Description

May 26, 1931. E. M. SWARTZ CHILD'S CLOTHES SUPPORTER Filed June 2, 1930 gmemtor' I9 mlzabazlb fswa rlz,
Patented May 26, 1931 ELIZABETH MAY SWARTZ, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA CHILDS CLOTHES SUPIPORTER Application filed June 2,
My invention relates to a clothes supporter designed to be worn by infants and young children.
The primary object of my invention is to i provide a supporter for the conventional napkin or diaper that in position will distribute the strain on the shoulders of the wearer and will insure the greatest degree of comfort when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a supporter forthe napkin or diaper that eliminates attachment to the undervest and the consequent destruction of this garment after a short usage.
A further object of the invention is to provide a four point equally spaced attachment for the napkin or diaper that will hold the same firmly in place.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a supporter so constructed that it may be easily put on a child or removed, and which is light in weight and so ventilated as to cause no body discomfort in use.
It is also contemplated that this supporter may be worn as a single upper undergarment and when so used by older children buttons or other suitable fasteners on the depending tabs may support the nether garment.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved supporter.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of one side of the garment from the inside showing the fastening under the arm.
Figure 3 is a detail view of one of the tabs showing a specific form of fastener.
Figure 4 is a similar view of a tab with a different fastening arrangement.
The supporter comprises a body portion which is formed preferably of a single piece of material such as cotton or a similar fabric of a woven nature and the material can be formed either of a single or double thick ness. The body portion is formed with a head opening forming a neck band 1 with the usual shoulder straps 2 and opposed arm hole openings 3. The front and back portions are provided with a plurality of ventilating openings 4 which are preferably arranged 50 on opposite sides of the center line of the 1930. Serial No. 458,991.
front and back but obviously any other general arrangement of these ventilating openings may be used.
The piece of material from which the garment is formed has the adjacent side edges secured together by a seam 5. WVhen so connected the garment is substantially a one piece supporter. The lower edge of the garment is cut away at spaced interval-s to form a plurality of attaching'tabs at the front and back as indicated by the numerals 6 and 7 respectively and oppositely disposed side tabs indicated by the numerals 8 and9. These depending tabs form a four point support for the conventional napkin or diaper which is secured thereto by the usual safety pin arrangement.
To facilitate the positioning of the garment and removal of the same one side seam of said garment is opened downwardly from beneaththe arm hole for a short'distance. To the inner side of one edge of the garment is attached an extending flap 10 and cooperating separable fasteners 11 are carried by the flap and adjacent side edge section so that these portions may be connected as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the garment.
If desired the depending tabs may be provided with eyelets 12 as shown in Figure 4 to facilitate the attachment of the conventional safety pin fasteners. Also in case the garment is used on older children the depending tabs may be provided with a button 13 or any other form of separable fastener 35 wherein the tabs may be attached to the nether garment or some form of hose supporter,
This garment is so formed so as to substantially fit the body and when positioned on an infant or small child the strain of support for either the napkin or diaper or other garment is distributed on the shoulders of the wearer. The separable opening down one side of the side seam facilitates positioning and removing the garment. The use of this seam opening is optional as in some instances it will be unnecessary to pro- 'vide this supplemental opening.
The supporter is designed primarily for napkins or diapers and obviously when in position the diaper is supported at the front, back and opposite sides of the garment. This affords a four point suspension that is much more satisfactory than the usual two point suspension and connection to the conventional undervest now employed. It is contemplated that the garment may be used as a one piece upper undergarment for older children and it will form a satisfactory support for any nether garments worn therewith. When used in such relation of course buttons or other suitable fasteners are positioned on the depending tabs.
This specification and the accompanying drawings described and illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the disclosure does not constitute a limitation upon the scope of the invention. Any desired changes and modifications may be made in the structural details as will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
A supporter of the character described comprising a body portion formed of a Single piece blank of material cut to form a neck band and arm holes, the adjacent side edges of the piece being connected beneath the arm holes to form a continuous body encircling portion, the front and back parts of the body portion having a plurality of ventilating openings therein, and the lower edge of said body portion being cut back to a point approximately midway to the lower most line of the arm holes at spaced intervals to form depending tabs at the front, back and opposite sides.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ELIZABETH MAY SWARTZ.
