Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE,
JEREMIAH BARNHART, OF RETREAT, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,447, dated August 1,1876; application filed v March 6, 1876.
- o c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved wagonbody, that may be taken to pieces to be readily stored away; and it consists of the sideboards of the body hinged to the longitudinally-divided halves of its bottom, to be locked by strap-bolts and keys of the end-gates, and by lateral bottom bars keyed to stirrups of the side-boards.
In the drawing, A are the side-boards, and B the longitudinally-divided bottom sections, which are hinged to the sides, to be folded together when the end-gates are detached. The end-gates U slide in guide-strips ot' the sideboards, and bind by bent top bars a on the top andoutside of the sides A. The end-gates O are provided with central strap-bolts I), that pass through recesses and perforations of the top and bottom slats E of the bottom sections, to be looked at the under side by spring-keys b. The bottom sections B are further rigidly locked to each other and to the side-boards by one or more lateral bottom bars, F, that are inserted into stirru s F of the side-boards and held therein by spring-keys e, passing vertically through the ends of the bars.
. When the wagon-body is desired to be taken apartfor folding up and storing away, the keys of the lock-bar are first drawn out, which allows the removing of the lock-bar. The keys of the end-gates are then taken out and the end-gates withdrawn, which leaves the bottom' sections and side-boards free to fold or detach.
The wagon-body is put together again by reversingthe operation described, forming thus a simple and convenient arrangement for storing and shipping wagon-bodies in a compact and small space.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The end-gates 0, having central strapbolts D and clutches .a, in combination with the hinged bottom B B and retaining-pin b, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified. I
2. The wagon-body herein described, consisting of the longitudinally-divided bottom B B, hinged side pieces A, having stirrups F, end-gates 0, having central bolts D and clutches a, and bar F, all combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
