DOORSTOIP LATCH.
Application filed .Tune 4,
My invention relates to door stops 0r holders, designed to lock or secure the door in open position so as to prevent it being accident-ally closed by wind or otherwise.
The object is to provide a latch door holder or stop of the character mentioned which may be made at small cost, and readily applied without necessarily employing skilled labor and which will be elicient for the purposes in view.
'To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features herein illustrated and described, and then sought toV be clearly defined by the claims, references being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of part of a barn, gara-ge, or other building, with one door closed and another partially opened, showing the present invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a perspective view, enlarged scale, showing the position of the stop or holder with a doorpartially opened;
Figure 3 is a plan view of anotherform of stop or holder. Y
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the upper 'portion of a barn, garage, or other structure, 2 doors thereof, and 3 door-hinges. The latch holder or stop comprises a member or bar 4: formed with a bow-member 5 formed with teeth 6 along its lower edge, one side of which is beveled or inclined as at a and the other side preferably straight as at b, the spaces between the teeth being substantially the width of the thickness of the door so as to receive the top edgeof the door and hold the door by the teeth adjacent therete when the door is opened orl partially opened, as illustrated in Fig. 2 and at the right of Fig. 1 of the drawing.l rIhe base member or bar 4c is provided with a suitable hinge by which it may be attached to the door frame of the building as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The hinge preferably comprises a knuckle 7 preferably formed integral with the bar and a leaf member 8 having knuckles 9, and a pintle 1() passed through the knuckles as illustrated.
The latch stop hinged to the door frame as mentioned is free to rise and fall as the door is swung into open position, the edge of the door striking against the inclined side of the teeth will lift the latch which may then drop 1928. Serial No. 282,779..
by gravity to receive the edge of the door and hold it in its open position as illustrated, and prevent it from being accidentally closed by wind or otherwise. When the door is to be closed, the latch may be raised by suitable means, say by a cable 11 which will be connected at one end to the latch and passed over a pulley 12 and then down to within easy reach of an individual desiring to operate the door. 'By producing a hook (not shown) at an appropriate part of ythe door or its frame, the free end of the cable may be connected thereto so as to retain the latch in its raised position if desired.
Under the construction described, the latch will be automatically released as the door is swung open and it will be held in raised or unlatched position as the door is being swung into closed position. To prevent defacing the door by the latch, the door may be provided with a metal facing along the portion where it will be engaged by the latch, such facing being aorded by la metalplate or plates 13 attached to, or set into the door, at one or both facings, as illustrated.
It is preferred to form the base or bar 4 and bow-member 5 in one piece as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, but the bow-member and bar may be made of separate pieces and riveted or otherwise connected together as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The latch stop illustrated and described may be used with double doors as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, byA use of two of the latches, or with a single door, opening to the right or to the left by use of a single latch as will be obvious from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawing. In either case, a person using a garage may have the door held in open position while driving in or out of the garage without being annoyed by the door swinging into closed position by wind, or otherwise. The latch is also comparatively inexpensive to construct, and conveniently operated, and can be applied without employment of a skilled mechanic or workman.
I have illustrated and described the preferred details of parts, but changes can be made therein without departing from the essential features of the invention as soughtto be defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention, and set forth its merits, what I claim is r- 1. A door latch comprising a hinged memthe door-open, the opposite side of the teethbeing formed as a shoulder to constitute a stop to prevent the door closing until the hinged member is manually raised.
attachment to a door frame and provided with a bowed member having teeth along one edge for engagement with the opposite faces of the door along one edge thereof when in opened position, said teeth having one side beveled for automatic lifting of the latch by engagement ofthe door with the beveled side of the teeth in swinging the door to open position, the opposite side of the teeth being formed 'as a shoulder to constitute a stop to prevent the door closing until the hinged bar is manually raised and means for disengagement of the latch with the door when the door is to be closed.
3. The combination Y with a door, of a hinged latch memberhaving teeth along its lower edge, the teeth having a beveled side for engagement of the edge of the door Y therewith in swinging the door to open posi- 2. A door latch comprising a hinged bar for tion, the opposite side of the teeth being formed as a shoulder to! constitute a. stop to prevent the door closing until the hinged latch member is manually lifted, a protecting facing-plate on the face of the door to protect the door from defacement by en` gagement of the teeth therewith, the latch member being' lifted by engagement of the door edge with the beveled side of the teeth in swinging the door.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LONNIE o. iLE.
