Description

J. SMITH. v TOOLS FOR smvnr'e LEATHER. NL13Q557 Patented Aug-1,1876.
\/\/-|Tr \l E55E5 INVEN U JJ, (13% W 5M N. ETERS. PHOTO-LITMOGRAPHER WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASON SMITH, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO OHAS.
' O. FOSTER, OF BOSTON,-MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR SHAVING LEATHER Specification. forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 180,667, dated August 1, 1876; application filed May 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAsON SMITH, of Boston, in the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Tools for Shaving Leather, ofwhich the folwith the leather to be operated upon, to which is hinged an arm, carrying a knife having two cutting-edges, and which may beset at any desired angle. A gage bears against the edge of the leather, and, being adjustable to the knife, the operator is enabled to make the bevel of any width that may be desired. A spring, attached to and projecting beyond the gage, has a bearing on the upper surface of I the leather at either side of the knife, and
serves to prevent the leather from curling before the knife.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective,
view of my invention. Fig. 2 isa plan of the under side, a being the knife, 12 the gage, and c the spring. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section,
showing the different parts as when in operation, A being the handle, B the hinged arm I held in place by the brace l), secured by screw d. f is the thumb-screw that secures the knife (1 to the arm B. The gage b is secured to the handle by the screw 9. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the knife on and spring 0 in operation, as representing a piece of leather, the tool moving in the direction shown by the arrows.
The operation of using my'invention is as follows: The leather is laid on the cuttinghoard, and held in place with the left hand. With the tool in the right hand it is placed so that the gage will bear against the edge of the leather and the spring on its upper surface. When the tool is moved in either direction, the knife will shave the leather to the bevel and thickness at which the knife is set.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, the handle-A, hinged arm B, two-edged knife a, and thumb-screw f, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. in combination, the handle A, hinged knife a, gage b, and spring 0, all arranged and operating substantially as described.
