AAMonT, or ALEXANDER, NORTH DAKOTA GUARD Application filed May 16, 1928, Serial My present invention has reference to a finger guard for harvesters, mowing machines and the like and my primary object is the provision of a finger guard having a ledger plate over which the cutter bar is reciprocated and which plate is of such construction and arrangement that the same may be easily, quickly and securely attached to the body of the finger guard and likewise easily removed therefrom should the same become broken, or for sharpening and replacement.

A further object is the provision of a ledger plate for the guard fingers of harl5 vesters, mowing machines and the like, which is rust proof and which has 1ts forward edge received in a pocket in the guard finger, its

rear and widened edge formed with a benda ble tongue to be received against the inclined wall of a pocket or opening provided in the body of the guard finger; its edges, to the rear of the teeth thereon, beveled or inclined to be received in inclined recesses provided in the shoulders of the lateral extensions of the guard finger and whereby thewedging of the bendable tongue into the pocket will impart a longitudinal movement to the finger with my improved ledger plate in applied position thereon, parts being broken 'away and parts in section.

Referring now to the drawings, the -n umen-a l .1 designates the outer end or body of the guard finger of the usual-construction, "2 the rear portion thereof'whieh' is attached to the nsua l stationary support. The outer p'ortion :of the body, at the top thereof, is formed with the usual rearwardly inclined guard extension' -3, there being a shoulder 4, between the upperface or flat ledge 5'ofthe body and said extension, and this shoulder is centrally formed 'with'a-pocket -6 in a'line with the ledge surface 5. The confronting faces of these shoulders arecu t at inward angles,'and the beveled walls 8 thus provided are disposed at inclinations, being directed-toward the-pointedend-of the body 1. The body 1, atashortdistanee inwardly of the rear of the fiat ledge surface 5 has a round opening 7 therethrough which is indicated by the numeral 9. The rear wall, at the upper portion of this opening is beveled, as at 10.

A ledger plate, in accordance with this invention is indicated in the drawings by the numeral 11. The ledger plate has its forward and reduced end formed with a tongue 12 to be received in the pocket 6. The ledger plate hasits edges inclined from its forward end toits rear end and these edges are provided with teeth 13. To the rear ofthe teeth the edges of the ledger plate, at the widened end 7 thereof, are formed with non-toothed downwardly inclined walls 14, and the said ledger plate from itssaid rear end is formed with 9 two slits that provide therebetween a centrally arranged bendable tongue 15. When the ledgerplate is arranged upon the ledge surface the beveled corners 1e thereof are loosely received between the beveled or inclined Walls provided by the recessed shoulders onthe lateral extensions 7. A punch is 1 arranged against the tongue 15, and is sub j ected to a force of'iinpact of a hammer or the like so that the tongue will be bent downm0 wardly in the opening 9 and the outer edge thereof will contact with the angle wall 10 provided at the rear of said opening. This it will be noted will impart a bodily longitudinal movement to the ledger plate 11, forcing the beveled corners 14 thereof into tight frictional engagement with the beveled or in: clined walls 8 and thereby easilyand effectively securing the ledger plate on the guard finger. When the ledger plate is to be removed the punch is arranged in the opening 9, but is passed through the rear or bottom face of the body 1 and is again subjected to an impact of force, so that the tongue will be brought out of frictional contact with the angle wall 10,, which permits of the ledger plate being readily slid off of the ledge surface 5 of the guard plate.

- Having described the invention, I claim:

A guard and a ledger plate, said guard havingits ledge surface at the rear thereof formed with lateral extensions whose con.- fronting faces are beveled and provided with an opening therethrough arranged centrally between'the confronting faces of the extensions and the rear wall provided by the opening and adjacent to the ledge surface being inclined, the ledger plate having its forward end interengaging With the finger guard, its

rear corners provided with reduced beveled portions to be received in the beveled confronting faces of the extensions and. its center, at the rear thereof slit-ted longitudinally at spaced points to provide a bendable finger therebetween and which finger is designed to be bent into the opening and to contact with the rear inclined wall thereof.
