rice GAS DISTRIBUTION APAB-ATUS Application flier-1 February 23,1929. Serial No. 342,006.
The present invention relates to a combined gas collecting member and vent and has for its prime ob ect to'collect gastravellin alon the outside of a as )i )e leadin b b CD 21) Another very important object of the in- V vention resides in the provision of an improved structure of this nature which is 2 exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is de signed.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: .Figure 1 is a side elevation of the construction embodying the features of'my invention showing the same in use,
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is another end elevation thereof opposite to that taken in Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view therethrough taken substantially on the line H of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the letter T denotes generally a gas collecting member including a frustoconical body 5 flared outwardly at the larger end thereof as is indicated at 6 and having the smaller endthereof closed by a plate 7. A. foot 8 is formed at'the larger end of the body 5 to rest on the ground and a flange 9 is disposed. about the body adjacent the smaller end thereof to form a leg for supporting this" end and also for forming a baffle. A nipple 10 is formed integrally on' the smaller end of the body 5 to radiate outwardly therefrom and to'allow the escape of gas upwardly therefrom. r
A vent pipe 11 is engaged with the nipple 10 by means of a union 12 or in any other suitable manner and this vent pipe extends up through the ground terminating in the atmosphere. A gas conduit let extends through the plate 7 and terminates at one end a Spaced istance from the larger'end of the body 5. A screen 15 is formed in the body 5 about the conduit 14. It is preferable to provide a block or the like 17 in the ground, although this is not necessary, on which the foot 8 and the flange 9 rests. A gas pipe 18 leading fromthe gas main 19 is coupled with the end ofthe conduit 14 within the body by means of a union 20 or the like. I A plpe 20 is coupled with the outer end of the conduit 14 by means of a union 21 or the like and. leads through the wall 22 of a dwelling, house or the'like-to furnish gas for the usual well known purposes. Now from the above detailed description t will be seen that should any gas be pass-- 111g along the surface of the gas main 19 and travel along the outside surface of the gas pipe 18 said gas will be trapped inthe gas collecting member T and will be allowed to escape out through the nipple 10 and pipe 11 to the atmosphere rather than to continue on into the dwelling. It will also be seen that the flange 9 functions as a battle to defiect any gas which may be clinging alon w the outer surface of the body 5. b The screen 15 prevents the gas collecting member from filling with dirt when the ditch in which the piping and gas collecting member and the like are placed has been filled in.
I appreciate that I am not the first in the art to provide a device having the same gen- 'eral characteristics as that thus far described but I claim certain detail structural features and improvements to enhance the efficiency, reliability, simplicity and durability of the structure.
The present embodiment of the invention ias been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the abov description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed .or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is:
A gas distribution system including in combination; a gas distributing main, a gas collecting member formed from a frustoconical body having its smaller end closed by a plate and its larger end opened and flared outwardly, a foot on the periphery of the larger end of said body, a flange on the outside of said body at the smaller end thereof, said flange and said foot functioning as supporting means, a gas conduit connected to'the distributing main and extending through said gas collecting member, a screen disposed at the larger end of said body and surrounding said conduit, and a vent pipe for leaking gas rising from the body in communication with the interior thereof adjacent the smaller end of said body.
In testimony whereof I afiii; my signature.
JOSEPH F. SULLIVAN.
