This invention relates to metal-binding machines and more particularly to a machine for attaching metallic binding elements to the corners or edge-s of pocketbooks or the '5 like.
An object of this invention is an improved, eihcient and inexpensive machine of this character which securely fastens the binding element quickly and expeditiously.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, with the parts in inoperative position;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, with the parts in operative position;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views.
rIhe machine comprises a bed 10 which may be fastened to a workbench or other support.
A block 11 is attached to the plate 10 bybolts 12. This block is substantially rectangular in cross-section and is provided at one end with a V-shaped recess 13. The block 11 is also provided with bores in which are slidably arranged the rods 111. rFliese rods carry at their upper end a plate 16. Interposed between the block lland the plate 16 are aplurality of springs 17 which tend to keep the plate 16` out of contact with the 3Q block 11.
A bolt 13 passing through the plate 16 and threaded into the bleek 11 limits the movement of the plate 16 under the influence of the springs 17. A yoke 19 has its legs passing through apertures in the frame 10, the ends of the legs being attached to the plate 16 by means of bolts 20. An operating rod 21 is screwed into lthe bow of the yoke and provides means whereby a pull may be erted on the yoke 19 to move the plate 16 towards the block 11. A
By means of the bolt 22, a pressure head 23 is attached to the plate 16. This pressure head is shaped to ht into the groove 13 in the endv of the block 11 and is designed to slide up 'and down in this groove. A pressure foot 2a' is carried by the head 23 and is also shaped to conform to the groove 13. The pressure foot is provided with an upstanding lug 25 fitting into a sliot in the head 23. A bolt 26 carried by the head 23 has its end extending into a groove provided in the lug 25 to attach the pressure foot to the head and at the same time permit slight pivotal movement of the former relative to the latter.
`A resilient member 2T is carried by the plate 16 and comprises a resilient piece of steel which is arranged obliquely to the direction of movement of the plate 16 and slants downwardly toward the block 11. 1t is adjustably attached to the plate 16 by bolts 28 passing through slots in the upper end of the member 27 and threaded into the plate 16. Vertical adjustmentA of the member 27 is accomplished by means of the adjusting screw 29. At the lower end of the member 27, there is provided a friction strip 30.
Gage elements 31 are provided for effecting the proper positioning of an article to be operated upon with respect to the other elements of the machine. That portion 32 of the plate 10 which is arranged directly below and in line with the pressure foot 24 is made removable so that it may be taken out and polished when such action is required.
In the operation of this device, a pocket-4 book corner 33 or the like with a clip or binding element 34 arranged over the corner is introduced into the machine with the binding element resting on the inner end of the removable portion 32 and in contact withthe walls of the groove 13. rlhe yoke 1S) is then pulled downwardly through the medium of any suitable power applied through the rod 21. This causes the head 23 and the plate 16 to descend, thus bringing the friction member 3() into contact with the pocketbook or other device to the corner of which a binding element is being applied.
