Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a latch case plate that is preferably secured to the inner side of a door and is provided at one edge with a laterally extending flange 2 that is secured to the outer edge of the door. Slidably mounted on the case plate 1 is a bolt 3 having a flat shank A and an enlarged head 5. As shown, the head 5 extends through a suitable opening 6 in the lateral flange 2 of the case plate and is adapted to engage asuitable keeper (not shown) upon the door jamb of the vehicle body, while the shank 4 extends between spaced guide lugs 7 struckout from the case plate 1 and is provided at spaced points throughout its length with an upstanding eX- tension 8 and a lateral projection or lug 9. As shown, this shank is adapted to move behind a suitable cover plate 10 and is normally held in projected position by means of a helical spring 11 anchored on the case plate.
For retracting the bolt against the tension of the spring 11 I preferably provide a suit able roll-back 12 that isadapted to be operated from the outside of the door, and a vertical spindle 13 that is adapted to be operated from the inside of the door. As shown, the roll-back 12 is engageable with the forward extension 8 of the bolt shank and is provided with a hub 14 that is journaled in aligned openings in the case plate and cover plate, preferably immediately in rear of the lateral flange 2. Any suitable means (not shown) may be engaged with the square opening 15 in the hub 14 for rocking the roll- 7 back against the extension 8 to retract the bolt. The spindle 13 is preferably ournaled on the case plate 1 between spaced struckout bearings 16 and is provided intermediate its ends with a suitable crank portion 17 that is 1 adapted to be engaged with the lug 9 for retracting the bolt.
Thus, with this construction, the rail-back 12 may be-moved to the rear against the extension 8 to retract the bolt without effecting the spindle 18, likewise the latter may in turn be rotated so that the crank portion 17 thereof will be engaged with the lug 9 toretract the bolt without effecting the roll-back. The spring 11 will always exert a pressure through the lateral projection 9 of the bolt shank against the crank portion 17 of the spindle to hold the latter in operative position, however a supplemental coil spring 19 is preferably provided at the upper edge of the case plate to prevent any objectionable play of the spindle and to take care of any rattling thereof in the bearings 16. As shown, this spring 19 is preferably coiled about the spindle 13' and is terminally secured to the spindle and case plate, so that the spindle will always be held snugly in the bearings 16. In order that the outside operating means may be rendered inoperative from the inside of the vehicle, I preferably provide a dog 20 that is pivoted upon the case plate 1 between the spindle 13 and roll-back 12 and is adapted to engage a lateral portion 21 of the roll-back 12 to prevent the latter from retracting the bolt. lVith the presentinvention the dog 20 is moved into the path of the lateral projection 21 of the roll-back by means of an actuating. arm 22 that is preferably pivoted at its rear end upon the case plate and is pivoted at its opposite or forward end to the dog 20. In order that the dog 20 may be rendered effective by the manipulation of the inside retracting means the spindle 13 is mounted for rectilinear movement in the bearings 16 and the actuating arm 22 is preferably provided with a longitudinally extending slot 23 that receives a ring or washer illrigidlyauraliioihupiullc'13ubouiln crank portion 17. Thus with this construction, the spindle 13 may be pressed down wardly by means of a suitable handle (not shown) so that the washer 24; will swing downwardly the arm 22 which in turn will lower the dog 20 in rear of the lateral projection 21 of the roll-back 12.
In order that the dog 20 may be rendered ineffective automatically upon the rotation of the spindle 13 to retract the belt, I preferably mount upon the pivot 25 connecting the arm 22 to the dog 20, a suitable roller 26 that is adapted to travel upwardly along the upper edge or" the extension 8 when the bolt is retracted. Hence, the curved upper edge of the extension 8 will serve as a cam for the roller 26 and will cause the dog 20 to be raised out of the path of the shoulder 21 of the rollback when the bolt is retracted (see Figure 5). This upward movement of the dog 20 will cause the arm 22 to move upwardly and to simultaneously lift the spindle 13, to normal or neutral position as shown in Figure 1 oi the crawing.
If desired the dog 20 may be rendered inettfective by the manipulation of the spindle 13. This may be accomplished by merely lifting the spindle 13 by its handle from the lowered position shown in Figure 4 t0 the raised position shown in Figure 1.
From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that the spindle 13 may be operated in either raised or lowered position to retract the bolt. When the spindle is lowered to actuate the dog the washer 24 will engage the rounded projection 26 at the lower edge of the slot 23 in the dog actuatin arm 22. On the other hand when the spindie 13 is raised by manipulation of its handle the washer 24 will engage the rounded projection 27 at the upper edge 01": the slot in the dog actuating arm 22. hen the dog 20 is raised automatically by engagement of the shank extension 8 with the roller 25, the pro jection 26 at the lower edge of the slot 23 in the arm 22 will engage the washer 24-. on the spindle 13 and will raise the latter to normal position. Inasmuch as the arm 22 is mounted upon a fixed pivot 28 and the dog 20 is limited in its upward movement by the engagement of the rearward extension 29 with the upper case plate bearing 16. it will be apparent that the slotted connection between the arm 22 and the spindle 13 will necessarily limit the rectilinear movement of the spindl'. If desired, the spindle 13 may be do tachably held in raised position by means of a suitable leaf spring 30. As shown, this spring 30 is preferably anchored upon the back of the cl se plate 1 and is provided at its lower end with a returnbent inwardly projecting finger 81 that is engageable with an annular recess 32 in the spindle 13 adjacent to the lower end thereof.

What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear and rotary movement, means for rendering the first member inoperative including a pivoted dog engageable with said first member, and a pivoted arm for actuating said dog controlled and rendered effective by the manipulation of the second mentioned retracting member.
2. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member comprising a spindle mounted for rectilinear and rotary movement, and means for dogging the first member rendered effective by a rectilinear movement of the spindle, and rendered ineffective by a rotary movement of the second member.
In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, means for rendering the first member inoperative including a dog engageable with said first member, and actuating means for said dog including a swinging member controlled. and rendered eii'ective by the manipulation of the last mentioned member.
4. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, and means for dogging said member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear and rotary movement, means for actuating the dogging means rendered efiective or ineffective by the manipulation of the second member, and means adapted to be engaged by said actuating means for automatically moving the second member to neutral position when said actuating means is rendered ineffective.
9. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rotary and recti linear movement,means for dogging said first member, means for actuating said dogging means rendered eflt'eotive by a rectilinear movement of the second member, and means carried by the second member adapted to be engaged by said actuating means for automatically moving the second member to neutral position when the said second member is rotated.
10. In a latch, the combination with a bolt, a bolt retracting member, and means for dogging said member, of a second bolt retracting member, means for actuating the dogging means rendered effective by the manipulation of said second member, and means adapted to be engaged by the actuating means for automatically moving the second member to neutral position when the latter is operated to retract the bolt.
11. In a latch, the combination with a bolt, a bolt retracting. member, and means for dogging said member, of a rotatable bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, means for actuating the dogging means rendered effective by rectilinear movement of said second member, and means carried by the secondmember adapted to be engaged by the actuating means for automatically returning the second member to neutral postion when the latter is rotated.
12. A latch including a bolt having an upstanding projection, a bolt retracting member engageable with said projection, a dog engageable with said member to render the same inoperative, a second bolt retracting member, and means for actuating said dog including an .arm operatively connected to the second member, and a connection between said arm and dog adapted tobe engaged by the upstanding projection.
13. In a latch,'the combination with two bolt retracting members, and a dog for rendering one of said members inoperative, of actuating means for the dogincluding a part carried by the other member, and a pivoted arm connected to the dog and having a slot intermediate its ends receiving said part.
14. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear and rotary movement,1neans for rendering the first member inoperative including a pivoted dog engageable with said first member, and a movably mounted member for actuating said dog controlled and rendered effective by the manipulation of the second mentioned retracting member.
15. In a latch, the combination with a bolt retracting member, of a second bolt retracting member mounted for rectilinear movement, means for rendering the first member inoperative including a dog engageable with said first member, and means for holding said dog in operative position, said last mentioned means including a swinging member controlled and rendered effective by the manipulation of the last mentioned member.
16. In a latch, the combination with two separate bolt retracting members, of means for rendering one of said members inoperative by the movement of the other member including a dog engageable with one member, and means for holding said dog in operative position, said last mentioned means in cluding a memberhaving a slotted connection with the second bolt retracting member.
17. A latch for vehicle doors having in combination, a casing, a latch, spring means for moving said latch outwardly, means for moving said latch inwardly, means for locking said last mentioned means, and a rotary sliding spindle having a crank portion engaging said latch to move it inwardly, and engaging said locking means, said spindle upon rotation actuating said latch and upon sliding movement actuating said locking movements, and cam means effectual upon rotation of said spindle to automatically shift said spindle in one direction to unlock said first mentioned means.
18. In a door latch, the combination of a latch-bolt, a vertical rotatable spindle for moving the bolt, a roll-back by which the bolt may be'moved, a locking element arranged to abut the roll-back and prevent movement thereof, an operating lever operatively engaged with the locking element, and means carried by the spindle for setting the operating lever.
19. A door lock having, in combination, an outwardly spring pressed latch bolt, an out- Iii side operator, an inside operator, each being independently operable to withdraw the bolt, locking means to prevent unlatching by the outside operator, said inside operator being on pablc oi a locking and unlocking movement distinct from its unlatching' movement and being associated with said locking means whereby said distinct movement serves to actuate said locking means into locking and into retired position, and means effective to compel an unlocking movement of said inside operator upon withdrawal of the bolt by the inside operator, said movement-compelling means being effective upon the inside operator only during said unlatching movement of the inside operator, whereby to permit a manual locking and unlocking movement of the inside operator independently of the unlatching movement.

A latch mechanism having a sliding latch bolt, a pair of independently operable retractors for said bolt, one of said retractors being axially movable, apivoted lever for locking one of said retractors against movement. and a member operable by said axially movable retractor and connected to said lever intermediate its ends whereby axial movement of said axially movable retractor moves said lever to locking position.

A latch for vehicle doors including a latch belt. a roll-back tor actuating said bolt, a vertical spindle rotatably and slidably mounted and having a crank portion for actuating said bolt, a dog engageable with the roll-back to render the latter inoperative, said do; being movable by a portion of the bolt when the latter is actuated by the spindle, and a connection between said spindle and dog operable when the spindle slides in one direction to actuate the dog and operable when the do; is actuated by the portion aforesaid of the bolt to actuate the spindle.

A door lock having, in combination, a spring: projected bolt. independent outside and inside operators for the bolt, a locking member operatively associated with the inside operator and adapted to prevent operation of the bolt by the outside operator, and means operating automatically in the movement of the inside operator in a direction to withdraw the bolt to cause both the locking member and inside operator to be moved.

A door latch having. in combination, a spring projected bolt, an outside operator for said bolt, an inside operator for said bolt capable of rotary movement independently of said outside operator. a locking m mber operatively associated with the ins d operator and adapted to prevent operation ot the bolt by the outside operator. and means operable automatically when said inside opcrrtor is rotated to cause the locking; member to be rendered inoperative.

In a latch, the combination with a case plate, and a movable latch bolt carried thereby, of a member slidably mounted upon said case plate and operatively connected to said bolt to actuate the same, an arm adapted to be operated from one side of the case plate to actuate said member, a projection upon said member, a rotatable spindle journaled upon the case plate and having a crank portion engageable with said projection, a dog carried by the case plate adapted to be moved into the path 01": said arm to render the same inoperative, means carried by the spindle adapted to move the dog into the path of said arm when said spindle is moved in one direction, and means carried by said member adapted to move the dog out of the path of said arm When said spindle is moved in the opposite direction.

In a latch, the combination with a case plate, and a movable latch bolt carried thereby, of a member slidably mounted upon said case plate and operatively connected to said bolt to actuate the same, an arm adapted to be operated from one side of the case plate to actuate said member, a projection upon said member, a rotatable spindle j ournaled upon the case plate having a crank portion engageable with said projection, a dog carried by the case plate adapted to be moved into the path of said arm to render the same inoperative, means carried by the spindle adapted to move the dog into the path of said arm when said spindle is moved in one direction, a projection upon the dog, and an arm carried by said member engageable with said projection to move the dog out of the path of the first mentioned arm when the spindle is moved in the opposite direction.
32. In a latch, the combination with a latch bolt having a slidable shank provided with spaced projections, a member engageable With one of said projections for retracting the bolt, a member operable independently of the first member a ainst another ro'ection of said shank for retracting the bolt, the last member having a projection, and an element adapted to be actuated by the projection of the last mentioned member for dogging the first mentioned member and adapted to be moved by a projection of the bolt shank to inoperative dogging position when the bolt is J retracted by the last mentioned member.
