STRIKING CASTING Filed Nov. 14I 1925 mil... mum
flanges being formed similarly to the flanges 11 around the slots 9., rll`lie danges 11 and 12 are preferably joined by connecting flanges or webs 13 for increasing the abutment strength of the corresponding ends of the slots and rigidifying the cheek plates at these points The rear ends of the flanges l2 around the second or inner slots 1()` are preferably reinforced by tapering flange portions 14 extendin diagonally upward and downward from te ends of the flanges 12, with the extreme inner rear portions thereof on the inner sides of the cheek plates curved around and filling the extreme inner ends of the slots 4 in the center sills, thereby increasing the strength -of connection between said cheek plates and sills.
The forward ends of the cheek plates 7 are extended beyond the ends of the center' sills, as indicated at 15, said extensions being formed at their upper ends with substantially horizontal flange or web portions 16 and substantially vertical or upright flange or web portions 17, forming a seat or abutment for a top member 18, serving for connecting the upper outer ends of said cheek plates and adapted to function as a striking casting. ln the present embodiment,
the striking casting 13 is provided with a.
striking web or face 19 which is increased in thickness slightly toward the central or intermediate ortion thereof and a rearwardly exten ing shelf or web portion 20 which is preferably horizontall and the upper surface of which, when assembled, is
preferably flush with the upper surfaces of` the upper flanges 3 of the center sills and is adapted for extending vbeneath the center sill cover plate 21 and end sill 22 for suitable connection therewith. Extending rearwardly from the lower edge of the striking portion 19 is a web portion 23 defining the upper edge of the opening 24 for the reception ofthe stem of the coupler 25., For bracing the webs 19, 20 and 23, a plurality of webs 2G are preferably provided there between said webs 2G preferably extending longitudinally and tapering from the inner edge of the web 23 to finally merge with the shelf portion 20 adjacent the inner edge thereof. At its outer ends, the striking casting 18 is preferably provided with a vertical flange or web portion 27 registering withv and adapted for connection with the flange portions 17 of the cheek plates by rivets 28 and with substantially horizontall flange or web portions 29 overlying and adapted for connection with the flange portions 16 of the cheek plates by rivets 30.
The cheek plates 7 are preferably formed at their extreme outer ends with fiangesor webs 31 flush with the adjacent portions of the' striking web 19 of the striking casting 18 and serving as continuations thereof, the inwardly extending sections 32 of which serve to define the-side edges of the opening 24 beneath said striking casting.
Positioned between the extreme outer portions of the cheek plates 7 and supported on inwardly extending fianges 33 provided on lsaid cheek plates, is a coupler carrier iron termediate portion, as illustrated inFigure 1 particularly, for increasing the bearing surface provided for the coupler stem. At
the ends of said member, depending web portions 37 are preferably provided and are -adapted to rest on the inwardly extending anges 33 of the cheek plates for supporting the carrier iron 34. For preventing displacement ,of the carrier iron 34 from the flanges 33, a bolt or other connecting means 38 is preferably provided extending through Acorres onding apertures in the carrier iron 34 an cheek plates 7 and prevented from undesired removal by a nut 39.
`The extreme outer ends of the cheek plate slot flange portions 11 may, if desired, be reinforced by tapering webs 40 extending between the same and the outwardly extendingportions of the danges 31. rllhe flanges or webs 16 and 17 on said cheek plates and particularly the junction between said flanges or webs may be reinforced with respect to the main web of each cheek plate by depending web or gusset portions 41. rlhe upper portions of the webs or fianges 17 may likewise be reinforced by web or gusset portions 42 extending along the upper edges of the cheek plates rearwardly of said flange portions 172 1n accordance with the foregoing disclosure, it will be apparent that ll have devised draft members adapted for association with the center sills of. a car and for association with each other so that, when connected together in assembled relation, they are adapted to function substantially as if they were a combined casting, provided with cheek plates, striking and carrier iron portions. An advantage of not making the aforedescribed portions integral but rather as four pieces, that is, two cheek plates, one striking casting andone carrier iron, resides in the fact that said members may be much more readily cast individually than a conibined member embodying the same.
Having now described my invention., what l claim is:
1. ln combination with the center sills of a car, slotted cheek plates connected to said center sills and provided with portions extending beyond the ends of said sills and a separate striking casting connected to said extensions and formed with a shelf extending 4rearwardly between said -sills for connection with said cover plate, and a carr'ier iron supported between said extensions.
3. In combination with the center sills of a. car, slotted cheek plates connected to said sills and provided with portions extendin beyond the Asill ends,l a separately forme striking casting connected to said extensions and formed with an upright striking face, said extensions on the cheek plates being provided with front flan es forming continuations of the striking ace of the striking casting. i
4. Incombination with the center sills of a car, slotted cheek plates connected to said sills and provided with portions extending beyond the sill ends, said portions being formed with outwardly extending substantially horizontal flanges and outwardly extending substantially vertical flanges and a striking casting formed with corresponding flange portions at the ends thereof riveted to said horizontal and vertical flanges.
5. In combination with the center sills of a car, said center sills being formed with slots extending to the ends thereof, cheek plates connected on thel outside thereof and` provided with slots registering with the center sill slots and anges bordering said slots and engaging the center sill slots, portions of said cheek plates extending beyond the ends of the sills and a striking casting connected to saidV extensions.
6. YIn combination with the center sills of a car, double slotted cheek plates connected key, adapted for connection to an associated center sill 'and provided with a portion adapted to extend beyond the adjacent end `of said sill, and formed with means for supporting a,coupler carrier, said extension being notched for the reception and support of an associated striking cas-ting and formed with a front fiange acting as a continuation of the striking .face of saidcasting.
8. A combined cheek plate and coupler carrier support slotted for receiving a draft .key and adapted for connection to an associated'center sill, said cheek plate also being formed with a portion adapted to extend beyond the end of said sill, said cheek plate being formed with an outwardly extending substantially horizontal flange and an outwardly extending substantially vertical flange adapted to receive an associated striking casting in the angle formed therebetween for connection therewith.
9. A combined cheek plate and coupler carrier support adapted for connection on the outside of an associated center sill and provided with slots registering with corresponding slots in said sill and flanges bordering said slots for engaging the center sill slots, a portion of said cheek plate being adapted to extend beyond the end of the associated sill and formed with angularly disposed walls pr'ovidlng a pocket for the reception and connection of the adjacent end of an associated striking casting.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
