Description

A. STONER.
SCREW-DRIVER.
Patented. July 25, 1876;
TED STATES P'IENT FFLGE.
AUGUSTUS STONER, OF JERSEY OITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREW-DRIVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 180 284., dated July 25, 1876 application filed May 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS STONER, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Screw-Drivers and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
A double-ended screw driver, made of a metal plate, has been connected to a separate handle, so that either end of the instrument can be used; but 'a screw-driver of this character is not adapted to being carried about the person, because the handle is bulky.
My invention forms a new article of manufacture, and, as distinguished from the devices before -made, consists in a double-ended screwdriver and handle of a flat plate of metal, the handle being formed by an increased width of the metal about midway between the ends of the screw-driver.
By. this construction the double-ended screwdriver and handle are flat, and can be carried in the pocket, or between the leaves of a memorandum-book; and there is but little expense in making the same, because the whole instrument can either be cast or cut out of sheet metal.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an edge view of the improved screw-driver. Fig. 2 is a view of the same at right angles to Fig. 1; and Fig.
3 is a similar view, with a handle of difi'erent shape to that in Fig. 2.
The double-ended screw-driver and handle,
made in one piece as aforesaid, is provided with the blades a b, with the beveled driving ends, as usual, one of which may be larger than the other, as shown, and the handle 0 is formed by the plate of metal being sufficiently wide' about midway between the driving ends of the instrument.
The shape of this enlargement is to be such as to afl'ord an easy grasp for the hand- I have shown it with rounded bows, and one or more openings may bemade in the handle AUG. STONER. Witnesses:
GEO. T. PINOKNEY, OHAs. H. S ITH.
