This invention'relates to new and useful improvements in portemonnaies, pocketbooks and the like, and more particularly it pertains to such devices known as ladies hand bags.

' It is an object of the invention to improve the construction of ladies hand bags, and to provide a novel construction of coin purse for use in connection therewith.

Heretofore in ladies hand bags, coin to construct a hand bag and coin purse, that the coin'purse may be permanently attached to the hand bag without causing a bulky or unduly thick article.

Another feature of the invention resides in a novel construction of hand bag partition, which novel construction permits of the attachment of a coin purse thereto without detracting from the general flat appearance of the bag. 1

Other features of the invention reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the advantages of which will be readily understood and ap preciated by those skilled in the art.

The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention and from the following detailed description of the constructions therein shown.

Referring to the drawings by reference character, 10 designates the body of the bag which is formed with bellows or pleated ends such as 11, and is adapted to be closed by a closing flap 12 as in the ordinary manner.

The bag body 10 has a partition 11' eX- tendinglongitudinally thereof and dividing the bag into two compartments there being one on each side of said partition. Carried by the partition 11, there is a coin purse 14 and in the present embodiment of the invention, this coin purse has a metal frame 15 provided with clasps or the like 16 which interengage in order to hold the coin purse in closed position.

As will be noted by reference to the drawings, the coin purse is carried by the partition llin such a manner that when the coin purse is closed, it is in longitudinal alinement with said partition, and does not project upon either side thereof as is the case in the ordinary construction of hand bags in which a tion.

In order to obtain this effect, the partition 11 is notched as at 18, and the forma tion of said notches 18 provides projecting tongue like sections 20 of which there are in the present illustration of the invention, two.

As illustrated in Figure 2, the coin purse 14 comprises a body portion 21 and the partition 11 consists of two panel like members 22 and 23, and the bodyof the coin purse 14 is secured or positioned between the panel like members 22 and 5230f said partition and is secured in such position by clamping the free edges of'the tongue like sections 20 within the metal frame 15 of the coin purse, the tonguelike sections being formed of a size and shape which conforms'to that of the metal frame of the coin purse.

By this construction it will be apparent that the coin purse is positioned between the ends of the space formed by the notches 18 or rather by their end walls, and that there coin'purse is secured to the partiis, due to the angular position of the end walls of the notches 18, a space such as 26 between the ends of the coin purse and the outer walls of the notches 18.

The aforementioned construction provides a hand bag and coin purse in which the coin purse may be permanently attached to the hand bag, and yet, due to the fact that the coin purse is positioned between the panels of the hand bag partition, the hand bag is not of a bulky or unduly thick character.

The partition 11 may consist of two relatively flat members sewed together and provided in one edge with the notches 18 heretofore referred to. However, I prefer to form the partition 11 from a single piece of material folded intermediate upon its end as indicated at 27 in Figure 3 to provide the two panel members 22 and 23, the partition being preferably secured within the hand bag with its folded edge 27 positionedupwardly. The notches 18 may be formed be fore the member which forms the partition has been folded, or they may be formed afterwards as desired.

A partition constructed in accordance with the present invention presents a neat appearance, and the folded over edge 27 which forms the top edge of the partition, presents a smooth edge which will not fray and become unattractive in use.

lVhile in the present embodiment of the invention, a coin purse having a metal frame such as 15 has been described and shown, it is obvious that the invention is not dependent upon such a coin purse, and that the coin purse may be of a type formed without a metal frame in which instance, instead of the free edge of each of the tongue like sections 20 being secured beneath a metal frame, they would be sewed to the two sides of the coin purse opening after which they may be finished off in any desired manner.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a novel form of combined hand bag and coin purse in which the coin purse does not add to the bulkiness of the bag and therefore detract from its general appearance which is a highly important feature in hand bags of the so called fiat type. The invention has been herein illustrated in its preferred form, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated, and that it may be practiced in other forms as rightfully fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:

1. In a hand bag, a two part partition having a notched or cut out portion in its upper edge, and a coin purse carried by said partition and mounted between the two parts thereof and between the ends of said notched or cut out portion.

2. In a hand bag, a two part partition having a notched or cut out portion in its upper edge, and a coin purse carried by said partition and mounted between the two parts thereof between the ends of said notched or cut out portion, said coin purse being shorter than said partition.

3. In a hand bag, a partition comprising panel like members secured together, said partition having a notched or cut out portion in its upper edge, and a coin purse secured between the panel like members, with its open side positioned between the ends of the cut out portion of said partition.

4. In a hand bag, a two part partition having an opening in its upper edge, and a coin purse mounted between the two parts of said partition and in the opening of said partition, said coin purse being shorter than the length of said opening.

5. I a hand bag, a partition comprising two panel like members secure-d together in face to face relation, and having free edges along a portion of the upper edge of said partition, and acoin purse mounted between said panel members and secured thereto along the free edges thereof.

6. In a hand bag, a partition, a pair of spaced notches in the upper edge of said partition, a pair of tongue like sections projecting from between said spaced notches, and a coin purse secured between said projecting tongue like sections.

7 In a hand bag, a partition, a pair of spaced notches in the upper edge of said partition, a pair of tongue like sections projecting from between said spaced notches, and a coin purse secured between said projecting tongue like sections, each end of said coin purse being spaced from the outer edge of its respective notch.
