Inventor.-
Arthur Frisch y a 4/ Aflomey Patented May 26, 1931 rarer orrics ARTHUR FRISCH, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK DOLL-HEAD AND THE LIKE Application filed April 18, 1929. Serial No. asaoos.
My invention relates in general to dolls, the invention being more particularly related to a movable feature in doll-heads, although the invention is not necessarily confined thereto, but is capable of use in connection with any toy-figure provided with a mouth opening.
The invention has for its main object and purpose the provision of a movable tongue and of movable teeth mounted for operation in association with the mouth opening in the doll-head.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a movable feature ofvthe character referred to, which will be automatic in its operation, being arrangedto assume first one position and then another according to the position given to the doll-head.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a movable feature of the foregoing character which is simple ill construction and arrangement, compact, efficient, and inexpensive to manufacture, as well as designed to be interesting and entertaining to children.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
The invention resides ill the construction and in the arrangement or arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary vertical section through a doll-head provided with the movable tongue and teeth features of my invention, the doll-head being here shown in upright position;
Fig. 2 represents a similar view showing the doll-head in inclined position;
Fig. 3 represents a front elevational view on a larger scale of the part comprising the support and upper set of teeth;
Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the tongue; and
Fig. 5 represents a front elevational View of the swingable part with the lower set of teeth.
Referring with more particularity to the parts illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, 10 designates in general the front or face portion of a hollow (lOll-lltlCl which may be produced ill any known or approved manner. Included in the front or face portion are the usual features comprising a nose 11, a chin 12, and lips 13 and 14 which are shown as open or parted to provide a mouth opening 15 through which the movable tongue and teeth features of my invention may be seen.
My invention, in its preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, comprises a supporting element which is designated in its entirety by the numeral 16 and is represented as composed of a lower front part 17, a rearwardly extending part 18, an upwardly extending part 19, and a forwardly extending part '20. I
At the angular junction of the parts 17 and 18, there is preferably formed a-suitable forward deformation 21' adapted to seat in a concavity 22 provided in the inner face of the lower lip 14, whereby the supporting element may be properly positioned within the hollow head in relation to the mouth openillg. At its front end the forwardly projecting part 20 is provided with a depending section or flange 23 arranged to extend alongside the inner face of the upper lip 13 and which is formed or painted in simulation of an upper set of teeth as best'illustrated ill Fig. 8. The supporting element and the section or flange '23 are so made and proportioned that when the formeris secured in position within the doll-head the latter or an appropriate portion thereof will be exposed to View in the mouth-opening 15 immediately below the upper lip 13. y
The lower front part 17 of the supporting element is represented as being provided with struck out prongs 24 adapted to be pressed into the material of the doll-head so as to secure the supporting element rigidly therewith. In place of the prongs 24-, any other equivalent or suitable means of attachment may be employed. Moreover, if desired,-the supporting element may be secured in place by means of glue, cement, or
other adhesive substance suitable for the purpose. 7
According to an important feature of my invention, I make use of an angular swingable element 25 which is mounted through a suitable opening 26 provided in the upwardly extending part it) closely adjacent the rearwardly extending part 18, so that the arm 27 of the swingable element can rest upon the top surface. of the rearwardly extending part 18 when the doll-head is in upright or approximately upright position, as illustrated in Fig. 1. At its forward end, the arm 27 is formed or provided with-a section or flange 28 in simulation of a lower set of teeth complementary to the upper set of teeth. Preferably and as shown, the section 28 is so made and proportioned with respect to the lower lip 14 that when the doll-head is in upright position as shown in Fig. 1, said section or flange 28 will be concealed by the lower lip. Applied to the lower end of the other arm 29 is a weight 30 which serves as means by which automatically tomove the swingable element when the doll-head is inclined from upright position.
According to a further feature of my invention, I provide a tongue member 31 having an enlarged front portion 32. This tongue member is passed through a suitable slot 33 in the upwardly extending part 19 and has a slot 34 through which is passed the end of an arm 35 preferably struck out of the arm 29 of the swingable element. In this manner I prefer to mount the tongue on the supporting element and to'pivotally connect it with the swingable element, so that when the doll-head is in upright position with the section 28 concealed behind lower lip 14, the enlarged portion 32 of the tongue will occupy a position between the complementary sections 28 and 23. As shown in Fig. 2, when the doll-head is given a forward inclination, the swingable element will withdraw the tongue so that the section 28 can abut the section 23. By this arrangement, therefore, to project the tongue and conceal the section 28 the doll-head is moved into upright position, whereas in order to retract the tongue and cause the lower section to close against the upper section the doll-head is given a forward inclination. Through this arrangement, I produce the effect of two opening and closing sets of teeth and of a movable tongue which is projected outward- 1y between the two sets of teeth by reason of the opening movement and which is retracted and concealed when the closing movement has been accomplished.
My intention is characterized by the fact that it is extremely simple, comprising essentially three main parts consisting of a supporting element, a swingable element. and a tongue member. My invention is further characterized by being compact, so that the to the mouth-opening.
parts in their entirety can be readily entered through the usual neck opening (not shown) leading to the interior of the hollow head. Owing to their form and arrangement, the parts, after being entered through the neck opening, can be readily secured in place so that the sections 28 and 23 and aswell the tongue member will come in proper relation The parts comprising my invention may be produced from suitable paper, carboard, light sheet metal, or any other appropriate material. The teeth and tongue features may, if desired, be produced by painting or other embellishment.
\Vhile I have thus illustrated and described a single preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that changes and alterations in the details of construction as well as in the mode of imparting movement to the swingable element may be made, to which changes andalterations I am entitled, provided the same are effected within the scope of the annexed claims.
