METHOD OF ROLLING METALS AND APPARATUS THEREFOR Filed Dec. 51, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 12, 1931 UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE v KARL ximrus, or loam-manna. GERMANY METHOD or nonnme mn'rnnsm arrnna'rcs rumor,
Application filed December 31, 1925, Serial No. 78,618, and in Germany January 7, 1825.
In rolling section iron with an undercutsection member, more particularly in producing channels, the production of an exact "channel is/diflicult, because with the customary method with plain guides a wavy channel L results longitudinally of thebar. In consequence of this the channel iron is unusable in cases where an exact fit or tight joint is required. I
The invention obviates these disadvantages by the provision of .special guides which are constructed in such way that before the bar enters or after it leaves the pass, the foot of the bar to be rolled is gradually rolled inward.
Further the foot, which has to be turned over, is somewhat thinned down at the folding place so that'the fold must occur just at this i) In the drawings the new method is shown by way of example applied toiron frames for glass roofs.
There is shown in Fig. 1 the cross-section of a completed iron frame; in Fi 2 the crosssection of the iron prior to the formation of the channel; in Fig. 3 a further detail; in Fig.
4 the guide in longitudinal section 4-4 of n Fig. 5; in Fig. 5 a cross-section 5-5 of Fig. 4 through the guide; in Fig. 6 the guide in plan. In Fig.1 a is the completed iron frame, in which the glass sheet 6 is held by means of screwed dogs a and flat washers d between felt or lead strips 6. It is seen from Fig. 2
that the'section up to this point can be easily formed by means of rolling. If according to Fig. 3 the foot is thinned at f or alternatively thickened at g, the rim It will fold at 7. However this measure alone is not suflicient to produce a satisfactory joint. Only if in the guide 1 Figs. 4 to 6,there is introduced a special guiding fillet can a joint satisfying all requirements be obtained. The operation of the guide attached like a stripping guide is as follows. The bar previously rolled ac-- cording, to Fig. 3 passes between the rolls 0 and enters the guide in th'e direction of the "arrow, when the twist effects a gradual folding; of the into the desired position.
Then therim passes'gradually behind the pro- 1 j'ectin-of the fillet Z'projecting. into the guide,
whicliforces foot of the iron to form with the greatest possible accuracy a channel satisfying all requirements.
According to thenature of the use to which the channel iron is to be put, it is also possib e, for example, if no special accuracy of the "channel is required, to use one or the other method alone. Furthermore, the scope of the use is unlimited. For example, it can also be used for the so-called interlockin of grooved and tongued sheet-piling and simi- 0;, lar joints. The guide may be passed as well by the channel iron after it has left the rolls. Havin now fully described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y I 1. A method of rolling iron sections, con
sisting in rolling the section to approximate structural form to provide'a body and a thinnedportion and a thicker rim' portion,
drawing the section through a guide provided with a twist before the section passes through thinned portion and a thicker rim portion,
drawing the section through a guide provided with a twist 'before the section passes through the finishing rolls to bend the rim only to overlie the thinned portion independently of the rolls. .1 p
3. A method of rolling iron sections, consisting in rblling the section to approximate structural form to provide a body and a thinned portion and a thicker rim portion, drawin the section through a guide provided with a fillet before the section passes through the finishing rolls, said fillet being provided with a projection into the guide to bend the rim only to overlie the thinned portion.
4. Apparatus for rolling iron sections with undercut section members, including a set of rolls, a ide in advance of the rolls provided with a fillet for impartinga twist to the rim portion only of a section passing through the ro 15am guide.
. 5. Apparatus for rolling iron sections with undercut sectionmembers,,including a set of rolls, a guide in advance of the rolls provided with a fillet having a projection adapted to bend the rim only of a rim of a section, said guide bending the section independently of e rolls.
'1 6. Apperatusfor rolling iron sections with undercut section members, including rolls to shape a. secti "n to approximate structural form to provi e a body and a thinned portion a. d a, thicker rim portion, finishing rolls, and
a guide intermediate the first and second mentioned rolls to bend the rim only to overlie the thi' ned portion of the section.
