This invention relates to scissors, one of the objects being to provide a. device of this character the blades of which can be readily detached, there being means combined with fthe blades for holding the cutting edges thereof close together throughout their lengths during the shearing operation.
A still further object is to provide means for limiting the relative pivotal movement 19 of the blades.
A still further object is to provide a means whereby an increased leverage on one of the blades can be obtained.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invent-ion.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the scissors properly assembled.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bottom blade, some of the parts thereon being shown in section.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the scissors. Figure 4 is a plan view of the connected portions of the blades, said blades being 5 moved to extreme open positions.
Figure 5 is a sect-ion of line 55, Figure 1. Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6, Figure 1. .Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the bottom blade of the scissors which extends from a flat hearing member 2. A handle 3 is extended in the opposite direction from this bearing memher and terminates in a loop 4 for receiving the thumb of the hand operating the scissors. The bearing portion 2 has a central stud 5 and formed in one edge of the bearing member adjacent to the end 3 is a notch 6. A stop shoulder 7 is formed on the bearing member adjacent to the blade and that por- 50 tion of the edge of the bearing member between notch 6 and shoulder 7 is substantially concentric with the stud 5 as shown at 8 and extends from the outer end of notch 6 to the inner end of shoulder 7.
A small plate 9 is riveted or otherwise at tached to the bottom of the bearing portion 2 and projects beyond one edge of said portionso as to be engaged adjustably by a retalnlng screw 10 which is located substantially directly opposite shoulder 7.
The top blade 11 of the scissors is extended from a bearing portion 12 having a fiat face adapted to slidably engage the fiat face of the bearing portion 2. This portion 12 has an opening 13 for thereceptionof stud 5.
A yoke 1 1 straddles the corresponding edges of the portions 2 and 12 at one side of the scissors and has an elongated arm 15 which is turned into the portion 12 and upset or otherwise'fastened therein as shown at 16 in Figure 6. The free end 17 of the yoke 1 1 is so proportioned that, when brought to position under notch 6, it can be withdrawn upwardly therethrough.
That edge of the portion 12 nearest the screw 10 has a notch 18 adjacent to the handle 19 which extends from the bearing portion 12. A shoulder 20 is also formed on the same side of the bearing portion 12 and that portion-of the side edge between the notch 18 and the inner end of shoulder 20 is substantially concentric with the opening 13 as shown at 21. e
The parts are so proportioned that when the bearing portion 12 is rotated on stud 5 to bring the finger or short end 17 of yoke 14 beneath notch 6 the notch 18 will be brought to position'unde'r the head of the screw 10. Thus, as shown in Figure 4, the bearing portion 12 of blade 11 can be lifted off of the stud. By replacing these parts in the position shown in Figure 4 and then swinging blades 1 and 11 toward each other the end 17 will ride under the adjacent edge of bearing portion 2 until it comes against the shoulder 7 and at the same time the head of screw lt) will ride onto the adjacent side 21 of the bearing portion 12. Thus the parts will be brought to the position shown in Figure 1.
That part of the bearing portion 2 between the notch 6 and shoulder 7 can be made with moved away from the notches during the its outer surface shghtly inclined as shown at closing of the blades.
22 so as to form a cam surface for engagement by the finger 17 forming one end yoke 14;. Thus, as the blades are moved toward each other, said finger will ride along the inclined surface at 22 and gradually take up play between the bearing portions 2 and 12 so that a slight transverse tilting of the blades 1 and 11 will be produced to insure proper contact of the cutting edges throughout their lengths.
As shown particularly in Figure 1 the handle 19 can be coiled to form a finger receiving eye 23 and the end of the coil'can merge into an extension 24. Thus when the scissors are held properly the thumb will be seated in the eye 4 and one of the fingers will be seated in the coil of eye 23 while other fingers can press against the extension 24 so that increased leverage can be obtained.
By adjusting the screw 10, the adjacent edge of the portions 2 and 12 can be drawn toward each other so as to take up play between the members of the scissors.
While the notched portions have been shown integral with the members of the scissors it is to be understood that they can be made of separate pieces riveted or otherwise attached to the members. 7
The extension 24 not only affords increased leverage but, because of its lateral position relative to the plane of the cutting edges, it tends to press the cutting edges laterally against each other, thereby increasing the efficiency of the scissors.
Vhat is claimed is:
1..Scissors including pivotally connected bearing members each having a blade and a handle, there being a notch and a shoulder at one edge of each bearing member, means carried by each bearing member for insertion through the notch in the opposed bearing member when the blades are spread. apart, each of said means being movable to lap and slidably engage the opposed bearing member when the blades are moved toward each other, and a cam portion on one of the bearing members for engagement by one of said means to bind the cutting edges of the blades together during the closing of the scissors.
2. Scissors including opposed bearing members pivotally connected, a blade and a handle extending from each member, there being a notch and a shoulder at one edge of each bearing member, a yoke carried by one bearing member and insertible through one of the notches when the blades are opened,
a screw adjustably connected to the other bearing member and insertiblc through the other notch when the blades are opened, and means carried by the bearing members adapted to be lapped and frictionally engaged by the yoke and screw respectively when In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of my own, I have hereto afiiXed my signature.
