Fig.1? has a; centrala opening. surrounded by azta-pered depending flange 2 of-a; size to fits-nug ly within the cup-shapedportion-.18 oithe upper end. of the. 56111 provid-ing aiglass lining, for the metal cup anda glass receptacle or. tray for the. ashes, cigar and-cigarette huttsandathe like. The glasstray I2-isprovided with an up.- standingmarginal flange 23. adapted not only to retain the ashes and the like deposited. in the tray,.hut also serves as ameans torremoving the asliesi from a burning cigar; or cigarette. The fiangeQSiS also provided with thicken edL recessed-portions 2i which. serve as restsfor the. cigars and. cigarettes.
Theitray 12 is provided on one sidewith .anupstanding. flange 25 adapted to fit snug.- ly withinthe outer'jacket of a conventional matoln box and. having 2h curvedz inner. face 26 for co-operation with. a complementarily curved; upstanding flange '27 which together form. a-socketfor the reception of the base of an. electriecigar lighter28: Also theflanges 25: and'QI- are spaced in. a manner toaccommodate. between them a: packet 0t. matches, thus. adapting this part. of. the tray to hold either amatch b021,. a packet. ofmatehes oran electrie. cigar lighter: whichever may lee-preferred and interchangeable one with the other.
The stand may be provided with any desired ornamentation to render the same attractive in appearance and the glass tray or top section may be etched or otherwise ornamented.
The central depending circular flange 20 which extends down into the cup or socket in the top of the stem not only affords protection against heat to the metal but also since it is transparent permits the color and ornamentation on the interior surface of the metal cup to be readily seen therethrough as this is one of the important features for the interior of the cup is preferably given bright colors to increase its ornamental appearance.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown modified forms which comprise metal trays 29 and 30 provided with central openings about which are formed circular flanges 31 and 32 which are adapted to have their lower ends pressed over the upper end of the stem 11 for uniting the parts. The trays are preferably stamped so that they have upstanding marginal rims or flanges 33 and 34 with flared depending skirts, said marginal flanges be ing provided with flattened depressions 35 and 36 forming rests for cigars and cigarettes.
As shown in Fig. 3, a strap 37 may be attached to the tray to form a handle by means of which it may be carried about, a socket member 38 being attached to the center of the handle, such socket member being adapted to interchangeably support a match box or cigar lighter in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the handle may be omitted and the socket member attached directly to the tray as shown in Fig. 4. In either case, however, Ipreferably provide a glass lining for the trays, two sections 39 being necessary for the modification shown in Fig. 3, and one section 40 being necessary for the tray shown in Fig. 4, the last'mentioned section however being provided with a recess 41 to accommodate the socket member 38.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6 I have shown a hollow cast iron base'42 attached to the lower end of a hollow. stem 43, said base being provided with an openlower end andhaving a detachable or removable waste chamber'or receptacle 44. The receptacle 44 is held in place by a pair of opposed retaining fingers 45 which extend through spring casings 46 and are held in outwardly projected position by means of springs 47 which bear against collars 48 on the horizontal portion of the spring fingers 45. The spring casings or housings 46 extend through the wall of the base 42 and are in convenient location to be readily manipulated by pressing on knobs 49 on the outer ends of the spring fingers. IVith this construction, when the knobs 49 are pressed thespring fingers are located substantially close together to permit their hook portions 50 to pass freely through the mouth 51 of the waste chamber to permit the ready removal of the same when it is desired to empty its contents. In order, however, to prevent the waste chamber from being accidentally released from its position within the base 42 I make the waste'chamber and the base of close fitting construction, so that in order to release the waste chamber it is necessary to press the knobs 49iforcontracting the spring fingers when the device is resting upon a fiat surface. The waste chamber therefore cannot be released except in this position.
In replacing the waste chamber it is only necessary to place the stand over the said waste chamber when the springs 47 will yield and the spring fingers will snap into place through the mouth of the receptacle 44,-thus automatically accomplishing the coupling action without requiring any specific manual operation. p I
- These and other modifications may be substituted for that shown in Fig. 1 without departing from the spirit of the invention which consists in providing a metal base and stem with a top of glass whereby such a device is provided which is not only more durable and protected against deterioration by use, but also adds materially to its attractiveness as an article of furniture. I
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, andI, therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown inthe drawings and described in thespecification, but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire t secure by Letters Patent, isz' 1. A smokers stand comprising a hollow base, a detachable waste receptacle carried by said base, and means connecting the base and receptacle operable for releasing the receptacle from the base only when the'receptacle is supported in a substantially horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
2. A'smokers stand comprising a hollow base, having an openbottom, a waste receptacle in said base removable through said open bottom, means detachably connecting said base and receptacle, said means being adapted tov release the receptacle only when the bottom of the receptacle is insubstantially parallel relation to the bottom of the base, substantially asset forth. I
3. A smokers stand comprising a hollow base, having an open bottom, a waste receptacle in said base vremovable through said open bottom, means detachably comiecting said base and receptacle, said means comprising spring fingers projecting through the side of the base in a position to be manually operated, and means urging'said spring fingers apart, substantially as set forth.
lid
4. A smokers stand comprising a hollow base, having an open bottom, a waste receptacle in said base removable through said open bottom, means detaehably connecting said base and receptacle, said means comprising housing extending outwardly through the walls of the base, spring fingers extending through said housings and provided with manipulating extremities, collars on each of said spring fingers within said housings, and means in said housings engaging said collars and urging said spring fingers apart, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 5th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-eight.
