C IGARETTE HOLDER Filed Dec. 12, 1927 1N VENTOR M,
ATTORNEY Patented May 12, 1931 UNITED STATES JAIEES HERMAN ABBOTT, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA CIGARETTE HOLDER Application filed December 12, 1927. .Serial No. 239,284.
My invention relates to devices for holding cigarettes as they are being smoked, and 1t has for its general object to provide means whereby cigarettes may be held at points intermediate their ends, preferably about their middle points, so that both ends may be lighted and smoked simultaneously.
It also is an object of the invention to provide a holder of the character indicated havscribed in detail, particularly pointed out in the claims; and as illustrated in the drawings wherein certain forms of construction embodying the invention and illustrating the principle thereof are depicted.
It will be understood that the invention is susceptible of embodiment in holders. of other construction than those shown, and that various changes in the details of construction may be made withinthe scope of the claims without departing from the invention or the principle thereof.
In the drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a'holder embodying the invention which is. adapted for holding cigarettes for smoking with either end or both ends thereof lighted;
Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinal section taken in a plane substantially at right angles to the length of a cigarette which may be held and supported thereby;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the outer or holding end portion of the holder shown in Fig. 1, withthe cigarette removed;
Fig. 5 is a view in longitudinal section of a modified construction of holder, the said view being taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation;
Fig.v 7 is a view of a holder provided with means whereby the outer end or cigaretteholding portion thereof may be held in elevated relation with respect to a table or other support upon which the said holder may be placed; and I Fig. 8 is a View in perspective of the means shown in Fig. 7 for supporting the outer end of the cigarette-holding portion of the holder in elevated relation to a table or other support upon which it may be placed.
In the drawings I have shown a holder comprising an elongated tapered stem-like member 1 having a passageway 2 extending longitudinally thereof as usual and in known manner.
In the construction as illustrated in Figs.
1 to 4 inclusive-the opening 2 terminates at its forward or outer end in an enlarged portion' 3 which is closed bymeans of an ornamental cap 4 which fits over the outerend of the said holder. The holder is provided in adjoining relation to its outer end with a notch 5 which extends transversely thereof. The said notch is circular in cross sectionto correspond with the shape in cross section of a cigarette and the said notch opens upon 7 one side of the holder, as indicated at'6. In the insertion of cigarettes. into the notch5 they are placed in the opening 6 and pushed laterally thereonto. Preferably the opening 6 is of a width somewhat less than the diamportion 11 thereof projecting into and transversely of the said notch. Preferably the outer or upper edge of the projecting end portion 11 is shaped to constitute a .knife edge. The essential thing, however, is that the projecting end portion shall be of a character to puncture the wrappers of cigarettes as they are pressed down into the notch 5.
In order to positively and effectively retain the cigarettes within the notch 5 as they are being smoked I have provided a retaining device consisting of a narrow strip of metal 15 which is mounted in a shallow groove 16 in a side of the holder and inwardly of the notch 5. The said retaining strip 15 is held or retained in position by means of a metal band 17 which encircles the holder in adjoining relation to the inner side of the notch 5, as is clearly shown in the drawing. The outer end portion of the retaining strip 15 is inclined outwardly, as indicated at 18, t0 facilitate the movement of the said outer end portion into position over a cigarette, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In order to facilitate the withdrawal of the retaining strip into retracted position as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have provided the inner end there of with an outwardly extending projection 20. The said projection when the strip is moved forwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, contacts with the inner edge of the encircling metal band 17. The movement of the strip in the opposite direction is limited by the contact of the inner end thereof with a shoulder 21 at the inner end of the shallow groove 16.
In 5 and 6 I have shown a construction embodying the invention in which the opening 2 terminates inwardly of the outer end of the holder 1 and in which also the outer end of said opening is in communication with a cylindrical hole or passageway 25, which extends through the said holder. In theiorm of construction as illustrated in these two figures no means is provided for automatically puncturing the wrappers of cigarettes as they are inserted endwise through "the opening 25. Said wrappers should be punctured prior to their insertion through said opening. The opening 25 is cylindrical in cross section as shown, and of a size such that the cigarettes fit more or less closely therein.
In Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings I have shown a holder of the form illustrated in Fi s. 1 to 4 having means whereby, when a ho der is placed upon a table or other support, the forward or outer cigarette-holding portion thereof may be sustained in elevated relation to the top of such table or other support. The means provided or employed for that purpose comprises a metal wire bent to the shape shown in Fig. 8 having opposite side portions 27, the inner ends of which terminate in laterally and inwardly projecting portions 28 and 28. The portions 28 are adapted to enter holes 29 provided upon opposite sides of the holder in diametrical relation to each other. The lower end portion of the holder-supporting device is bent laterally and slightly widened, as indicated at 30. lVhen in use for supporting the outer cigarette-holding end portion of the holder in elevated position, as shown in Fig. 7, the supporting or sustaining device occupies the full line position shown in Fig. 7, but when not in use for sustaining the holder the said device is folded back into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 7 and is retained in such position because the distance between the points a and 6 upon the wire-supporting or sustaining device is less than the diameter of the holder at the point where the swinging end portion of the said sustaining device engages the said holder. When the wire-supporting or sustaining device is in the position as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 7 the points a and Z) thereof are located beyond a horizontal central plane through the cigarette holder, and in consequence thereof the said sustaining device is retained in position shown in dotted lines until it may be desired to use the same in the manner as shown in Fig.7.
It will be seen that by my invention I have provided a simple means whereby cigarettes may be supported at their middle portions and ignited at both ends, whereby smoke may be drawn by the smoker from both ends simultaneously.
It will be noted also that the holder, especially when a cigarette is mounted thereon, presents somewhat the appea mice or design of an aeroplane being thereby rendered especially attractive.
Although in the specification I have referred to the holder as being adapted for holding cigarettes while the latter are smoked, it will be understood that the holder is likewise adapted for holding small cigars or cigars of a size to permit the mounting thereof either in the notch 5, shown in the holder illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 and 7, or in the passageway 25 shown in the holder illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
