preferably be secured a wire fabric 18 upon which any suitable display sign may be placed, such, for example, as 'Welcome to our city. The frame 17 may be held upon the beam 13 by angle irons 19 which may be suitably ornamented as shown at 20. The top of the frame 17 also may carry ornamental or artistic designs, such as 21. Plates 22 are swung from the lower portion of the V-shaped beam 15 by means of hinges 23. The details of the hinges are shown in Figures 3 and 4, such hinges consisting of straps 24: which are suitably secured, as by rivets, to the sides of the beams 15, and are perforated in their lower ends to receive bolts 25 which connect them to corresponding straps 26 on the upper sides of the plates 22. The purpose of the hinges, of course, is to permit the plates to swing slightly to relieve wind resistance upon them and also to attract the attention of the travelers. The plates 22 will carry suitable advertisements.
One of the posts, preferably that on the right side of the road, may carry suitable plates 28 upon which road markers may be placed. On the inside of the post parallel with the road may be placed suitable information boards 29. 7
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention and I therefore do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A highway display device comprising posts positioned at opposite sides of the highway said posts being made up of a plurality of angle beams secured together and reenforced by a network of connecting straps to form a light but rigid post, a beam connecting the tops of said posts across the highway said beam being formed of angle irons connected together by supporting straps the whole being V-shaped in cross section, and a plurality of plates hinged to the lower side of said cross beams said plates being adapted to carry display signs, substantially as set forth.
2. A highway display device comprising posts positioned at opposite sides of the high way, a rigid metal beam secured between said posts above the highway, said beam being formed of a plurality of plates and beams and being substantially triangular in cross-section, the base of said triangular cross-section forming the upper side of said beam, a plate mounted on said upper side of said beam and hinged plates secured to the lower side of said beam, said plates being adapted to carry advertising signs, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Washin on, District of Columbia, this 17th day of uly, A. D. nineteen hundred and thirty.
EARL W. SUDDUTH.
