Description

DOOR HOLDER Filed Feb. 26, 1930 G. L. FULLER Illlll lnnlmmg u Patented May 12, 1931 PATEN QFQE GEORGE L. FULLER, OF ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA DOOR HOLDER Application filed February 26, 1930, Serial No. 431,571.
This invention relates to a door stop adapted to hold a door, swinging window or like closure, in open position, and which is simple in construction and convenient in operation.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the invention applied to a door and door frame. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail plan and elevations, respectively, partly broken away to show some parts concealed in the other views.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a portion of a door hinged to the jamb 18 of the door frame. Attached to the door, near the top thereof, as by screws 14, is a sheet metal bracket 15 having an inclined part extending outward from the door and comprising a depending fiange 16 through which and the back portion of said inclined part extends a bolt 17. Said bolt 17 passes through a latch 18 and serves as a pivot for said latch which, when the door is open, extends toward the door frame and is provided near its free end with a notch 19. Attached to the lintel 20 of the door frame is a sheet metal keeper bracket 21 of angular form so that it projects outward from said lintel, and so that the notch 19, when the door is opened, can he brought into register with a portion of said bracket 21.
Coiled around the bolt 17 is a torsionallyacting spring 22 the ends of which engage, respectively, the inner wall of the top portion of the bracket 15, and the bottom of the trough-like sheet metal latch 18 in such a manner as tohave a tendency to lift the free end of said latch toward the bracket 21, or toward the lintel of the door frame. Thus when the door is being moved to opened position engagement of the latch with the lower side of the lintel will depress the outer end of said latch against the stress of the spring 22 until the door has been opened far enough so that the notch 19 in the said latch comes into register with the outwardly extending inclined part of the bracket 21 when the said latch 18 will be lifted by said spring and will cause the notched portion of said latch to engage said bracket and thus positively hold the door in opened position.
Attached to the latch 18, between its pivotal point and free end, is a pull-down device 23 which may be simply a cord, wire or chain,
and by means of which said latch may be lowered to disengage its notch from the bracket 21 to enable the door to be closed.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a holder which is simple in construction and positive and convenient in operation in holding a door, swinging window or like closure, open, and which holder can be readily released when it is desired to close the door or other closure.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A holder for a swinging door comprising a sheet metal bracket adapted to be attached to the top portion of the door, a trough-like sheet metal latch pivoted to said bracket and provided near its free end with a notch, a spring coiled around the pivot of said latch and adapted to lift said free end of said latch,
a sheet-metal bracket to be attached to a frame part for said door and adapted to be engaged by the notched part of said latch, when said door is opened, and a pull-down member for releasing said latch when desired.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE L. FULLER.
