This invention relates to improvements in inking rollers for printing presses and particularly to an improved shaft construction for such rollers.
The rollers in common use on what are known as job presses comprise a steel shaft on which is cast a. resilient roller, the roller being a glue-gelatine composition or specially prepared rubber. Slidably received on the ends of the roller shaft are guide rollers which operate on guides or roller-ways at struck from the shaft itself are soon worn or broken off and the shaft rendered useless.
It is the object of my invention to provide a shaft construction which includes a removable key of a particular form which may be readily replaced when worn so that the shaft of the roller may be used indefinitely.
A further object is to provide a key which may be held in place by the roller which is cast thereabout, and onto which the guide roller is easily engaged or disengaged.
A still further object is to provide an ink ing roller with a shaft having shoulders against which the guide rollers abut to properly space them,,such shoulders being more permanent than the eXpedients heretofore used for that purpose.

In describing my invention, reference will be had'to the accompanying drawing wherein like parts in the several views are indicated by like reference numerals; and in which 10 designates generally the'inking roller of an ordinary job-press. The roller includes a steel shaft 11 with the ordinary composition or rubber roller 12 cast thereon. At each end the shaftll is reduced as at 13 to provide a shoulder la against which the guide roller 15 of the roller truck engages to position them in proper relation to the. guide rails 16011 which they are adapted to rollv To prevent rotation ofthe guide roller on the shaft end 13 a key 17 is provided over which the roller, which is provided with a key-wayl8, engages. y e
To receive the key 17 which is of a peculiar constructionparticularly suitable for use on printing rollers, theshaft 11 is provided with akey-wa'y20 at each end adjacent th'e'shoulders. 14, the key-way being-cut for the most part in the largepart of the shaft. The shaft is also provided with two parallel apertures 21 and 22, oneextending through the shaft from the bottom of th'e key-way 20' while the other extends-through the reduced end of the shaft and at a short distance from the shoulder 14.
The key 17 has integral lugs or projections '24 and 25 extending laterally therefrom and spaced to fit in the apertures 21 and 22 respectively when the key 17 engages in the key-way 20. It will be noted that the outer H end of'the key 1( extends out of the key-way 20 and the side edgesof the inner portion of the key .17 fit within the ,keyway. I claim is: I
1. In a printing roller, a shaft having a reduced end providin a shoulder and a keyway in the larger portion of the shaft cutting a said shoulder, the smaller portion of the shaft 75 having a diametrically disposed aperture 1 therethrough, one end being in alignment with said key-way, anda key received in said key-way and having a lateral projection res ceived in said aperture,said' shaft having I 80 thereon a relatively thick covering of gum rubber, said key being partially covered by said layer of rubber.

In a printing roller, a shaft having a reduced end providing a shoulder and a keyway in the larger portion cutting said shoulder, said shaft having an aperture extending from the bottom of said key-way diametrically therethrough, the smaller end of said 25 shaft having an aperture extending diametriv I cally therethrough, one end of which is in alignment with said key-way, and a key having one end received in said key-way and having lateral projections received in said 30 apertures for the purpose described, said I shaft having thereon a relatively thick covering of gum rubber, said key being partially covered by said layer of rubber. 3.
