There have been heretofore proposed various types of dolls having liquid holding reservoirs and Weeping eyes together with fluid receiving months for the purpose of emulating babies capable of being fed with water and thereafter capable of weeping at the eyes or otherwise extruding the liquid stored within the body from the feeding process.
Likewise, the prior are contains dolls having movable mouth elements as well as dolls having sleeping eye elements or eye elements capable of producing tears in conjunction with liquid reservoirs. in a prior application of the present applicant, SN. 646,678, filed March 18, 1957, there is disclosed an eye of the sleeping doll type so constructed as to perform a weeping function. In the present invention such an eye is used in conjunction with a novel type of doll mouth capable of accepting liquid from a toy baby bottle and wherein and by virtue of the combination with the squeezable reservoir such liquid may be stored for future extrusion through the tearing eye.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide the combination of a liquid accepting mouth, a squeezable reservoir, and a tearing eye all arranged in a simple, compact, and economical manner and so contrived that assembly by a doll manufacturer of the eye and mouth units may be readily effected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a doll month which is automatically movable by Weight actuation so that when the doll is held vertically teeth are visible through the lips of the doll face, whereas when the doll is in repose a passageway appears through the lips into which a doll nipple may be inserted.
Briefly, the present invention provides for the mouth and tearing eye combination hereinabove set forth, a suitable liquid storage and extruding system wherein extrusion is effected by squeezing the flexible body of the doll and wherein the mouth comprises a structure generally similar to a sleeping doll eye of known construction heretofore invented by me and comprising a reinforced casing as shown in my patent application S.N. 573,770, filed March 26, 1956, now Patent No. 2,838,874.
A detailed description of the invention will now be given in conjunction with the appended drawing in which:

Referring now to the drawing, the invention comprises a doll head ill of flexible plastic or rubber carried on a flexible body having the neck 15 which may be forced into the aperture of the doll head and locked Patented Jan. 16, 1&62

therein as by the integral flange 24. The doll head carries a sleeping-weeping eye 23 of a construction heretofore taught in my patent application, S.N. 573,770, referred to hereinabove, and also carries a mouth device 32 which will be noted as comprising a casing similar to the casing of a sleeping doll eye and which may be inserted in a socket 36 provided in the doll head substantially the same as the insertion of the eye, being forced therein and gripped by the resiliency of the doll head material. Thus, the cavity 36 terminates in a pair of lips 40 and 42 which are spaced apart as shown so as to render visible a red plastic molded movable element 46 of the novel doll mouth. The movable element is in many ways similar to a sleeping doll eyeball element being pivotally carried on trunnions 52 receivable in slots or grooves 56 provided laterally within the sides of a shell 60 having a front opening 64. The trunnions 52 are locked in place by a reinforcing ring 63 having the flange 72 abuttable against the edge 76 of the shell and locked in place by a rear casing 80 of generally frustum shape and to which is applied a short length of tube 34 sealed thereto.

in order to effect relative rotation of the mouth element for the vertical and horizontal positions of the doll head the mouth element 46 is provided with a weight such as a small slug of metal 8% which may be molded directly with the mouth element or forced therein after molding, as will be understood by persons skilled in the art. Further, the mouth element may be molded with a surface simulating one or more infantile gums or provided with simulated teeth 38, a pair of which are visible in FIG. 2, and such teeth may be represented by being painted thereon, for example, in the form of a pair of baby teeth, as shown. However, it will be understood that separate White plastic tooth elements may be utilized to represent the teeth and such elements may be imbedded, cemented, or otherwise affixed to the rotative element 46.
The rotative element is provided with a through passageway 92 having a pair of angularly related portions as best seen in FIGS. 4 and 7, such portions being so disposed in order to preserve the generally spherical configuration of the element 46 while at the same time provide space for accommodation of the weight 86.
It will be apparent by comparing FIGS. 3 and 4 that the nipple of a baby bottle lilil may be thrust into the passageway 92, such nipple being preferably flexible, as indicated in FIG. 4, although not necessarily so, whereby fiuid such as water may be introduced into the passageway from the bottle and thence to flow into the tube 84, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Preferably the bottle 1% is of the plastic, squeezable type so that fluid can be forced therefrom.
From the above description it will be apparent, upon comparison of FIGS. 4 and 7, that by virtue of the trunnion mount of the mouth element 46, when the doll head is horizontal as shown in FIG. 4 the passage 92 is exposed, the representation of the teeth 88 being at that time concealed. Thus, the weight as shown in FIG. 4, being at the lowermost portion of the element 86, maintains the passageway 92 exposed for reception of a nipple. However, when the doll face is vertically positioned the effect of the weight is to maintain the element 46 in substantially the same position, but now the relative rotation of the lips carries them around so that the teeth 88 are exposed to view. The rearward extending portion of the a weight abuts, as a limit stop, the ring 68 in the position shown in FIG. 7 so as to properly position the teeth for full visibility.
In order to lend realism to the mouth element structure the passageway 92 has its entry port in a cavity 1% which also serves as a guide for the bottle nipple. The cavity 164 may be in the form of a crevice as shown.
Referring now to FIG. I, it will be seen that the tube 84 connects through a piece of flexible tubing 108 to a reservoir 112 formed as part of the doll body. A flapper valve 110 which may conceivably be formed from the inner Wall 114 of the reservoir normally closes the outlet end of tube 108 at the point of entry into the reservoir. The particular mode of manufacturing the doll body with the reservoir and the flapper valve does not form part of the invention. In any event, the particular construction and hydraulic action of the reservoir and attendant valves is of a conventional nature and long known in the art. Obviously, the reservoir and the valve elements together with tube 12% may all, if desired, be separate pieces assembled at the time the doll is assembled. Thus, the arrangement herein given is purely for illustrative purposes.
The tearing eye 28 connects through a piece of tubing 116 and a ball check valve 120 to the reseivoir 112, it being understood that a tube extension 122 is provided leading down close to the bottom of the cavity so that a small amount of water therein may have access through tubing 122 to the eye 23. Thus, when the body is squeezed at the back portion 128 the air pressure thus set up forces liquid into the tube 122 and past the check valve 120 into the weeping eye 28 to effect a weeping function.
It will be noted that the reservoir 112 is large enough so that there will be no problem in connection with forcing liquid from tube 18 8 thereinto wherein such flow might be obstructed by air compression. In any event, any rise of pressure in the chamber will cause opening of check valve 12! to relieve the air pressure through the weeping eye 28.
It will, of course, be understood that the tube 116 and ball check valve 129 is duplicated so as to feed liquid to the other eye. However, in order to eliminate such duplication it will be apparent that a tap may be taken off tube 116 with a piece of flexible tubing (not shown) to extend to the other eye of the doll.
Having thus described my invention I am aware that various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof and accordingly I do not seek to be limited to the precise illustration herein given except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
I. A movable mouth device for a doll head comprising a shell having a forward opening, a pivotal mouth element carried in said shell and having trunnion means supporting said element therein, a casing means closing the rear of said shell and confining said mouth element therein, said mouth element being formed with a surface portion simulating at least one tooth and a crevice portion simulating th interior of an open mouth; including a weight carried by said mouth element within said shell for effecting relative rocking of said element with respect to said shell as said shell is rotated in a vertical plane, said shell and casing means comprising a sealing housing for said mouth element, and a duct through said mouth element open at the front end thereof and communicating at the rear thereof with the interior of said housing, and duct means at the rear of said housing and passing therethrough to communicate with the duct through said doll mouth element.
2. In a doll, a doll head having a mouth cavity with a front opening, a doll mouth device comprising a housing for insertion in said cavity; said housing having an open front end, a mouth element in said housing, means pivotally supporting said mouth element within said housing, said mouth element having relative rotation with respect to said housing, a weight carried by said mouth element within said housing for effecting said relative rotation as said housing is rotated, a portion of the surface of said mouth element having a simulation of denture means visible through said open end of said housing and said mouth cavity opening and another portion of said mouth element being formed with a crevice to simulate the interior of an open mouth and being visible through said open end of said housing and said mouth cavity opening when said mouth element has moved relative to said housing to conceal said denture means within said housing, and duct means through said mouth element at said crevice to effect passage of liquid through said mouth element.
3. A doll head comprising an open mouth with parted lips, a mouth element disposed at the entry of said mouth and adjacent said lips, means pivotally supporting said mouth element within said dol head, a weight carried by said mouth element for effecting relative rotation between said element and said head, said element having denture means visible through the exterior of said doll head through the parted lips thereof, said denture means being concealable within said doll head by relative rotation between said doll head and said mouth element, including a passageway through said mouth element having a port accessible through the parted lips of said doll head when said denture means has been relatively rotated to a position of concealment, said mouth element being an integral unitary structure simulating upper and lower portions of an open mouth, said port extending therefrom through the body of the material of said mouth element.
4. In a device as set forth in claim 3, a housing surrounding said mouth element, said mouth element being pivotally supported within said housing and comprising an integral unit therewith, a duct means connected to said housing whereby liquid introduced into said passage-way from exteriorly of the doll head flows into said housing and has egress therefrom through said duct means.
5. A doll head comprising an open mouth with parted lips, a mouth element disposed at the entry of said mouth and adjacent said lips, means pivotally supporting said mouth element within said doll head, a weight carried by said mouth element for effecting relative rotation between said element and said head, said element having denture means visible through the exterior of said doll head through the parted lips thereof, said denture means being concealable within said doll head by relative rotation between said roll head and said mouth element, including a passageway through said mouth element visible from the parted lips of said doll head when said denture means has been relatively rotated to a position of concealment, including means encompassing said mouth element and substantially sealing said mouth element from the interior of said doll head and duct means leading from said sealing means to the interior of said doll head whereby liquid may be introduced into said passageway and flow into the interior of said doll head through said duct means.
6. In a device as set forth in claim 5, said sealing means comprising a housing encompassing said mouth element and effecting an integral unit therewith and said duct means comprising a tube carried by said housing.
7. A. doll head comprising an open mouth with parted lips, a mouth element disposed at the entry of said mouth and adjacent said lips, means pivotally supporting said mouth element within said doll head, a weight carried by said mouth element for effecting relative rotation between said element and said head, said element having denture means visible through the exterior of said doll head through the parted lips thereof, said denture means being concealable within said doll head by relative rotation between said doll head and said mouth element, including a passageway through said mouth element visible from the parted lips of said doll head when said denture means has been relatively rotated to a position of concealment, including means encompassing said mouth element and substantially sealing said mouth element from the interior of said doll head and duct means leading from said sealing means to the interior of said doll head whereby liquid may be introduced into said passageway and flow into the interior of said doll head through said duct means, said sealing means comprising a housing encompassing said mouth element, said means for pivotally supporting said mouth element being said housing, said housing and mouth element effecting an integral unit insertable in a doll head.

A doll head comprising an open mouth with parted lips, a mouth element disposed at the entry of said mouth and adjacent said lips, means pivotally supporting said mouth element within said doll head, a weight carried by said mouth element for efiecting relative rotation between said element and said head, said element having denture means visible through the exterior of said doll head through the parted lips thereof, said denture means being concealable within said doll head by relative rotation between said doll head and said mouth element, including a passageway through said mouth element visible from the parted lips of said doll head when said denture means has been relatively rotated to a position of concealment, including means encompossing said mouth element and substantially sealing said mouth element from the interior of said doll head and duct means leading from said sealing means to the interior of said doll head whereby liquid may be introduced into said passageway and flow into the interior of said doll head through said duct means, said sealing means comprising a housing encompassing said mouth element and effecting an integral unit therewith and said duct means comprising a tube connected to said housing.

A doll mouth device for insertion in a cavity of a doll head, comprising a unitary element having a shell open at one end at least and a doll mouth element disposed within said shell and mounted for relative rotation With respect thereto so as to expose either of two areas at said opening, one such area simulating denture means and the other of said areas simulating an open mouth, passageway means within said shell disposed to conduct liquid from said open end into the interior of said shell when said simulated open mouth area is exposed at said open end and passageway means leading from said shell to provide egress of liquid therefrom.
10. A doll mouth device as set forth in claim 9, the area simulating said open mouth being formed with a nipple-receiving crevice.
