Description

J. O. McKEAN INVENTOR ATTORNEYS May' 19, 1931.
Patented May 19, 1931 UNITED STATES PAKTENT w OFFICE'.
JOHN 0. MGKEAN, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSZE'I'TS ASSIGNOR TO FOSTER MACHTNE i COMPANY, OF WESTFIELD,- MASSACHUSETTS, *A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS COP CONE HOLDERFOR CREELS Application filed October 4, 1928. Serial No. 310,261.
The object of my inventionis to provide a very simple and eflective device Whereby a doWnWardly inclined cop cone may be held by friction on its supporting spindle in such a manner that the cone can be rotated on its spindle and may be readily slipped on and off the spindle.
My improved device comprises, broadly, an expansion spring rotatively mounted onthe spindle and frictionally engaging the interior Walls of the cop cone. My ,invention more specifically .comprises a spindle having its' outer portion of smaller diameter than its inner portlon, a screW engagmg the outer end of the spindle being provided for rot-atvely supporting the Spring, the Spring 'having a central portion mounted on the *screw and provided With rearwardly extended 'bowed arms arranged to frictionally engage the interior Walls of the cop cone.
Practical embodiments of my invention are represented in'the accompanying drawin s, in Which ig. 1 represents one embodiment of my invention, the cop cone being shown in longitudinalcentral section and the holder in side elevation.
the plane of the line II II of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arroWsn Fig. 3 represents a cross section taken in the plane of the line III- III of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrovys.
Fig. 4 represents a detail view showing another embodiment of my nvention in Which the annular groove in the interior walls of the cop cone is omitted.
Fig. 5 represents one form of the Spring in perspective.
The cop cone denoted by 1 may be made of Wood -or other suitable material and of the desired shape, the bore of Which cone 1s denoted by 2.
The stationary spindle Which IS adapted to enter the bore of the cop cone is herein shown as having an inner portion 3 of one diameter, an outer portion4 of a smaller diameter an an intermediate tapered portion 5. The inner portion of the spindle is adapted to loosely fit within the bore 2 of the cop cone 1.
represents a cross section taken in An expansion springis rotatably mounted at theouter end of the spindle, Which Spring is herein shown as comprising a central portion 6 and a pair of rearwardly extended arms 7, 8, Which arms are preferably boWed to facilitate the slipping on and otf of the groove 11 at' the point Where the bowed arms of the Spring engage the Walls of the bore for assisting the arms in holding the cop cone on the spindle. In Fig. 4 this groove is omitted and the frictional engagement of the arms With the Walls of the bore of the cop cone is intended to be sulficient to holcl the cop cone on the spindle. It Will be seen from the above description that' I have provided a very simple and effective means for frctionally holding the copcone on its spindle, the
Spring for accomplishing this purpose being intended to rotate With the cop cone on the spindle as well as holding the cop cone in position on the said spindle.
A It is evdent that Various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts Without de parting from the Spirit and scope of my invention, hence, I do' not intend to be limited to the particular embodiments herein shown and described, but
hat I claim is: v
1. A cop cone holder comprising a. spindle, a screw engaging the outer end of the spindle and an expansion Spring rotatably mounted onthe screW and arranged to frictionally engage the interior Walls of the cone.
2. A cop cone holder comprising a spindle d having its outer portion of lesser diameter than its inner portlon, an expansion Spring having a central portion rot-atably mounted at the outer end of the spindle and also having rearwardly extended arms for frictionally engaging the interior walls of the cone and a screW engaging the outer end of the spindle and forming a mounting for the sprm 3. A cop 00110 holder comprising a spindle having its o uter portion of lesser diameter than its inner portion, an expanson Spring having :1 central portion rotn tably mounted 1o |t the outer end of the spindle and :1150 huvlng rounvau'dly extended bowed arms for frictionnlly engaging the interior Wells of: the cone and a screw engagng the outer end of the spindle und fm'lning :1 lnounting for the Spring.
In testmony, that I clam the foregong as my invention, I have signed. my name this :nd day of Oct. 1928.
JOHN O. MCKEAN.
